Download or read book Arabic Dialectology written by Enam al- Wer and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the insight in the field of Arabic linguistics has for a long time remained unknown to linguists outside the field. Regrettably, Arabic data rarely feature in the formulation of theories and analytical tools in modern linguistics. This situation is unfavourable to both sides. The Arabist, once an outrider, has almost become a non-member of the mainstream linguistics community. Consequently, linguistics itself has been deprived of a wealth of data from one of the world's major languages. However, it is reassuring to witness advances being made to integrate into mainstream linguistics the visions and debates of specialists in Arabic. Building on this fruitful endeavour, this book presents thought-provoking, new articles, especially written for this collection by leading scholars from both sides. The authors discuss topics in historical, social and spatial dialectology focusing on Arabic data investigated within modern analytical frameworks.
Download or read book The Kajkavian Dialect of Hidegs g and Fert homok written by H. Peter Houtzagers and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 1999 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Houtzagers, for whom no credentials are cited, offers a synchronic description of a Croatian immigrant dialect spoken in and around the Austrian-Hungarian border region, specifically in the two villages of the title. The dialect is unique in being the only surviving Kajkavian dialect that was separated from its original surroundings as early as the 16th century, and there are indications that these original surroundings were located somewhat east of where Kajkavian dialects are spoken today. The study contributes to the understanding not only of Serbo-Croatian dialects, but also of how newcomers and natives impact each other's speech, and of how dialects die. There is no index. Download or read book Dialectology of the Montenegrin Language written by Adnan Cirgic and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-12-10 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Montenegrin dialects have long been treated as part of the Serbian or Serbo-Croatian language in traditionalist dialectology. Even though they are among the best studied dialects of Slavic languages, this is the first monograph offering a synthesis of Montenegrin dialects. In Dialectology of the Montenegrin Language, Adnan Čirgić addresses them as a compact unit, mostly corresponding to Montenegrin state borders, with isoglosses that cross those borders—much like the behavior of dialects in general. Čirgić brings a different approach to classifying Montenegrin dialects, free from the ideological shackles imposed by unitarian language policy in the former Yugoslav federation, which included Montenegro as one of its constituent members. In addition to classifying Montenegrin dialects and summarizing features of individual dialects and speech groups, this book also presents a comprehensive history of research on those dialects since the nineteenth century, along with an exhaustive dialectological bibliography of Montenegro.
