Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Philosophical Treatise on the Nature and Constitution of Man, Vol. 2 Of the three several departments into which the consideration of the nature and constitution of man is divided in the present work, that which relates to his moral being is necessarily on many accounts the most complex, and the most perplexing. The subjects requiring to be embraced in connexion with it, are not only very diversified as regards their extent, but very abstruse in their quality; and the mutual bearing and dependence of each branch of the constitution of man upon the other, demand to be ascertained, and very precisely adjusted, ere any correct decision upon the matter can be arrived at. Hence arises the extraordinary abstruseness and obscurity in which most topics of an ethical nature appear to be frequently so inextricably involved. It is, moreover, with disquisitions upon them, as it is with arithmetical calculations, that the most trivial error in any one of the items renders the whole sum wrong throughout; although, on the other hand, arithmetical exercises are, happily, wholly exempt from all those perversions arising from the bias of the feelings, to which ethical controversies are so peculiarly subject; and which, as I shall endeavour to illustrate when I come to treat on the process of reasoning, is what mainly occasions topics of this nature so liable to be erroneously determined. Law and ethics, whose object and province it is to reduce all other subjects to order and certainty; as respects the conclusions attempted to be effected regarding themselves, but too often prove uncertain and unsatisfactory. Hence, those appliances which we regard as, and which ever ought to be, the surest safeguards against confusion and error, are, on the contrary, frequently found to be among their main promoters. Such an undertaking has of course demanded considerable pains in the execution, as well as extensive research and patient inquiry in securing the information necessary to render it in any degree perfect; requiring not only close and reiterated observation of human nature, but also a fall acquaintance with the thoughts and theories of those enlightened and penetrating minds which have already laboured earnestly in the same field. If therefore the subject of this Treatise be deemed too exalted for any but the loftiest genius to attempt; - and through the wide range of topics which the mind embraces, it is impossible to name any at once more vast, more abstruse, or more important; - the author has at any rate endeavoured to make some atonement for his apparent presumption in entering upon it, by devoting to it not merely the occasional leisure of a few years, but the attention and study of the best period of his life. It was commenced during early youth, carried on through manhood, and only completed in his later days. All those literary works of man, like the living works of God, which grow up before our eyes, and are intended to endure, are produced by slow degrees, and by a gradual putting forth of shoots. The mushroom, on the other hand, which springs up in a night, fades in a day. It is, moreover, ordinarily, with literary performances as with animal life, that their existence extends to n period corresponding with that occupied in their growth. Book excerpt: During 1874-1876, George Harris solicited comments and suggestions from many eminent philosophers, theologians and naturalists concerning the ideas and language of his planned treatise on the nature of man. This collection includes approximately 150 original manuscript letters sent him in reply by 31 correspondents, bound into one quarto volume. In 1876 Harris' work was published in two volumes titled "A Philosophical Treatise on the Nature and Constitution of Man"; in it he quoted from over 100 of these letters. The collection consists of 152 holograph letters, according to the numbering which has been added at some time. This numbering is somewhat erratic, however; an early cataloging record specifies "158 pieces". The letters have been folded and are bound into a handsome octavo-sized volume, preceded by a publisher's advertisement for the two-volume edition of "A Philosophical Treatise on the Nature and Constitution of Man," by George Harris. London: George Bell and Sons, 1876. The 18 pages of printed introductory matter consist of: Contents; Extracts; Opinions of the Press. A short paragraph after "Contents" states "Eminent authorities ... have been in correspondence with, and have been consulted by the author ... ". This statement is followed by 24 names listed as " ... among the gentlemen who have so kindly aided the undertaking." Following the printed introductory pages is a two-page handwritten list headed "Letters from", giving the correspondent's name and the letter number or numbers coming from that person. All letters are dated 1873 through 1877 (most from 1874-1875). Letter no.1, from Charles Darwin, was probably missing from the volume at the time it was bound.
