Book Freedom and Liberty Classic Reprint

Download or read book Freedom and Liberty Classic Reprint written by William Benett and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Freedom and Liberty In July 1916 I published an essay under the title of 'Freedom'. Its aim was purely ethical; that is, to show that, for the purposes of human evolution, each of the two opposites, law, or organic control, and liberty, or life, was of equal importance: that there can be no continued growth of the race as a whole without an equal growth of each of these conflicting principles. Beyond this conclusion I was unable to go. I recognized that as a system my philosophy was incomplete. It failed to provide the single final end without which the deduction of ethical values is impossible. But, at the time, I had little hope of carrying the inquiry further, and I published the results, as far as they went, in a cheap form, to preserve them from oblivion. In my previous writings I had indicated that the universal final end of ethics must be found in religion, and there only. Book Jonathan Edwards s Turn from the Classic Reformed Tradition of Freedom of the Will

Download or read book Jonathan Edwards s Turn from the Classic Reformed Tradition of Freedom of the Will written by Philip John Fisk and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2016-07-11 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philip J. Fisk offers a critical reappraisal of Jonathan Edwards's Freedom of Will, interpreting Edwards from within his own tradition, Reformed Orthodoxy (±1550-1750), avoiding the outdated paradigms of the conventional interpretation of Edwards and his tradition, a so-called deterministic, reconciliationist Calvinism, and demonstrating from primary sources, such as Harvard and Yale commencement theses and quaestiones, that Edwards departed ways with Reformed Orthodoxy's robust and highly nuanced view of freedom of will, contingency, and necessity.

Book Free Man s Companion

Download or read book Free Man s Companion written by Abel Brewster and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Free Man's Companion: A New and Original Work, Consisting of Numerous Moral, Political and Philosophical Views, Examples and Explanations, Tending to Illustrate the General Cause of Truth, Justice, Virtue, Liberty, and Human Improvement IN od'ering this volume to the public, it is unnecessary to say much in the preface. The work mainly answers for itself. The matter has been the production of an arduous and sincere devotion to the general cause of truth and human happiness. Whatever errors may have occurred, in the selection of subjects, in the arrangement of matter, or in the reasoning indulged on the same, only requires pointing out, by fair and manly explanation and argument, to be acknowledged and corrected in a future edi tions But what has been said in truth and reason, it is hoped may be duly appreciated and regarded. Perhaps the language, in some instances, may be considered 'too strong to suit weal: or diseased palates but if this should prove the' case, it will be observed, that it was not the design of this undertaking, to nurse the vices or follies of mankind - but to enlighten the ignorant to caution the unwary to strengthen and confirm the virtuous; and to detect and defeat error.
