Book A Phenomenological Study of Teachers Implementing Restorative Practices

Download or read book A Phenomenological Study of Teachers Implementing Restorative Practices written by Janiese Pauline McKenzie and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this phenomenological study is to explore and understand the perceptions of teachers as they endure change while implementing restorative practices at the secondary level. The central research question guiding this study asked, “How do secondary level teachers from central North Carolina describe their experiences with restorative practices in the classroom?” I interviewed and discussed the lived experiences of 11 participants, all teachers who have been trained in restorative practices by the International Institute of Restorative Practices and implemented in their classroom for one year in central North Carolina. The theory guiding this study was Michael Fullan’s change theory and the exploration of how and why a school reform initiative works. Data was collected in three ways: semi-structured, long interviews; a focus group; and a document review of the International Institute of Restorative Practices training materials. Data were analyzed using coding, clustering of codes, and theme extraction. After a comprehensive analysis of the data, three themes emerged: (a) the influence of student discourse on the culture of the classroom; (b) teacher empowerment through reflection; and (c) the emergence of altruism.

Book Restoring Effectively

Download or read book Restoring Effectively written by Ryan J. Higgins and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the effects of restorative discipline on teacher morale and retention at high-poverty, public, secondary schools. Restorative discipline is a new and increasingly popular approach to student behavior management that emphasizes positive relationships, repairing harm, and proactively promoting positive behavior. The effects of restorative practices for students have been increasingly explored, and largely positive results for students have been demonstrated, however the impact of this approach on teachers remain widely unknown. Three overarching research questions guided this phenomenological study: 1. How do teachers in high-poverty, public, secondary schools describe the impact that the shift towards restorative discipline practices has had on their willingness to remain in the teaching profession? 2. How do teachers in high-poverty, public, secondary schools describe the extent to which school-wide restorative discipline implemented strategies have impacted their teaching and classroom management practices? 3. How have the climate and culture at high-poverty, public, secondary public schools that implement restorative discipline influenced overall teacher retention? Data was collected from six transcribed semi-structured interviews, documents provided by participants, and publicly available content from participants' schools. Four main themes were established as a result of the data analysis process and are as follows: 1) "It's Changed A Lot," 2) "That Process Requires A Lot More," 3) "I've Seen That Teachers Are Getting Frustrated," and 4) "It Compounds, It Adds To The Stress". The findings of this study help shed light on how school systems and administrators may effectively implement restorative discipline practices in a way that positively affects teachers. Furthermore, the study adds to the body of literature surrounding restorative discipline and provides insight regarding when, where, and how certain restorative practices can be most effectively used. The pragmatic and social constructivist conceptual framework that informed this study addresses the widespread shift to restorative practices in recent years, the causes and effects of teacher turnover, and the impact of restorative practices on various stakeholders.

Book Perspectives of Elementary Teachers Counselors and Administrators on Restorative Practices in Elementary Schools

Download or read book Perspectives of Elementary Teachers Counselors and Administrators on Restorative Practices in Elementary Schools written by Aundrea Denise (Burton) Smiley Smiley and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to describe the implementation experiences and practices of restorative justice in education whose goal is to improve social-emotional skills, as well as reduce suspension rates among students, for K-5 elementary teachers, counselors and administrators at one elementary school in Virginia. This study examined the phenomena of restorative justice practices in schools and experiences of those involved. The theory guiding this study was Bandura’s social learning theory. The central research question to be addressed was: What are the experiences of teachers, counselors and administrators with restorative justice practices in elementary school as it relates to improving social-emotional learning in order to reduce misbehavior and suspension rates in Virginia? The school site was an elementary school in an equally split between urban and rural area in Virginia. The school involved in the study serves students in grades PK-5. The participants included 11 teachers, a counselor and an administrator that have used restorative practices in their school and classroom, as well as those who have actively participated in the implementation of restorative practices in their educational settings. These participants were selected through snowball samplings. After collecting data that included a demographic survey, interviews, document analysis as well as focus groups and analyzing the data using the seven steps from Moustakas (1994), each individual interview and the in-person focus group were transcribed using the Temi transcription application and entered in to MaxQDA. Statements, ideas, words, and phrases that appeared regularly were highlighted and categorized into individual groups and themes. The four themes that emerged from data were relationships, school culture, buy in, and student support.

Book The Lived Experiences of Teachers in a Restorative Practice Program at a Minnesota Suburban Middle School

Download or read book The Lived Experiences of Teachers in a Restorative Practice Program at a Minnesota Suburban Middle School written by Jamell D. Tidwell and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This transcendental phenomenology research study examined the lived experiences of 10 teachers who participated in a restorative practice program at a Minnesota suburban middle school. The research included structured scripted interviews with four male and six female middle school teachers. A thematic analysis was conducted to draw out the essence of the phenomenon; four major themes emerged from the analysis: 1. Restorative practice has a direct impact on the school community and all stakeholders involved, 2. Restorative practices are successful when most of the teachers in the building are actively supporting and engaging in the restorative process, 3. Democratic practices allow all voices to be heard while influencing the culture and climate of the school community, and 4. Restorative practices do not always solve the issues at hand. The findings of the study suggested that if restorative practices are implemented with fidelity they will have a lasting impact on the school community. The results of this research study confirmed the findings of preceding research studies that implementation of restorative practices can have an impact on the school community as a whole. The results of this phenomenological research study can be added to the literature on the implementation of restorative practices in an educational environment.

Book Managing Student Misbehavior Through a Restorative Approach

Download or read book Managing Student Misbehavior Through a Restorative Approach written by Michael Preston Christie and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative, transcendental phenomenological study was to understand the perceptions of alternative education teachers in utilizing a restorative approach to managing student behaviors at a small, rural school district in north Florida. Gordon’s (1981) theory on Teacher Effectiveness Training (TET) steered this study in investigating the research questions central to this study: (1) What are the experiences of alternative education teachers in using a restorative approach for addressing student behaviors? (2) How have these experiences shaped the teacher-student relationship? (3) What are the professional development needs of alternative education teachers to improve the restorative practices experience? Through purposive sampling, 10 to 12 participants were selected from an alternative school within north Florida. These participants were selected through convenience due to their role as the only instructional personnel at this site. Data collection was conducted in various ways, including focus groups, interviews, and classroom observations. Subsequent data analysis revealed three themes from this study. These themes are relationships, negative interactions, and understanding.

Book excerpt: "So many reformers talk about fundamental changes in schooling without understanding what such deep changes entail for children, teachers, and administrators. Seymour Sarason does. In his provocative, mind-bending and passionate style, Sarason again argues against short-term repairs of schools. He seeks long-term prevention and he sees the lever, as John Goodlad did, in the preparation of teachers. Add this to your small library of wisdom about school reform." --Larry Cuban, professor of education, Stanford University

Book A Phenomenological Study of Teacher Experiences with Implementation of Crisis Prevention and Intervention in Military connected Schools

Download or read book A Phenomenological Study of Teacher Experiences with Implementation of Crisis Prevention and Intervention in Military connected Schools written by Rebecca Young Carmichael and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this transcendental, phenomenological study was to describe the lived experiences of educators with classroom-based crises at military-connected schools and the crisis prevention and intervention training they have received. Knowles’ theory on adult education guided this study as it provides a useful framework for evaluating the provision and implementation of effective staff training. This qualitative study followed a phenomenological research design and involved 10 special education and general education teachers from military-connected schools. Sources of data included interviews, letters to new teachers, and a focus group. Data gathered was analyzed using the procedures of phenomenological reduction, imaginative variation, and the creation of textural and structural descriptions as viewed through the lens of adult learning theory. Epoche was used to suspend judgment and provide a measure of neutrality in the review of data. Additionally, literature was identified and discussed as it relates to crisis prevention and intervention in the classroom. Three overall themes were identified from the results of the study: de-escalation, prevention, and support. Within each theme, coding activities identified participant’s strong feelings regarding de-escalation best practices, the importance of calm, training issues, support for students of deployed service members and the need for support from administration and parents.

Book Latinization of U S Schools

Download or read book Latinization of U S Schools written by Jason Irizarry and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-03 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fueled largely by significant increases in the Latino population, the racial, ethnic, and linguistic texture of the United States is changing rapidly. Nowhere is this 'Latinisation' of America more evident than in schools. The dramatic population growth among Latinos in the United States has not been accompanied by gains in academic achievement. Estimates suggest that approximately half of Latino students fail to complete high school, and few enroll in and complete college. The Latinization of U.S. Schools centres on the voices of Latino youth. It examines how the students themselves make meaning of the policies and practices within schools. The student voices expose an inequitable opportunity structure that results in depressed academic performance for many Latino youth. Each chapter concludes with empirically based recommendations for educators seeking to improve their practice with Latino youth, stemming from a multiyear participatory action research project conducted by Irizarry and the student contributors to the text.

Book Creating Restorative Justice

Download or read book Creating Restorative Justice written by Gregory D. Paul and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-04-07 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discussion of the histories, meanings, and assumptions of restorative justice have enriched the development of its theory, research, and practices. While some of this work has addressed the role of communication, the treatment of communication within restorative justice remains rather under-developed. Communication plays a central role in processes of restoration and justice and a constitutive role in making restorative justice what it is. In Creating Restorative Justice: A Communication Perspective of Justice, Restoration, and Community, Gregory D. PaulandIan M. Borton argue that by centering communication in restorative justice as it occurs in various contexts (from families, to schools, to communities), we can simultaneously deepen our understanding, enrich our practice, and amplify our study of restoration and justice. From a communication perspective, restorative contexts both use and are created by the communication present. Any outcomes from restorative processes are thus the product of the communication both within and between restorative practices’ participants. As the world addresses the challenges presented by injustice, inequality, and insecurity, it is incumbent we expand our understanding of restorative processes to account for the vital role of communication.

Download or read book The Experience of Teachers Implementing Problem cased Learning in an English Language Arts Class in Hawaii written by Lavinia Sonia Mikaela Callahan and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to understand teachers’ experiences of implementing problem-based learning (PBL) at Leeward School. The theory guiding this study is Knowles’s self-directed learning (SDL) theory; it explored skills related to SDL. A transcendental phenomenological research approach was to understand how teachers implement PBL experiences, the phenomenon studied. A purposeful sampling method was used to select participants. The central research question was: What are the experiences of teachers implementing PBL in an English language arts classroom in a private school in Hawaii? The setting is Leeward School in Hawaii. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, follow-up interviews, and a focus group discussion. Data collected from the semi-structured interviews, follow-up interviews, and a focus group discussion created descriptions, apply codes, and develop themes. Data analysis was done by using open coding, embedded analysis and looking for themes. The themes found were self-efficacy, resources and supportiveness.

Book Disrupting the School to Prison Pipeline

Download or read book Disrupting the School to Prison Pipeline written by Sofía Bahena and published by Harvard Education Press. This book was released on 2012-12-01 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A trenchant and wide-ranging look at this alarming national trend, Disrupting the School-to-Prison Pipeline is unsparing in its account of the problem while pointing in the direction of meaningful and much-needed reforms. The “school-to-prison pipeline” has received much attention in the education world over the past few years. A fast-growing and disturbing development, it describes a range of circumstances whereby “children are funneled out of public schools and into the juvenile and criminal justice systems.” Scholars, educators, parents, students, and organizers across the country have pointed to this shocking trend, insisting that it be identified and understood—and that it be addressed as an urgent matter by the larger community. This new volume from the Harvard Educational Review features essays from scholars, educators, students, and community activists who are working to disrupt, reverse, and redirect the pipeline. Alongside these authors are contributions from the people most affected: youth and adults who have been incarcerated, or whose lives have been shaped by the school-to-prison pipeline. Through stories, essays, and poems, these individuals add to the book’s comprehensive portrait of how our education and justice systems function—and how they fail to serve the interests of many young people."
