Book Descent of Women

    Book Details:

  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 330 pages

Download or read book Descent of Women written by Frederick Sontag and published by Paragon House Publishers. This book was released on 1997 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an examination of the roles of men and women and the rise of the feminist movement by a senior professor of philosophy, using Darwin's Descent of Man as a starting point. Descent is a challenge to excesses of the revolutionary zeal of some writers of the feminist movement. In the course of illustrating the thesis that feminist thinking has yet to mature, particularly if it is to reach balance, self-criticism, and fairness to men, the author introduces the secondary thesis that the feminist movement should stop blaming all men for a long suffering history of women. Men have suffered, too, as the human animal emerged from a moral swamp in which sexual selection has played an important role. The author sees the feminist movement as a contribution to our expanding self-consciousness as a species and, in his criticism of radical feminism, seeks a richer future not a return to an oppressive past.

Book Spirituality for Our Global Community

Download or read book Spirituality for Our Global Community written by Daniel A. Helminiak and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2008-02-08 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking book, Daniel Helminiak provides a crucial spiritual option D a middle path between modern society's secular materialism and traditional religion's other-worldly focus and institutional dogmatism. The functional atheism of our contemporary consumer and scientific society (as championed by current best selling authors Sam Harris' The End of Faith, Richard Dawkins' The God Delusion, and Christopher Hitchens' God is Not Great) doesn't satisfy our desire for lasting meaning and value. But the parochial, inflexible character of traditional religious beliefs increasingly result in personal, local, and global conflicts in our current world of pluralism, globalization, respect for science and progress. Helminiak gives us a compelling vision of a global spirituality that downplays beliefs and emphasizes the essential spiritual dynamics of the common human quest for wholeness, goodness, freedom and community. Spirituality for a Global Community builds on the spiritual facet of our common humanity, stressing wholesome living on planet Earth, and opening onto the range of religions and belief in God.

Book A Forum for Peace

Download or read book A Forum for Peace written by Olivier Urbain and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-02 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every year since 1983 the Buddhist leader and thinker, Daisaku Ikeda, has issued a peace proposal that presents solutions to a variety of global problems. While the proposals themselves are both wide-ranging and specific (covering topics as diverse as counter-terrorism relations; the prohibition of child soldiers; denuclearization of the Arctic; and strategies to prevent global warming), the common denominator at their center is the role and effectiveness of the United Nations in addressing structural challenges and inequality. This substantial volume brings together, for the first time in one place, excerpts from the most topical and important of Ikeda's peace proposals. Themes like human security, the empowerment of women, nuclear disarmament and the centrality of dialogue are throughout informed by an unshakeable belief in the potential and promise of the UN's world mission, as well as by Ikeda's own experience of the cruelty of war and his articulation of Buddhism as a practical route to peace. The book makes a timely and vital contribution to ethics, peace studies and international relations.

Book China s Emergency Management

Download or read book China s Emergency Management written by Xing Tong and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-20 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this timely book about the current state of research and practice of emergency management in China, the authors take as their basic premises that we now live in a risk society and that our collective ability to deal with disasters and their aftermath is more important than ever. Set within a multi-disciplinary framework that places risk, disaster and crisis, the three phases of emergency management, on an analytical continuum, and drawing on empirical data obtained through surveys, observations, and interviews, the study not only provides a thorough overview of recent progress in our theoretical understanding of the subject but also offers insights on how scientifically informed policies can improve the way emergency management is done in China.

Leading theologians, ethicists, economists, and church leaders here examine the Christian call to live morally, faithfully, and responsibly in today's global marketplace and offer alternative perspectives to such utilitarians as Peter Singer. Book excerpt: The 2020 edition marks the 20th Anniversary of The Global Community Yearbook of International Law and Jurisprudence. The Yearbook has established itself as an authoritative source of reference on global legal issues and international jurisprudence. It includes analysis of the most significant global trends in a way that allows readers to monitor the development of the global legal order from several perspectives. The Yearbook publishes annually in a volume of carefully chosen primary source material and corresponding expert commentary. The General Editor, Professor Giuliana Ziccardi Capaldo, employs her vast expertise in international law to select excerpts from important court opinions and to choose experts from around the world to contribute essay-guides, which illuminate those cases. Although the main focus is recent case law from the major international tribunals and regional courts, the first four parts of each year's edition features expert articles by renowned scholars who address broader themes in current and future developments in international law and global policy, themes that appear throughout the case law of the many courts covered by the series as a whole. The Global Community Yearbook has thus become not just an indispensable window to recent jurisprudence: the series now also serves to prepare researchers for the issues facing emerging global law. This anniversary edition updates readers on the important work of long-standing international tribunals and introduces readers to more novel topics in international law. The journal's founding editor, Professor Emeritus Giuliana Ziccardi Capaldo, in her Editorial gives a presentation of the Yearbook's intellectual trajectory, as developed from its original roots, showing intriguing prospects for a publication that aims at the very forefront of events in law, politics, ethics, and jurisprudence in a global community. The Yearbook continues to provide expert coverage of the Court of Justice of the European Union and diverse tribunals from the International Court of Justice (ICJ), human rights courts (ECtHR, IACtHR, ACtHPR), criminal tribunals such as the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (MICT), to economically based tribunals such as ICSID and the WTO dispute settlement system. This edition contains original research articles on the development and analysis of the concept of global law and the views of the leading global law theorists on the subject of globalization. This 20th anniversary edition also includes a special section which provides an interdisciplinary overview of China's Belt and Road Initiative; and an examination of the global public health order in a post-COVID-19 world. The Yearbook provides students, scholars, and practitioners alike a valuable combination of expert discussion and direct quotes from the court opinions to which that discussion relates, as well as an annual overview of the process of cross-fertilization between international courts and tribunals.

Book Governance in World Affairs

Download or read book Governance in World Affairs written by Oran R. Young and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-31 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book Oran Young extends and generalizes his earlier work on international environmental regimes to present a comprehensive account of the current status and future prospects of regime theory as a way of thinking about governance in world affairs.Young organizes his assessment around two overarching issues. The first emphasizes the idea that regimes are dynamic systems. An understanding of regime formation is thus a springboard for inquiries into the effectiveness of these arrangements once they become operational and into the processes through which regimes change over time. The second stresses the importance of fostering a dialogue between scholars who espouse distinct ways of thinking about international institutions: the collective-action perspective arising from the fields of economics and public choice and the social-practice perspective associated with the fields of sociology and anthropology.Within this framework, the book offers cutting-edge contributions regarding the tasks institutions perform, the effectiveness of regimes, institutional change, and linkages among distinct regimes.
