Download or read book Understanding Complex Military Operations written by Karen Guttieri and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-03-21 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides materials for active learning about peacebuilding and conflict management in the context of complex stability operations. Today, America faces security challenges unlike any it has faced before, many of which requiring lengthy U.S. involvement in stability operations. These challenges are exceedingly dynamic and complex because of the ever changing mix and number of actors involved, the pace with which the strategic and operational environments change, and the constraints placed on response options. This volume presents a series of case studies to inspire active learning about peacebuilding and conflict management in the context of complex stability operations. The case studies highlight dilemmas pertaining to the story of the case (case dilemma) and to its larger policy implications (policy dilemma). The cases stimulate readers to "get inside the heads" of case protagonists with widely differing cultural backgrounds, professional experiences, and individual and organisational interests. Overall, Understanding Complex Military Operations challenges the reader to recognize the importance of specific national security related issues and their inherent dilemmas, deduce policy implications, and discern lessons that might apply to other – perhaps even non-security related – areas of public policy, administration, and management. This volume will be of much interest to students of conflict prevention, transitional justice, peacebuilding, security studies and professionals conducting field-based operations in potentially hazardous environments.

Download or read book The First Paper Girl in Red Oak Iowa written by Elizabeth Stuckey-French and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the stories in her first collection, Elizabeth Stuckey-French establishes herself as a smart new voice in American fiction and stakes her claim to a territory somewhere on the edge of stability, where normal is not just boring but nearly impossible, and where standing out in a crowd may just cause isolation. Her characters, mostly Midwesterners, are bizarre but endearing. A reform school graduate is placed in the care of her psychic aunt and in the servitude of a lucrative dog retrieval scheme. A mother who has accepted her son’s modest employment selling blue jeans bemoans the above-board lifestyle she discovers him leading as a wanted criminal. A rehab counselor lives vicariously through her already pregnant stepdaughter’s love affair with a drunk who spends his days in recovery and his nights in the bar. Full of wry wit, tender sympathy, and heartland attitude, The First Paper Girl in Red Oak, Iowa is as strange, funny, and poignant as the real world it resembles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I currently reside in Lathrop, Ca with my wife and children. I was born in New Orleans, LA July 20, 1966 to Lena Mae Griffin and Harris Elmore. I am the seventh of eight children whom are as different as night and day. We moved to Oakland, CA when i was about 5 yrs old. Most of my life was spent in Oakland and Berkeley where I was considered exceptional and gifted. I was later introduce to Mrs. Jenkins, a high school teacher, who thought it best to challenge me by asking me to write a poem for Black History month. Later that turned into editing the school newspaper whereas I was the journalist, photographer, sportswriter, and any other position needed to produce the paper. She also put on a play, Raisin in the Sun in which I enjoyed due to the fact I was a very sheltered person and it allowed others to see another side of me. Throughout the years I have entered poetry contest and passed around my writings on the street, and now I feel the need to share my thoughts and ideas with everyone else. Hope you enjoy and appreciate what I have to offer. God bless and be safe.
