Download or read book Unlikely Heroes written by Jennifer S. Holland and published by Workman Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her heartwarming New York Times bestsellers Unlikely Friendships and last year’s Unlikely Loves, Jennifer Holland revealed the surprising emotional bonds that exist between animals of different species. Her books spent dozens of weeks on bestseller lists and caught the attention of major media from CBS This Morning to USA Today. Why? Because she opened our eyes to the rich inner lives of animals, showing us that the power of love and friendship is not for humans only. In Unlikely Heroes, Ms. Holland uncovers and celebrates yet another side of animals that we often think belongs primarily to people—heroism, that indefinable quality of going above and beyond, often for altruistic reasons, often at great personal risk. These 37 inspiring true tales show animals whose quick acts have saved lives, like the pod of dolphins who protected swimmers in New Zealand from a great white shark by forming a screen around them. There are stories of animals who simply and unselfishly give, like Rojo the llama, who shines his very special light of lovingkindness on the elderly patients in an Oregon rehab center. And there are compelling stories of heroic resilience: like Naki’o, the abandoned puppy who lost all four paws to frostbite but found the grit not only to overcome that terrible hardship but to reclaim the joy of life—that’s him, smiling on the cover of the book.
Download or read book The Sky Rained Heroes written by Frederick E. LaCroix and published by BookPros, LLC. This book was released on 2009 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I asked for action, and I'm really getting it. We had our toughest mission to-date, yesterday. It was a bombing-strafing job on destroyers, and they really threw up the fireworks. It gives you a funny feeling to see all the ack-ack coming and still have to keep on going in. It is a feeling of acute anticipation and mild curiosity-the latter as regards whether it is your turn to get hit. I like combat pretty well. I guess it is a natural desire to like destruction. If you've ever seen six streams of tracers hosing into a target, I think you'd know what I mean. I've flown an awful lot lately (9 hours a day), and hope I can keep it up. However, some replacements came in today, so they will probably ease up a little on the rest of us. I'd rather keep up the steady flying, though. P. S. Guess you've been praying for me quite a bit. At any rate, someone has. Keep it up. There really are no atheists here. Book jacket.

Download or read book The Blood of Heroes written by James Donovan and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2012-05-15 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On February 23, 1836, a large Mexican army led by dictator Santa Anna reached San Antonio and laid siege to about 175 Texas rebels holed up in the Alamo. The Texans refused to surrender for nearly two weeks until almost 2,000 Mexican troops unleashed a final assault. The defenders fought valiantly-for their lives and for a free and independent Texas-but in the end, they were all slaughtered. Their ultimate sacrifice inspired the rallying cry "Remember the Alamo!" and eventual triumph. Exhaustively researched, and drawing upon fresh primary sources in U.S. and Mexican archives, The Blood of Heros is the definitive account of this epic battle. Populated by larger-than-life characters -- including Davy Crockett, James Bowie, William Barret Travis -- this is a stirring story of audacity, valor, and redemption.
