Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IF YOU WERE BORN IN A HOSPITAL IN the United States, chances are that you met a pediatrician for the first time the day you were born. Most babies are examined by a pediatrician within the first 24 hours after birth for the purpose of predicting long-term health. That visit is just one of many to come - children are cared for by pediatricians from birth until young adulthood. The profession of pediatrician can be one of the most rewarding careers in medicine, both financially and patient wise. The average pediatrician earns around $175,000 a year. Those with subspecialty certification can earn twice that. In addition to enjoying a comfortable living, most pediatricians choose this career path because they love working with children. They get to help children every day. Unlike some medical professionals, most of their time is spent in actual direct contact with kids, diagnosing, treating, examining, and preventing diseases and injuries specific to young patients. It is not always easy. The work requires an extra level of patience and understanding to deal with children who may be too young to describe how and why it hurts, as well as their parents who may be frightened and under stress. The road to becoming a pediatrician is a long one. After four years of college and four years of medical school, there is still another three years to go before a new doctor can practice pediatrics. This final three years of training, known as a residency, is when the doctor learns through hands-on experience how to handle specifically those medical conditions related to infants and children. Only after completing a residency, is a doctor eligible to become certified and start practicing as a pediatrician. Once the medical license is obtained, the fun part of becoming a pediatrician begins. New doctors can choose whether they want to practice in a small office setting, or in a hospital or with a large group, or even open their own private practice. Learning how to become a pediatrician is the first step in the process. To find out more about a career in this rewarding growing field, read on.

Book Understanding and Cultivating Well being for the Pediatrician

Download or read book Understanding and Cultivating Well being for the Pediatrician written by Sarah Webber and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-11-30 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With growing attention surrounding the importance of physician well-being, organizations are institutionalizing physician well-being efforts. Promoting well-being requires a understanding of the components, barriers and promoters of physician well-being, While other books exist in this space, many are focused on individual resilience-building strategies or are too broad to apply to specific groups of physicians, such as pediatricians. A critical gap in the existing literature is a book that uses an evidence-based model of well-being and applying this model to unique experience of pediatricians. Rather than a work-centric approach, the physician well-being model we describe in this book takes a comprehensive approach to well-being, integrating evidence and expertise from a broad body of well-being research and translating this knowledge to the lives and work of pediatricians. Further, while other texts focus on negative consequences of a lack of well-being, such as burnout, this text is organized around defining, understanding and optimizing well-being. Each chapter will provide strategies for both individual pediatricians and healthcare organizations to consider to improve pediatrician well-being at their institution. This book integrates well-being science from disciplines outside of medicine, offering innovative strategies to addressing this important issue. This is a book designed for pediatricians, health care leaders, and organizations looking to better understand and implement strategies for pediatrician well-being. The authors will take readers on a journey through the history of physician well-being leading to the current state of well-being in the context of modern medical practice, technology, society, policy and family life. Using an integrated model of physician well-being, readers will learn about the current state, solutions, tensions and future directions of physician well-being.
