The touch, technique, power, individuality, interpretation and intellectuality of each have been carefully noted; yet one point has been left untouched, and that one of the most important, viz.: the pedal - the life giving power to the pianist, that which vitalizes a composition as the sunlight vitalizes dormant colors, or the breath the human body. Download or read book School of the Piano Pedal written by William Smythe Babcock Mathews and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-20 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School of the Piano Pedal: Containing Explanations of the Best Usage, and Fully Illustrated by Numerous Selections From the Works of Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Franz, Heller, Liszt, Schumann, Tchaikovsky, and Many Original Studies The Pedals of the Pianoforte are a vital part of the tone-controlling mechanism, since they add to the tonal effect elements which cannot be put there from the keyboard. To pedal well requires long practice, close hearing, and constant and many-sided attention. To pedal a piece well is more difficult than to write out a really artistic fingering for an individual hand. The pedals are the more indispensable because, since Chopin, composers do not generally write the notes in all instances as they are meant to sound, but as the hands have to play them. The remainder is left to the uncertain indication of an occasional here and there in the music. Artistic pedaling, there fore, is not only a question of making the playing sound better, but often of bringing out an idea which but for the pedal would not be heard at all. Pedaling is an art requiring as careful and as systematic study as scale-work, arpeggios, or any element of the technic. Fine playing is impossible without the pedals. Pedal technic requires to be taken up very early in the course, during Grade II at latest. During this grade all the manners of using pedals explained in Chapters III, VII, VIII, IX, and X have to be carefully mastered, including the theoretical explanations appertaining to them. The pupil is to learn all of the pieces of this grade. During Grade III he begins again and reviews all the matter and the easy music in all the chapters, including Chapter XI. In Grade IV he again reviews all the theory and the pieces and adds those of Grade IV. In Grade V, the same. Thus at the end of the book he will have completely covered the usual pedal uses at least three times, and should begin to have a degree of taste and discretion in this direction, too often wanting. Every piece studied must be thoroughly memorized and by reviewing kept in memory. In Chapters VII, VIII, and IX the pedal is begun with the first study. In Chapters X and XI the notes are first learned. Every lesson is intended to sound like a piano recital even when the pieces are easy. It is not a ques tion of How much? Or How many? But How? Using classical music as a basis for learning, this method introduces interesting, varied and well-known pieces right from the outset. The two method books have been carefully designed to progress in small manageable steps, beginning with simple fingering patterns and exercises, onto some of the most beautiful melodies and pieces from the baroque, classical and romantic eras, such as the Ode to Joy, Für Elise and the Blue Danube Waltz. Leading the student through a range of exercises, repertoire pieces, theory checks, tips on practicing, playing and technique, and composer biographies, the process of learning is made interesting, informed and fun. The four supplementary volumes present further material to help learning at each stage of the students' development, as well as offering up a wider range of beautiful pieces, for the solo pianist, or piano duet.

Book The Technique and Art of Organ Playing Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Technique and Art of Organ Playing Classic Reprint written by Clarence Dickinson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Technique and Art of Organ Playing This book is designed to provide the teacher with the technical material necessary to carry the student from the beginning of his studies through to the acquirement of complete command of his instrument. The aim has been to include in one volume a study of all the distinctive principles of organ technique, with enough illustrations and exercises through which they may be mastered, together with interesting compositions which will at once call for their application. It is hoped that the textual division, Part I, may prove of value in saving the teacher's time by supplying a book of reference for students and also by providing material from which themes may be drawn for class conferences in which these points may be discussed and enlarged upon. In assembling in one volume studies of all the various points of organ technique necessary to the equipment of the organist with as detailed a description as possible of the process by which each is to be mastered, the author has had in mind, also, the many students who must pursue their work without the personal guidance of a teacher. To the studio of every teacher there come pupils who are able to remain only a short time, who then, although eager for further study, are obliged to return to their posts to do the best they can for their further advancement in their art, and to teach others out of their still limited equipment. Of course nothing can ever take the place of the personal guidance and example of an inspired teacher; this book simply aims to provide the next best thing for students who must continue their studies thus or not at all. With their needs in view the author has endeavored, in Part I, to take up each point of technique in logical and related order, and to describe it clearly and definitely, with illustrations whenever they may aid in comprehension and application; and, in Part II, to supply, also in logical order, just as many exercises as are absolutely necessary to cover each point, and pieces which, although they demand the application of each point of technique as it is acquired and are therefore excellent studies, are never mere studies, but are such as will be of use to the organist always, and of so great variety in style that effective recital programs can be made from just these numbers.
