Book excerpt: In the shadow of a looming world war, A Peal of Socialism unfolds in the bustling streets of 1930s London, a city at the heart of an empire on the brink of upheaval. This compelling historical fiction novel weaves the intricate lives of five young souls, each drawn to the capital by dreams of change and the rumblings of a new social order. As the spectre of conflict draws closer, these individuals – bound by their convictions and entangled in a web of love, loyalty, and betrayal – find themselves questioning the very essence of the war that encroaches upon their lives. Amidst the clamour for republicanism, the fervent debates of socialism, and the harsh realities of trade unionism, they are thrust into a world where their principles are tested against the backdrop of personal tragedy and collective hope. Brigid, a spirited young woman from west Cork, arrives in London with a heart full of aspirations and a resolve as steadfast as the land she leaves behind. Her journey intertwines with Billy, a dreamer caught between the echoes of his past and the tumultuous path that lies ahead. Together with their companions, they navigate the complexities of love, the pain of betrayal, and the relentless pursuit of their ideals.

Book excerpt: Grass-Roots Socialism answers two of the most intriguing questions in the history of American radicalism: why was the Socialist party stronger in Oklahoma than in any other state, and how was the party able to build powerful organizations in nearby rural southwestern areas? Many of the same grievances that had created a strong Populist movement in the region provided the Socialists with potent political issues—the railroad monopoly, the crop lien system, and political corruption. With these widely felt grievances to build on, the Socialists led the class-conscious farmers and workers to a radicalism that was far in advance of that advocated by the earlier People’s party. Examined in this broadly based study of the movement are popular leaders like Oklahoma’s Oscar Ameringer (“The Mark Twain of American Socialism”), “Red Tom” Hickey of Texas, and Kate Richards O’Hare, who was second only to Eugene Debs as a Socialist orator. Included also is information on the party’s propaganda techniques, especially those used in the lively newspapers which claimed fifty thousand subscribers in the Southwest by 1913, and on the attractive summer camp meetings which drew thousands of poor white tenant farmers to week-long agitation and education sessions.

Book AN UNSOCIAL SOCIALIST A Humorous Take on the Socialism of Victorian England

Download or read book AN UNSOCIAL SOCIALIST A Humorous Take on the Socialism of Victorian England written by George Bernard Shaw and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An Unsocial Socialist," Shaw's last written novel was published in 1887, having been written in 1883. The tale begins with a humorous description of student antics at a girl's school then changes focus to a seemingly uncouth labourer who, it soon develops, is really a wealthy gentleman in hiding from his overly affectionate wife. Tinged with self-satirical overtones this novel shows both the positive and negative aspects of Socialism in a comically paradoxical manner. Excerpt: "I am expected to be something more than mortal. Everyone else is encouraged to complain, and to be weak and silly. But I must have no feeling. I must be always in the right. Everyone else may be homesick, or huffed, or in low spirits. I must have no nerves, and must keep others laughing all day long." George Bernard Shaw (1856 – 1950) was an Irish playwright, essayist, novelist and short story writer and wrote more than 60 plays. He is the only person to have been awarded both a Nobel Prize in Literature (1925) and an Academy Award (1938).
