Book A Passionate Mind in Relentless Pursuit

Download or read book A Passionate Mind in Relentless Pursuit written by Noliwe Rooks and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2024-07-23 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An intimate and searching account of the life and legacy of one of America’s towering educators, a woman who dared to center the progress of Black women and girls in the larger struggle for political and social liberation When Mary McLeod Bethune died, tributes in newspapers around the country said the same thing: she should be on the Mount Rushmore of Black American achievement. Indeed, Bethune is the only Black American whose statue stands in Statuary Hall in the US Capitol, and yet for most, she remains a marble figure from the dim past. Now, seventy years later, Noliwe Rooks turns Bethune from stone to flesh, showing her to have been a visionary leader with lessons to still teach us as we continue on our journey toward a freer and more just nation. Any serious effort to understand how the Black civil rights generation found role models, vision, and inspiration during their midcentury struggle for political power must place Bethune at its heart. Her success was unlikely: the fifteenth of seventeen children and the first born into freedom, Bethune survived brutal poverty and caste subordination to become the first in her family to learn how to read and to attend college. She gave that same gift to others when in 1904, at age twenty-nine, Bethune welcomed her first class of five girls to the Daytona, Florida, school she had founded and which would become the university that bears her name to this day. Bethune saw education as an essential dimension of the larger struggle for freedom, vitally connected to the vote and to economic self-sufficiency, and she enlisted Eleanor Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and many other powerful leaders in her cause. Rooks grew up in Florida, in Bethune’s shadow: her grandmother trained to be a teacher at Bethune-Cookman University, and her family vacationed at the all-Black beach that Bethune helped found in one of her many community empowerment projects. The story of how Bethune succeeded in a state with some of the highest lynching rates in the country is, in Rooks’s hands, a moving and astonishing example of the power of a mind and a vision that had few equals. Now, when the stakes of the long struggle for full Black equality in this country are particularly evident—and centered on the state of Florida—it is a gift to have this brilliant and lyrical reckoning with Bethune’s journey from one of our own great educators and scholars of that same struggle.

Download or read book The Passion Paradox written by Brad Stulberg and published by Rodale Books. This book was released on 2019-03-19 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The coauthors of the bestselling Peak Performance dive into the fascinating science behind passion, showing how it can lead to a rich and meaningful life while also illuminating the ways in which it is a double-edged sword. Here’s how to cultivate a passion that will take you to great heights—while minimizing the risk of an equally great fall. Common advice is to find and follow your passion. A life of passion is a good life, or so we are told. But it's not that simple. Rarely is passion something that you just stumble upon, and the same drive that fuels breakthroughs—whether they're athletic, scientific, entrepreneurial, or artistic—can be every bit as destructive as it is productive. Yes, passion can be a wonderful gift, but only if you know how to channel it. If you're not careful, passion can become an awful curse, leading to endless seeking, suffering, and burnout. Brad Stulberg and Steve Magness once again team up, this time to demystify passion, showing readers how they can find and cultivate their passion, sustainably harness its power, and avoid its dangers. They ultimately argue that passion and balance--that other virtue touted by our culture--are incompatible, and that to find your passion, you must lose balance. And that's not always a bad thing. They show readers how to develop the right kind of passion, the kind that lets you achieve great things without ruining your life. Swift, compact, and powerful, this thought-provoking book combines captivating stories of extraordinarily passionate individuals with the latest science on the biological and psychological factors that give rise to—and every bit as important, sustain—passion.

The number one issue people seem to have with the concept of faith is that they think it is ineffective. The common phrase is, “Well I tried to believe, but it did not work.” By using biblically backed truths, this book goes into detail on what God says about pursing him and his promises, walking the reader through the process of when they first set their hearts to ask God for something until it finally shows in their life, while also addressing the possible hindrances that could be stopping them from seeing their answer. If you or someone you know is tired of seeing nothing come from praying or has completely abandoned the concept of God and faith, give this book a read. It will change your world and set a fire in your belly to be a relentless faith hound and pursue everything the Lord has for you.

  • Pages : 71 pages

Download or read book She and The World written by Smita D Talukdar and published by Smita D Talukdar. This book was released on 2023-09-10 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Smita D. Talukdar, the self-published author of the book Stop. No! pens this poetry collection. This book has two sections. It depicts the girl's evolution to a woman whose worries do not only include the discrimination women undergo at home or in society. But she is likewise able to see how indifferent people become to the woes in the lives of others or how hopelessly hopeful she is about a better future for herself or the world. Within the pages of this book, you will come across verses that explore the plight of women, their rights, and their struggles for freedom. Yet, this book ventures beyond the boundaries of gender-specific challenges. It beautifully captures the poet's understanding while perceiving how people become indifferent to the pain and suffering of others, as well as her hopefulness for a brighter future. The poems featured here delve into many themes, all intertwined in the intricate tapestry of the human experience. Loneliness, solitude, and the struggle to forge ahead in the face of doubt are explored, juxtaposed with narratives of love, self-love, and the power of kindness and empathy. But this collection does not shy away from the darker shades of humanity. Arrogance, envy, and ego are unflinchingly captured, allowing readers to reflect upon and confront the not-so-pleasant aspects of their nature. Through words that possess the persuasive quality of a good speaker, the poet compels us to examine our reluctance and the effects of our inability to move forward.
