Book Conjugate Gradient Algorithms and Finite Element Methods

Download or read book Conjugate Gradient Algorithms and Finite Element Methods written by Michal Krizek and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The position taken in this collection of pedagogically written essays is that conjugate gradient algorithms and finite element methods complement each other extremely well. Via their combinations practitioners have been able to solve complicated, direct and inverse, multidemensional problems modeled by ordinary or partial differential equations and inequalities, not necessarily linear, optimal control and optimal design being part of these problems. The aim of this book is to present both methods in the context of complicated problems modeled by linear and nonlinear partial differential equations, to provide an in-depth discussion on their implementation aspects. The authors show that conjugate gradient methods and finite element methods apply to the solution of real-life problems. They address graduate students as well as experts in scientific computing.

Book Programming the Finite Element Method

Download or read book Programming the Finite Element Method written by I. M. Smith and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2005-06-10 with total page 649 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title demonstrates how to develop computer programmes which solve specific engineering problems using the finite element method. It enables students, scientists and engineers to assemble their own computer programmes to produce numerical results to solve these problems. The first three editions of Programming the Finite Element Method established themselves as an authority in this area. This fully revised 4th edition includes completely rewritten programmes with a unique description and list of parallel versions of programmes in Fortran 90. The Fortran programmes and subroutines described in the text will be made available on the Internet via anonymous ftp, further adding to the value of this title.

Book Parallel Optimization for a Finite Element Problem from Nonlinear Elasticity

Download or read book Parallel Optimization for a Finite Element Problem from Nonlinear Elasticity written by Peter K. Jimack and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In particular the conjugate gradient algorithm is selected for implementation and it is shown to scale efficiently when multiple processors are used. Finally a novel variant of this method is considered in which, initially at least, more than one sequence of iterations is performed simultaneously -- each using a different starting point. This is shown to produce a significant speed-up in certain cases, regardless of whether accurate or inaccurate line searches are used in the conjugate gradient procedure."

Book Preconditioning and the Conjugate Gradient Method in the Context of Solving PDEs

Download or read book Preconditioning and the Conjugate Gradient Method in the Context of Solving PDEs written by Josef Malek and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2014-12-22 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preconditioning and the Conjugate Gradient Method in the Context of Solving PDEs?is about the interplay between modeling, analysis, discretization, matrix computation, and model reduction. The authors link PDE analysis, functional analysis, and calculus of variations with matrix iterative computation using Krylov subspace methods and address the challenges that arise during formulation of the mathematical model through to efficient numerical solution of the algebraic problem. The book?s central concept, preconditioning of the conjugate gradient method, is traditionally developed algebraically using the preconditioned finite-dimensional algebraic system. In this text, however, preconditioning is connected to the PDE analysis, and the infinite-dimensional formulation of the conjugate gradient method and its discretization and preconditioning are linked together. This text challenges commonly held views, addresses widespread misunderstandings, and formulates thought-provoking open questions for further research.?

Download or read book Parallel Algorithms for Matrix Computations written by K. Gallivan and published by SIAM. This book was released on 1990-01-01 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes a selection of important parallel algorithms for matrix computations. Reviews the current status and provides an overall perspective of parallel algorithms for solving problems arising in the major areas of numerical linear algebra, including (1) direct solution of dense, structured, or sparse linear systems, (2) dense or structured least squares computations, (3) dense or structured eigenvaluen and singular value computations, and (4) rapid elliptic solvers. The book emphasizes computational primitives whose efficient execution on parallel and vector computers is essential to obtain high performance algorithms. Consists of two comprehensive survey papers on important parallel algorithms for solving problems arising in the major areas of numerical linear algebra--direct solution of linear systems, least squares computations, eigenvalue and singular value computations, and rapid elliptic solvers, plus an extensive up-to-date bibliography (2,000 items) on related research.

Book Computational Mathematical Programming

Download or read book Computational Mathematical Programming written by Klaus Schittkowski and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the written versions of main lectures presented at the Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on Computational Mathematical Programming, which was held in Bad Windsheim, Germany F. R., from July 23 to August 2, 1984, under the sponsorship of NATO. The ASI was organized by the Committee on Algorithms (COAL) of the Mathematical Programming Society. Co-directors were Karla Hoffmann (National Bureau of Standards, Washington, U.S.A.) and Jan Teigen (Rabobank Nederland, Zeist, The Netherlands). Ninety participants coming from about 20 different countries attended the ASI and contributed their efforts to achieve a highly interesting and stimulating meeting. Since 1947 when the first linear programming technique was developed, the importance of optimization models and their mathematical solution methods has steadily increased, and now plays a leading role in applied research areas. The basic idea of optimization theory is to minimize (or maximize) a function of several variables subject to certain restrictions. This general mathematical concept covers a broad class of possible practical applications arising in mechanical, electrical, or chemical engineering, physics, economics, medicine, biology, etc. There are both industrial applications (e.g. design of mechanical structures, production plans) and applications in the natural, engineering, and social sciences (e.g. chemical equilibrium problems, christollography problems).
