Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Revolution The history of the Revolutionary War may be divided into four well-marked periods. The first period begins in 1761 with the resistance of James Otis to the general search-warrants, and it may be regarded as ending in June, 1774, when the acts for changing the government of Massachusetts were intended to take effect. This period of constitutional discussion culminated in the defiance of Great Britain by the people of Boston when they threw the tea into the harbour; and the acts of April, 1774, by which Parliament replied to the challenge, were virtually a declaration of war against the American colonies, though yet another year elapsed before the first bloodshed at Lexington. The second period opens with June, 1774, when Massachusetts began to nullify the acts of Parliament, and it closes with the Declaration of Independence. Book The True History of the American Revolution Classic Reprint

Download or read book The True History of the American Revolution Classic Reprint written by Sydney George Fisher and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The True History of the American Revolution The purpose of this history of the Revolution is to use the original authorities rather more frankly than has been the practice with our historians. They appear to have thought it advisable to omit from their narratives a great deal which, to me, seems essential to a true picture. I cannot feel satisfied with any description of the Revolution which treats the desire for independence as a sudden thought, and not a long growth and development, or which assumes that every detail of the conduct of the British government was absurdly stupid, even from its own point of view, and that the loyalists were few in numbers and their arguments not worth considering. I cannot see any advantage in not describing in their full meaning and force the smuggling, the buying of laws from the governors, and other irregular conduct in the colonies which led England to try to remodel them as soon as the fear of the French in Canada was removed. Nor can I accept a description which fails to reveal the salient details of the great controversy over the rather peculiar methods adopted by General Howe to suppress the rebellion. This controversy was a part of the Revolution. It involved the interesting question of Howe's instructions from the ministry and the methods which the ministry intended to use with the revolted colonists. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Domestic History of the American Revolution To guard against misapprehension, it is proper to say, that in this attempt to present in a new and interesting light the history of our struggle for national existence, there is nothing of fanciful embellishment. I hold in just aversion the to mancing trash under which, at the present day, the simple and picturesque - because simple - realities of our American story seem in danger of being buried. Not only has no aid of fiction been employed, but no traditional matter has been introduced, unless sustained by indisputable authority. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the American Revolution Tee discovery of the western hemisphere, effected by the bold and persevering genius of Christopher Columbus, in the year 1492, gave a new impulse to European activity; and the splendid conquests of the Spaniards in the West Indies, and in South America, excited the emulation of the other maritime powers of Christendom. Our ancestors were not dilatory in their endeavors to enter upon this new path to glory and wealth; for we find that, in the year 1498, John Cabot, by virtue of a commission from Henry VIL, took formal possession, in the name of that mon arch, of a considerable portion of the conti nent of North America. No attempt, however, was made to estab lish a colony in that country till the reign of Queen Elizabeth, when Sir Humphrey Gil bert and Sir Walter Raleigh, in the years 1578 and 1584, formed settlements there. Book History of the American Revolution

Download or read book History of the American Revolution written by Samuel Farmer Wilson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the American Revolution: With a Preliminary View of the Character and Principles of the Colonists, and Their Controversies With Great Britain The first intention of the writer of this book.was to prepare an abstract of some one of the larger histories of the American Revolution, in a more compact form than any which he had met with in his own reading. The object was to present a convenient volume, which should embrace all the principal occurrences, civil, military, and political, in America and Europe, having a direct'infiuence on the principles and progress of the revolutionary contest, at the same time that it should avoid all minor details not positively necessary to the continuity or integrity of the narrative. The military events were to be made less pro minent than is usual; and all circumstantial accounts of battles and manceuvres in the field, beyond leading incidents important for the understanding of the issue, were to be avoided. After examining several of the principal authorities, the design of following any particular author was abandoned, and the present plan adopted, of re-writing and re-arranging the whole, without regard to the order or language of previous histories. These are the claims of the work to originality. Its merits are submitted to the judgment of the public. The writer has diligently compared the received authorities, and exercised his judgment freely in selecting and arranging the essential facts; and he thinks he has brought within the compass of a volume convenient for popular use, a connected narrative of the revolution, em bracing all the principal events - foreign and domestic. Those portions which relate to the foreign negotiations, are more full in proportion, than the other divisions of the sub ject. They will be found, it is believed, correct and valuable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beverly Privateers in the American Revolution The harbor was for vessels of the size used in those days, a safe, convenient and fairly deep one. In the harbor between the Point and the site of the bridge now connecting Beverly and Salem lay the wharves, the first, counting from the ocean side, Union wharf, now Guffey's, next Bartlett's and Glover's, later occupied by Colonel Israel Thorndike. At the head of this wharf on Water Street was a large storehouse with an archway entrance from the street. Next Lovett's and Standley's wharf, then Stephen Nourse's wharf, later occupied by Nourse Stephens, next followed in order, Pickard and Woodbury's, J. H. Morgan's, Foster and Lovett's, Picket's, Ober's now Preston's, Deacon John Safford's, and Distillery wharf. There were also a few wharves in Bass River, used during the war for captured prizes. At the head of the wharves and along Water Street were the warehouses of the Beverly merchants, and along the shore from the Point toward the Cove were the fish akes where the salted cod were dried in the sun. Most of the merchants and im porters did a retail as well as wholesale business, selling to the fisher men, salt, nets, lines and clothing, and exchanging dress goods, rum, sugar, linen and our for fish, grain, lumber and country produce. Prior to the Revolutionary War Beverly was essentially a fishing village and all its commerce was based on this staple. In 1772 the fishing eet consisted of 30 vessels of the following ownership, tonnage and value. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
