Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief History of the Indian Peoples How Hinduism, while sufficing to organize the Indian communities into a social and religious confederacy, failed to knit them together into a coherent nation. Bengal was destined, by her position, to receive the human overflow from the ancient breeding-grounds of Central Asia. Waves of conquest from the north were as inevitable in early times, as are the tidal waves from the ocean at the present day. But such conquests, although rapid, were never enduring; and although wide-spread, were never complete. The religious and social organization of Hinduism never succumbed. The greatest of India's conquerors, the Mughals, were being crushed by Hindu confederacies before their supremacy had lasted 130 years. So far as can now be estimated, the advance of the British power alone saved the Delhi Empire from dismemberment by the Hindu Marhattas, Rajputs, and Sikhs. The British Rule has endured, because it is wielded in the joint interest of all the Indian races. But while these thoughts have long been present in my mind, I have tried not to obtrude them on my pages. For I hope that this little book will reach the hands of many young people who look on history merely as a record of facts, and not as a compendium of philosophy. The greatest service which an Indian historian can render at present to India, is to state the actual facts in such a way that they will be read. If my story is found to combine truth with simplicity, it will have attained all that I aimed at. If it teaches young Englishmen and young natives of India to think more kindly of each other, I shall esteem myself richly rewarded. Download or read book Ancient India written by R. C. Majumdar and published by Motilal Banarsidass. This book was released on 2016-01-01 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a comprehensive, intelligible and interesting portrait of Ancient Indian History and Civilization from a national historical point of view. The work is divided into three broad divisions of the natural course of cultural development in Ancient India: (1) From the prehistoric age to 600 B.C., (2) From 600 B.C. to 300 A.D., (3) From 300 A.D. to 1200 A.D. The work describes the political, economic, religious and cultural conditions of the country, the expansionist activities, the colonisation schemes of her rulers in the Far East. Political theories and administrative organizations are also discussed but more stress has been laid on the religious, literary and cultural aspects of Ancient India. The book is of a more advanced type. It would meet the needs not only of general readers but also of earnest students who require a thorough grasp of the essential facts and features before taking up specialized study in any branch of the subject. It would also fulfil the requirements of the candidates for competitive examinations in which Ancient Indian History and culture is a prescribed subject.

Book excerpt: Here, in more than 250 extraordinary photographs, is a showcase of the fabled days of the British Raj. India was at the vanguard of the explosion of photography and the early photographers, both Indian and foreign, mainly British, who strove to document and reveal the landscapes, peoples, cultures, and architecture of the subcontinent. India Through the Lens reveals the history and importance of photography in India, from the appeal of the panorama to the documentation of people, places, and princes. The early Indian photographer, Lala Deen Dayal for example, was unique in being embraced by both worlds- that of the British and the world of Indian Maharajahs. This book appeals to specialists and non-specialists alike- all those who love early photography, British India and the romance of the Raj.
