Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its first publication in 1952, Buddhist Dictionary has been a trusted companion and helper in the study of Buddhist literature. The author, Nyanatiloka Thera, was qualified as few others have ever been to serve as a reliable guide through the field of Theravada Buddhist terminology and doctrine. In this book he offers authentic and lucid explanations of Pali Buddhist terms, with cross-references in English and source references as well. Amidst the welter of modern works on Buddhism, and translations differing one from the other, this book will help in identifying the doctrinal terms and in correcting misleading renderings. Not a mere word dictionary but an aid to the terminology of Theravada Buddhism. Buddhist Dictionary will be as helpful to the serious lay student as to the professional scholar.

Book A Dictionary of Chinese Buddhist Terms

Download or read book A Dictionary of Chinese Buddhist Terms written by William Edward Soothill and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publ.. This book was released on 1977 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is an outstanding work for which two eminent scholars of Chinese Buddhism separated by 2000 miles of ocean collaborated for complete ten years during which the manuscript crossed the Atlantic four times. The authors aim has been to provide a key for the student with which to unlock a closed door and which does serve to reveal the riches of the great Buddhist thesaurus in China. In the absence of a dictionary of Chinese Buddhist Terms it was small wonder that the translation of Chinese texts has made little progress important thought these are to the understanding of Mahayana buddhism especially in its Far Eastern development.

Book excerpt: This highly important book translates and clearly explains foundational Pali terms that are vital to a complete understanding of Buddhist philosophy and religion. It is an accurate, detailed, and authentic Buddhist dictionary of doctrinal terms from the Pali Canon and its Commentaries. It is of value for understanding the early Buddhist tradition and the Theravada tradition which grew out of it, but does not cover the later Buddhist traditions. The author, Nyanatiloka, was a German monk who compiled the book while interned in India by the British during World War II. Since then, it has been enlarged and revised-this being the third revised and enlarged edition. The main entries are listed under the Pali terms, and the English expressions commonly used are explained and included. Original Pali words are often used in Buddhist texts and remain untranslated, since writers often did not know their accurate meanings. Therefore, this book is widely known as an essential work for all serious students of Buddhism.

Book A Dictionary of Chinese Buddhist Terms

Download or read book A Dictionary of Chinese Buddhist Terms written by Lewis Hodous and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-12-18 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This invaluable interpretive tool, first published in 1937, is now available for the first time in a paperback edition specially aimed at students of Chinese Buddhism. Those who have endeavoured to read Chinese texts apart from the apprehension of a Sanskrit background have generally made a fallacious interpretation, for the Buddhist canon is basically translation, or analogous to translation. In consequence, a large number of terms existing are employed approximately to connote imported ideas, as the various Chinese translators understood those ideas. Various translators invented different terms; and, even when the same term was finally adopted, its connotation varied, sometimes widely, from the Chinese term of phrase as normally used by the Chinese. For instance, klésa undoubtedly has a meaning in Sanskrit similar to that of, i.e. affliction, distress, trouble. In Buddhism affliction (or, as it may be understood from Chinese, the afflicters, distressers, troublers) means passions and illusions; and consequently fan-nao in Buddhist phraseology has acquired this technical connotation of the passions and illusions. Many terms of a similar character are noted in the body of this work. Consequent partly on this use of ordinary terms, even a well-educated Chinese without a knowledge of the technical equivalents finds himself unable to understand their implications.

Book The Princeton Dictionary of Buddhism

Download or read book The Princeton Dictionary of Buddhism written by Robert E. Buswell Jr. and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2013-11-24 with total page 1304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With more than 5,000 entries totaling over a million words, this is the most comprehensive and authoritative dictionary of Buddhism ever produced in English. It is also the first to cover terms from all of the canonical Buddhist languages and traditions: Sanskrit, Pali, Tibetan, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Unlike reference works that focus on a single Buddhist language or school, The Princeton Dictionary of Buddhism bridges the major Buddhist traditions to provide encyclopedic coverage of the most important terms, concepts, texts, authors, deities, schools, monasteries, and geographical sites from across the history of Buddhism. The main entries offer both a brief definition and a substantial short essay on the broader meaning and significance of the term covered. Extensive cross-references allow readers to find related terms and concepts. An appendix of Buddhist lists (for example, the four noble truths and the thirty-two marks of the Buddha), a timeline, six maps, and two diagrams are also included. Written and edited by two of today's most eminent scholars of Buddhism, and more than a decade in the making, this landmark work is an essential reference for every student, scholar, or practitioner of Buddhism and for anyone else interested in Asian religion, history, or philosophy. The most comprehensive dictionary of Buddhism ever produced in English More than 5,000 entries totaling over a million words The first dictionary to cover terms from all of the canonical Buddhist languages and traditions--Sanskrit, Pali, Tibetan, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean Detailed entries on the most important terms, concepts, texts, authors, deities, schools, monasteries, and geographical sites in the history of Buddhism Cross-references and appendixes that allow readers to find related terms and look up equivalent terms in multiple Buddhist languages Includes a list of Buddhist lists, a timeline, and maps Also contains selected terms and names in Thai, Burmese, Vietnamese, Lao, Khmer, Sinhalese, Newar, and Mongolian

Book A New Course in Reading Pali

Download or read book A New Course in Reading Pali written by James W. Gair and published by Motilal Banarsidass. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended and serve as an introduction to the reading of Pali texts. For that purpose, it uses authentic readings especially compiled for the purpose drawn largely from Theravada canonical works, both prose and poetry. The reading are in Roman script, and carefully graded for difficulty, but they have also been selected so that each of them is a meaningful and complete reading in itself, so as to introduce some basic concepts and ways of thought of Theravada Buddhism. This book thus offers and opportunity to become acquainted with the ways in which the teachings of the Buddha are embodied in the language, a sense that it impossible to determine from English translations. The book contains 12 lessons. Each of them has three parts: (1) a set of basic readings and an accompanying glossary, (2) grammatical notes on the forms in the less, and (3) a set of further readings with its own glossary. The further readings introduce no new grammatical points, but reinforce ones already presented and give further practice in them. The work concludes, fittingly, with the Buddhaês first sermon, The Dhammacakkapavattana Sutta. A cumulative glossary and index to the grammar is also provided. The text has been used successfully in its preliminary form at several universities, but it may also be used for self-study.

Book excerpt: Lord Buddha's teachings have a great importance today for the common people to live in peace and to maintain brotherhood in the society. The aim of the present work is to take different ideas and conceptions found in Pali writings and present them to the reader in English. The work also contains original Pali texts along with its translations. The book is divided into five chapters and more than one hundred sections. The selections of the first chapter are on the Buddha; next follow those which deal chiefly with the doctrine; while others concerning the Order and secular life constitute the closing chapter of the book. The uniqueness of the work lies in the selective presentation of the materials and their systematic organization. The book is accompanied by Introduction, Preface, Bibliography and general Index. Besides Appendices, an addition of Glossary of Buddhist technical terms is also a notable feature of this work. Hence, this new and enlarged edition would be immensely useful for the students as well as researchers of Pali and Buddhism. Besides, it will also serve a much larger purpose.
