Download or read book A Pale Shade of Blue written by Tommy Melis and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2014-02 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this revised edition of his poetry collection, A Pale Shade of Blue, Tommy Melis explores topics ranging from feminism and equality to religious oppression and existential freedom. For this revision, he has added new poems written between 2011 and 2012 and included previously unreleased poetry written between 1999 and 2008, representing his earliest work. Like most Cuban Americans, he grew up in a family that celebrated their rich cultural history as both Cuban exiles and first-generation Americans. The characters represented in his poems have overcome mental illness and found healing in identifying common societal themes between the blurred lines of justice and freedom. Having to find their way to the light, they speak out of the darkness they have seen, and their relentless emotional trappings they each seek to be free from. The stories are of perseverance and often speak of things normally swept under rugs. The poems in this collection are divided into five distinct books: "Book One: The Tree Growing" represents rebirth and belief; "Book Two: Stems" considers embracing and releasing the darkness; "Book Three: Branches" speaks to oppression and cultural moldings; "Book Four: Fire" covers lessons learned; and "Book Five: Roots" looks at the connection between the poet and his reader. A Pale Shade of Blue opens up the world of a vibrant culture and the emotions associated with overcoming personal challenges for all to consider.

Download or read book Pale Fire written by Vladimir Nabokov and published by ببلومانيا للنشر والتوزيع. This book was released on 2024-02-18 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American poet John Shade is dead. His last poem, 'Pale Fire', is put into a book, together with a preface, a lengthy commentary and notes by Shade's editor, Charles Kinbote. Known on campus as the 'Great Beaver', Kinbote is haughty, inquisitive, intolerant, but is he also mad, bad - and even dangerous? As his wildly eccentric annotations slide into the personal and the fantastical, Kinbote reveals perhaps more than he should be. Nabokov's darkly witty, richly inventive masterpiece is a suspenseful whodunit, a story of one-upmanship and dubious penmanship, and a glorious literary conundrum.

Download or read book Inside the Royal Wardrobe written by Kate Strasdin and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-10-05 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Queen Alexandra used clothes to fashion images of herself as a wife, a mother and a royal: a woman who both led Britain alongside her husband Edward VII and lived her life through fashion. Inside the Royal Wardrobe overturns the popular portrait of a vapid and neglected queen, examining the surviving garments of Alexandra, Princess of Wales – who later became Queen Consort – to unlock a rich tapestry of royal dress and society in the second half of the 19th century. More than 130 extraordinary garments from Alexandra's wardrobe survive, from sumptuous court dress and politicised fancy dress to mourning attire and elegant coronation gowns, and can be found in various collections around the world, from London, Oslo and Denmark to New York, Toronto and Tokyo. Curator and fashion scholar Kate Strasdin places these garments at the heart of this in-depth study, examining their relationships to issues such as body politics, power, celebrity, social identity and performance, and interpreting Alexandra's world from the objects out. Adopting an object-based methodology, the book features a range of original sources from letters, travel journals and newspaper editorials, to wardrobe accounts, memoirs, tailors' ledgers and business records. Revealing a shrewd and socially aware woman attuned to the popular power of royal dress, the work will appeal to students and scholars of costume, fashion and dress history, as well as of material culture and 19th century history.

Download or read book Wares of the Ming Dynasty written by R. L. Hobson and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 1998-05-15 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains and illustrates as many varieties of Ming ceramics as possible. The text is based primarily on information obtained from Chinese sources and the occasional notes made by Europeans who visited China in Ming times. To these, Mr. Hobson has added his own penetrating deductions, made after careful study of well-authenticated specimens and of observation by earlier scholars. His presentation is not only clear and precise but also incontestably authoritative and at the same time highly readable. The first twelve chapters of the book deal almost exclusively with the porcelain produced at Ching-te Chen; the next four, with the porcelain and pottery made at other centers. The bulk of the 129 pieces illustrated (12 in color) are drawn from private collections, but references is also made to important examples in museums. Of particular interest are Mr. Hobson's comments on collecting and on the identification of genuine Ming wares. A special chapter on marks, inscriptions, and Chinese characters is included, together with a selected bibliography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solomon Hooper, Angharad (Harry) Jones and Oli McConundrum have worked as teachers at The St Tiresias Academy for the past three years. Or so they thought. When they inadvertently discover their personal truths, they find themselves dragged into a life-or-death struggle that takes them on an epic journey. During their quest, they encounter a rather pungent 5th century Cornwall, a deep space amassing ship, a Pink Floyd gig in London in 1967, The Mary Celeste, an ancient intergalactic war, and a museum of incongruent things. They are forced to engage in battle with a foe who threatens to shatter the bonds that hold the very fabric of reality together. And as if this wasn't enough, they have to contend with an elderly gothic gentleman, tasked with the audit of molluscs, an over-confident robot, obsessed with administering foot rubs, a strawberry flavoured pussycat, a stroppy psychopath with his own personal army of dribbling monsters, and a bendy gymnast in a black fetish costume. Can they overcome these seemingly insurmountable odds, or will the universe dissolve into a subatomic, chaotic soup?
