She supposes Stephen to be a professional man from London, but finds he comes from more humble origins. Stephen must go away and make something of himself before he can claim her. Circumstances change in his absence, and Elfride must decide if she will keep her pledge to marry Stephen. A Pair of Blue Eyes is Thomas Hardy’s third novel, and the first one to bear his real name when it was first published. The novel was first published as a serial, and the “cliffhanger” is supposed to have been named after a scene in which a character is left hanging over the edge of a cliff—while readers are left waiting for the next chapter to be serialized. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book excerpt: The nature/nurture debate is not dead. Dichotomous views of development still underlie many fundamental debates in the biological and social sciences. Developmental systems theory (DST) offers a new conceptual framework with which to resolve such debates. DST views ontogeny as contingent cycles of interaction among a varied set of developmental resources, no one of which controls the process. These factors include DNA, cellular and organismic structure, and social and ecological interactions. DST has excited interest from a wide range of researchers, from molecular biologists to anthropologists, because of its ability to integrate evolutionary theory and other disciplines without falling into traditional oppositions. The book provides historical background to DST, recent theoretical findings on the mechanisms of heredity, applications of the DST framework to behavioral development, implications of DST for the philosophy of biology, and critical reactions to DST.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • From the acclaimed Nobel Prize winner—a powerful examination of our obsession with beauty and conformity that asks questions about race, class, and gender with characteristic subtly and grace. In Morrison’s acclaimed first novel, Pecola Breedlove—an 11-year-old Black girl in an America whose love for its blond, blue-eyed children can devastate all others—prays for her eyes to turn blue: so that she will be beautiful, so that people will look at her, so that her world will be different. This is the story of the nightmare at the heart of her yearning, and the tragedy of its fulfillment. Here, Morrison’s writing is “so precise, so faithful to speech and so charged with pain and wonder that the novel becomes poetry” (The New York Times).

Book Architecting User Centric Privacy as a Set of Services

Download or read book Architecting User Centric Privacy as a Set of Services written by Ghazi Ben Ayed and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How could privacy play a key role in protecting digital identities? How could we merge privacy law, policies, regulations and technologies to protect our digital identities in the context of connected devices and distributed systems? In this book, the author addresses major issues of identity protection and proposes a service-oriented layered framework to achieve interoperability of privacy and secure distributed systems. The framework is intended to distill privacy-related digital identity requirements (business interoperability) into a set of services, which in turn can be implemented on the basis of open standards (technical interoperability). The adoption of the proposed framework in security projects and initiatives would decrease complexities and foster understanding and collaborations between business and technical stakeholders. This work is a step toward implementing the author’s vision of delivering cyber security as a set of autonomous multi-platform hosted services that should be available upon user request and on a pay-per-use basis.
