Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Painter of Dreams, and Other Biographical Studies Certain material for A Dupe of Destiny has been supplied by a grandson of Madame Patterson Bonaparte; by a friend of her family (at the house of whose grandfather Jerome Bonaparte met his future bride, then Eliza beth Patterson, and whose relations were inti mately acquainted with her in later years, when a repudiated wife) from Dr Richard Caton of Liverpool, collateral descendant of Mrs Robert Patterson, nee Caton; and by Mrs Murray, nee Patterson, whose grandfather was a brother of William Patterson, the father of the above-mentioned Elizabeth, Madame Patterson Bonaparte. Much of the information in A Favourite of Destiny was given me by the aforesaid Dr Richard Caton, and by Mrs Brown Westhead, of Lea Castle, Worcestershire, collateral descendants of Richard Caton of Baltimore. The correspondence in A Painter of Realities was given me by my cousin, Philip Spencer Stan h0pe, great-nephew of Charles Spencer Stanhope, the early patron of Herring. The material for A Painter of Dreams, the life of my uncle Roddam Spencer Stanhope, has been furnished from papers in the possession of various members of my family. It will therefore be seen that, in each instance, the source whence my information has been de rived is unimpeachable, although at the same time one which was probably inaccessible to the general public. Book excerpt: While the reputation of Remedios Varo (1908-63) the surrealist painter is now well established, Remedios Varo the writer has yet to be fully discovered. Her writings, which were never published during her life let alone translated into English, present something of a missing chapter and offer the same qualities to be found in her visual work: an engagement with mysticism and magic, a breakdown of the border between the everyday and the marvelous, a love of mischief and an ongoing meditation on the need for (and the trauma of) escape in all its forms. This volume brings together the painter's collected writings and includes an unpublished interview, letters to friends and acquaintances (as well as to people unknown), dream accounts, notes for unrealized projects, a project for a theater piece, whimsical recipes for controlled dreaming, exercises in surrealist automatic writing and prose poem commentaries on her paintings. It also includes her longest manuscript, the pseudoscientific, De Homo Rodans, an absurdist study of the wheeled predecessor to Homo sapiens (the skeleton of which Varo had built out of chicken bones). Ostensibly written by the invented anthropologist Hälikcio von Fuhrängschmidt, Varo's text utilizes eccentric Latin and a tongue-in-cheek pompous discourse to explain the origins of the first umbrella and in what ways Myths are merely corrupted Myrtles.

It was like a wondrous wedding-feast, and all the figures were moving, an army of joyous youths and maidens, towards a golden throne. On the throne sat a woman whose golden robe owed, like a river seen at sunset, down towards the youths and maidens who were singing songs of praise, whilst they swung bloom-laden branches over their heads and cast white roses before the throne of Love. Behind this vision of youth came stern-faced warriors on snorting chargers, and pearl-crowned queens who led golden-haired children by the hand. Then came musicians who were followed by troops of beggars and the tattered forms of the poor, all hurrying, pressing, streaming towards that golden throne. But the woman on the throne had no face. The fairy fingers of the artist had stopped here, suddenly before the final accomplishment, which was to have crowned his whole masterpiece, Eric's brush had failed him. In his dreams he had seen the face he wanted, the eyes that haunted him but the moment he woke his vision paled, and no effort of will could call back the look of those eyes which he needed for the woman on the throne. SO Eric - the Eric whom every one loved, who had been the stern King's joy - had gone mad because of the desire for those eyes of his dream. The light began to fail in the great hall still King Wanda stood gazing at the figure on the throne which had no face. Great rage seized him because of his helplessness, and a great longing for the fair-haired youth who had been his joy and pride. Little Oona came up to where he stood, and slipped her cool hand into his, laying her curly head against his arm.
