More than 50% of residents in long-term care settings are affected by urinary incontinence and it is associated in many cases with markedly reduced quality of life. It has become evident that incontinence can be cured or successfully managed. However, many nurses lack sufficient knowledge to intervene appropriately. The purpose of this evidence-based quality improvement project was to determine if educating nurses leads to increased assessments of urinary incontinence in this population. Using the Iowa Model of Evidence-Based Practice Change, a 45-minute educational pilot program was implemented. Before program implementation, the Project Coordinator completed a pre-project chart audit. Post-project chart audit was completed on all newly admitted residents after six weeks. To evaluate the transfer of knowledge, the pre-project and post-project chart audit percentages were compared. The project demonstrated that educating long-term care nurses on urinary incontinence can lead to increased assessments." -- Abstract.
