Book Numerical Simulations of the Flowfield in Central Dump Ramjet Combustors 2 Effects of Inlet and Combustor Acoustics

Download or read book Numerical Simulations of the Flowfield in Central Dump Ramjet Combustors 2 Effects of Inlet and Combustor Acoustics written by K. Kailasanath and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A potentially important source of large pressure oscillations in compact ramjets is a combustion instability induced by the interaction of large-scale vortex structures with the acoustic modes of the ramjet. To study these interactions, we have performed time-dependent, compressible numerical simulations of the flow field in an idealized ramjet consisting of an axisymmetric inlet and a combustor. The simulations indicate strong coupling between the flow field and the acoustics of both the inlet and the combustor. For the cases studied, forcing at the first longitudinal acoustic mode of the combustor induces vortex-rollup near the entrance to the combustor at that frequency. A low frequency oscillation is also observed in all the simulations. Pressure and velocity fluctuations in the inlet indicate that the low frequency corresponds to a quarter-wave mode in the inlet. Changing the length of the inlet appropriately changes the observed low frequency. The merging pattern of the inlet is changed. These merging patterns are explained on the basis of an interaction between the vortex-rollup frequency and the acoustic modes of the inlet and combustor. Keywords: Ramjet, Combustion instability, Turbulence. (mjm).

Book Combustion Instabilities in Gas Turbine Engines

Download or read book Combustion Instabilities in Gas Turbine Engines written by Timothy C. Lieuwen and published by AIAA (American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics). This book was released on 2005 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers gas turbine users and manufacturers a valuable resource to help them sort through issues associated with combustion instabilities. In the last ten years, substantial efforts have been made in the industrial, governmental, and academic communities to understand the unique issues associated with combustion instabilities in low-emission gas turbines. The objective of this book is to compile these results into a series of chapters that address the various facets of the problem. The Case Studies section speaks to specific manufacturer and user experiences with combustion instabilities in the development stage and in fielded turbine engines. The book then goes on to examine The Fundamental Mechanisms, The Combustor Modeling, and Control Approaches.

Book Combustion Processes in Propulsion

Download or read book Combustion Processes in Propulsion written by Gabriel Roy and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2005-12-01 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical propulsion comprises the science and technology of using chemical reactions of any kind to create thrust and thereby propel a vehicle or object to a desired acceleration and speed. Cumbustion Processes in Propulsion focuses on recent advances in the design of very highly efficient, low-pollution-emitting propulsion systems, as well as advances in testing, diagnostics and analysis. It offers unique coverage of Pulse Detonation Engines, which add tremendous power to jet thrust by combining high pressure with ignition of the air/fuel mixture. Readers will learn about the advances in the reduction of jet noise and toxic fuel emissions—something that is being heavily regulated by relevant government agencies. Lead editor is one of the world's foremost combustion researchers, with contributions from some of the world's leading researchers in combustion engineering Covers all major areas of chemical propulsion-from combustion measurement, analysis and simulation, to advanced control of combustion processes, to noise and emission control Includes important information on advanced technologies for reducing jet engine noise and hazardous fuel combustion emissions

Book Dump Combustor Parametric Investigation

Download or read book Dump Combustor Parametric Investigation written by Frank D. Stull and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of scale model coaxial dump combustors from 2 inch to 5 inch D were tested on a thrust stand with JP-4 fuel over a wide range of ramjet test conditions. Baseline conditions were selected to approximate 'pressure scaling criteria' in which chamber pressure times combustor diameter remains constant. JP-4 fuel was injected perpendicular to the airstream from eight plane tube injectors. Fuel/air ratio, chamber pressure and nozzle throat diameter were varied for each size chamber. Lean blow-out limit, combustion efficiency, combustor pressure drop, and combustion instability characteristics were obtained for each test point.

Book Numerical Simulations of Flowfields in a Central Dump Ramjet Combustor 3 Effects of Chemistry

Download or read book Numerical Simulations of Flowfields in a Central Dump Ramjet Combustor 3 Effects of Chemistry written by Kazhikathra Kailasanath and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is the third in a series which presents the results of numerical simulations performed to isolate and study acoustic-vortex-chemical interactions in an idealized ramjet consisting of an axisymmetric inlet and combustor and a choked nozzle. Both reactive and nonreactive flows have been simulated. The nonreactive flow calculations show complex interactions among the natural instability frequency of the shear layer at the inlet-combustor junction and the acoustics of both the inlet and the combustor. The entire flow oscillates at a low frequency which corresponds to that of a quarter-mode in the inlet. For the reactive flow cases studied, energy release alters the flow field substantially. Energy release in a large vortex is in phase with the pressure oscillation over a substantial region of the combustor and results in the observed amplification of the low-frequency oscillations and leads to combustion instability. The large pressure oscillation also modifies the vortex shedding process. Keywords: Ramjet, Turbulence, Combustion instability. (jes).
