Book excerpt: Few scientists doubt the prediction that the antropogenic release of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will lead to some warming of the earth's climate. So there is good reason to investigate the possible effects of such a warming, in dependence of geographical and social economic setting. Many bodies, governmental or not, have organized meetings and issued reports in which the carbon dioxide problem is defined, reviewed, and possible threats assessed. The rate at which such reports are produced still increases. However, while more and more people are getting involved in the 'carbon dioxide business', the number of investigators working on the basic problems grows, in our view, too slowly. Many fundamental questions are still not answered in a satisfactory way, and the carbon dioxide building rests on a few thin pillars. One such fundamental question concerns the change in sea level associated with a climatic warming of a few degrees. A number of processes can be listed that could all lead to changes of the order of tens of centimeters (e. g. thermal expansion, change in mass balance of glaciers and ice sheets). But the picture of the carbon dioxide problem has frequently be made more dramatic by suggesting that the West Antarctic Ice Sheet is unstable, implying a certain probability of a 5 m higher sea-level stand within a few centuries.

Book excerpt: The OSU global coupled atmosphere/ocean general circulation model (A/O GCM) has been used to simulate the present (lxCO2) climate and to investigate a CO2-induced (2xCO2) climate change. Previous analysis of the lxCO2 simulation showed distinct errors in the simulated sea surface temperature (SST) and sea ice which were attributed primarily to the atmospheric GM (AGCM). Analysis of the 2xCO2 simulation showed that the CO2-induced warming penetrated into the ocean; this caused a delay in the equilibration of the climate system with an estimated e-folding time of 50-75 years. The present study has two objectives. The principal objective is to answer the question: By what pathways and through which physical processes does the simulated ocean general circulation produce the penetration of the CO2-induced warming into the ocean? The secondary objective is to evaluate the performance of the oceanic GCM (OGCM) in the lxCO2 simulation. The comparison of the simulated lxCO2 internal oceanic fields with the corresponding observations shows that although they are basically similar, there are distinct errors. Further analysis shows that these errors were generated by the OGCM during its spin-up integration prior to its coupling with the AGCM. This study thus shows that it is not sufficient to compare the simulated SST with the observed SST to evaluate the performance of the OGCM. It is also necessary to compare the simulated internal oceanic quantities with the corresponding observed quantities. The global mean analysis of the CO2-induced climate changes shows that the ocean gains heat at a rate of 3 W/m2 due to the CO2 doubling. This heat penetrates downward into the ocean predominantly through the reduction in the convective overturning. The zonal mean analysis shows that the surface warming increased from the tropics toward the mid-latitudes of both hemispheres and penetrated gradually to the deeper ocean. The oceanic warming penetrated to a greater depth in the subtropics and mid-latitudes than in the equatorial region. A zonal mean heat budget analysis shows that the CO2-induced warming of the ocean occurs predominantly through the downward transport of heat, with the meridional heat flux being only of secondary importance. In the tropics the penetration of the CO2-induced heating is minimized by the upwelling of cold water. In the subtropics the heating is transported downward more readily by the downwelling existing there. In the high latitudes the suppressed convection plays the dominant role in the downward penetration of the CO2-induced heating.

The oceanic circulation largely controls the temporal evolution of cli mate changes resulting from human activities such as the increase of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, and also affects the magnitude and regional distribution of those changes. On interannual and longer time scales the ocean is, through its interaction with the atmosphere, a source of important natural climate variations which we are only now beginning to recognise but whose cause has yet to be properly determined. Chem ical and biological processes in the ocean are linked to climate change, particularly through interaction with the global carbon cycle. A quantitative understanding of the oceanic role in the climate system requires models which include many complex processes and interactions, and which are systematically verified with observations. This is the ob jective of global research programs such as TOGA, WOCE, and JGOFS. Coupled numerical models of the oceanic and atmospheric circulation constitute the basis of every climate simulation. Increasingly it is recog nized that in addition a biological/chemical component is necessary to capture the pathways of carbon and other trace gases. The development of such coupled models is a challenging task which needs scientists who must be cognizant of several other disciplines beyond their own specialty.

Book excerpt: The transient response of both surface air temperature and deep ocean temperature to an increasing external forcing strongly depends on climate sensitivity and the rate of the heat mixing into the deep ocean, estimates for both of which have large uncertainty. In this paper a method for estimating rates of oceanic heat uptake for coupled atmosphere-ocean general circulation models from results of transient climate change simulations is described. For models considered in this study, the estimates vary by a factor of 2 1/2. Nevertheless, values of oceanic heat uptake for all models fall in the range implied by the climate record for the last century. It is worth noting that the range of the model values is narrower than that consistent with observations and thus does not provide a full measure of the uncertainty in the rate of oceanic heat uptake.

Book excerpt: The Geo-Sciences Panel is a synonym for the Special Programme on Global Transport Mechanisms in the Geo-Sciences. This Programme is one of the special programs established by the NATO Science Committee to promote the study of a specific topic using the usual NATO structures, namely, Advanced Research Workshops, Advanced Study Institutes, Conferences, Collaborative Research Grants, Research-Studies and Lecture Visits. The aim of the Programme is to stimulate and facilitate international col laboration among scientists of the member countries in selected areas of global transport mechanisms in the Earth's atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere and asthenosphere, and the interactions between these global transport processes. Created in 1982, the Geo-Sciences Panel followed the Air Sea Interactions Panel which was very successful in reviewing mechanisms at the air-sea-ice interface. Initially the Geo-Sciences Panel recognized the importance of magma chambers, ore deposits, geochemical cycles, seismic activity and hydrological studies. However, the Panel was rap idly convinced that the climate system is one of the most important sys tems in which to promote research on global transport mechanisms. Consequently, the Panel welcomed the organization of a course on Physically Based Modelling and Simulation of Climate and Climatic Change. This course was launched in Belgium in 1984 during both the Liege colloquium on Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere tlodels and the Louvain-Ia Neuve General Assembly of the European Geophysical Society. Rapidly scientists recognized that this course was timely and would be well received by the climate community, especially by junior researchers in this multi- and inter-disciplinary field.
