Book Numerical Methods for Eigenvalue Problems

Download or read book Numerical Methods for Eigenvalue Problems written by Steffen Börm and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-05-29 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eigenvalues and eigenvectors of matrices and linear operators play an important role when solving problems from structural mechanics and electrodynamics, e.g., by describing the resonance frequencies of systems, when investigating the long-term behavior of stochastic processes, e.g., by describing invariant probability measures, and as a tool for solving more general mathematical problems, e.g., by diagonalizing ordinary differential equations or systems from control theory. This textbook presents a number of the most important numerical methods for finding eigenvalues and eigenvectors of matrices. The authors discuss the central ideas underlying the different algorithms and introduce the theoretical concepts required to analyze their behavior with the goal to present an easily accessible introduction to the field, including rigorous proofs of all important results, but not a complete overview of the vast body of research. Several programming examples allow the reader to experience the behavior of the different algorithms first-hand. The book addresses students and lecturers of mathematics, physics and engineering who are interested in the fundamental ideas of modern numerical methods and want to learn how to apply and extend these ideas to solve new problems.

Book Numerical Continuation Methods

Download or read book Numerical Continuation Methods written by Eugene L. Allgower and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past fifteen years two new techniques have yielded extremely important contributions toward the numerical solution of nonlinear systems of equations. This book provides an introduction to and an up-to-date survey of numerical continuation methods (tracing of implicitly defined curves) of both predictor-corrector and piecewise-linear types. It presents and analyzes implementations aimed at applications to the computation of zero points, fixed points, nonlinear eigenvalue problems, bifurcation and turning points, and economic equilibria. Many algorithms are presented in a pseudo code format. An appendix supplies five sample FORTRAN programs with numerical examples, which readers can adapt to fit their purposes, and a description of the program package SCOUT for analyzing nonlinear problems via piecewise-linear methods. An extensive up-to-date bibliography spanning 46 pages is included. The material in this book has been presented to students of mathematics, engineering and sciences with great success, and will also serve as a valuable tool for researchers in the field.

Book Numerical Solutions of Boundary Value Problems for Ordinary Differential Equations

Download or read book Numerical Solutions of Boundary Value Problems for Ordinary Differential Equations written by A.K. Aziz and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerical Solutions of Boundary Value Problems for Ordinary Differential Equations covers the proceedings of the 1974 Symposium by the same title, held at the University of Maryland, Baltimore Country Campus. This symposium aims to bring together a number of numerical analysis involved in research in both theoretical and practical aspects of this field. This text is organized into three parts encompassing 15 chapters. Part I reviews the initial and boundary value problems. Part II explores a large number of important results of both theoretical and practical nature of the field, including discussions of the smooth and local interpolant with small K-th derivative, the occurrence and solution of boundary value reaction systems, the posteriori error estimates, and boundary problem solvers for first order systems based on deferred corrections. Part III highlights the practical applications of the boundary value problems, specifically a high-order finite-difference method for the solution of two-point boundary-value problems on a uniform mesh. This book will prove useful to mathematicians, engineers, and physicists.

Book Numerical Methods for Two Point Boundary Value Problems

Download or read book Numerical Methods for Two Point Boundary Value Problems written by Herbert B. Keller and published by Courier Dover Publications. This book was released on 2018-11-14 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elementary yet rigorous, this concise treatment explores practical numerical methods for solving very general two-point boundary-value problems. The approach is directed toward students with a knowledge of advanced calculus and basic numerical analysis as well as some background in ordinary differential equations and linear algebra. After an introductory chapter that covers some of the basic prerequisites, the text studies three techniques in detail: initial value or "shooting" methods, finite difference methods, and integral equations methods. Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problems are treated with all three techniques, and shooting is applied to generalized or nonlinear eigenvalue problems. Several other areas of numerical analysis are introduced throughout the study. The treatment concludes with more than 100 problems that augment and clarify the text, and several research papers appear in the Appendixes.
