Book Numerical Investigation of Flow Around Rectangular Cylinders with and Without Jets

Download or read book Numerical Investigation of Flow Around Rectangular Cylinders with and Without Jets written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-06-03 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of flow past bluff bodies was studied extensively in the past. The problem of drag reduction is very important in many high speed flow applications. Considerable work has been done in this subject area in case of circular cylinders. The present study attempts to investigate the feasibility of drag reduction on a rectangular cylinder by flow injection by flow injection from the rear stagnation region. The physical problem is modeled as two-dimensional body and numerical analysis is carried out with and without trailing jets. A commercial code is used for this purpose. Unsteady computation is performed in case of rectangular cylinders with no trailing jets where as steady state computation is performed when jet is introduced. It is found that drag can be reduced by introducing jets with small intensity in rear stagnation region of the rectangular cylinders.Tiwari, S. N . and Pidugu, S. Book A Numerical Investigation of Rectangular Cylinders with Interest in Maximizing Drag

This book was released on 2015 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this dissertation, rectangular cylinder flow is explored through a series of numerical simulations. First, rectangular cylinders at a Reynolds number of 20,000 are simulated using Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulations and detached eddy simulations (DES). 2-D and 3-D simulations are performed using a variety of turbulence models. It is found that unlike 2-D simulations, the 3-D simulations are found to be in agreement with the experimental data over the entire range of aspect ratios simulated. The results of the 2-D and 3-D simulations was found to be consistent with existing literature. Unfortunately, RANS simulations are not ideal for learning about the physics of the flow due to a different set of governing equations than nature. A switch to direct numerical simulations (DNS) is made and 3-D simulations of rectangular cylinders at Re = 500 are performed. For the aspect ratios considered at Re = 500, it is uncharted territory due to the lack of experimental data and simulation results. A significant change in drag coefficient vs. aspect ratio is found when compared to the higher Reynolds number case. This change is thought to be due to the lack of vortex roll-up in the free shear layer that only appears in the high Reynolds number case. In addition, there is a local increase in the drag coefficient that corresponds to the mean spanwise flow and free shear layer impingement. Last, we perform a series simulations where suction and blowing are applied to an aspect ratio 0.62 rectangular cylinder. Through this method, we attempt to increase its drag coefficient from its value at Re = 500 (2.24) to its value at Re = 20,000 (2.94). It is found that the drag coefficient does indeed increase, but not for the reasons originally expected.

Book Numerical Analysis of Flow Around Rectangular Cylinders with Various Side Ratios

Download or read book Numerical Analysis of Flow Around Rectangular Cylinders with Various Side Ratios written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three-dimensional numerical analysis of the flow around rectangular cylinders with various side ratios, D/H, from 0.2 to 2.0, was carried out for Reynolds number of 1000 by using a multi directional finite difference method on a regular-arranged multi grid. The predicted results are in good agreement with the experimental data. It is found that fluid dynamic characteristics of rectangular cylinders alternate between the high-pressure mode and the low-pressure mode of the base pressure for D/H=02-0.6. We show that this phenomenon is induced by the change of the flow pattern around rectangular cylinders.

Download or read book Lattice Boltzmann Modeling written by Michael C. Sukop and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-04-05 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a basic introduction to Lattice Boltzmann models that emphasizes intuition and simplistic conceptualization of processes, while avoiding the complex mathematics that underlies LB models. The model is viewed from a particle perspective where collisions, streaming, and particle-particle/particle-surface interactions constitute the entire conceptual framework. Beginners and those whose interest is in model application over detailed mathematics will find this a powerful 'quick start' guide. Example simulations, exercises, and computer codes are included.

This book was released on 2004-10-19 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lattice-gas cellular automata (LGCA) and lattice Boltzmann models (LBM) are relatively new and promising methods for the numerical solution of nonlinear partial differential equations. The book provides an introduction for graduate students and researchers. Working knowledge of calculus is required and experience in PDEs and fluid dynamics is recommended. Some peculiarities of cellular automata are outlined in Chapter 2. The properties of various LGCA and special coding techniques are discussed in Chapter 3. Concepts from statistical mechanics (Chapter 4) provide the necessary theoretical background for LGCA and LBM. The properties of lattice Boltzmann models and a method for their construction are presented in Chapter 5.

Book Lattice Boltzmann Method And Its Application In Engineering

Download or read book Lattice Boltzmann Method And Its Application In Engineering written by Zhaoli Guo and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2013-03-25 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) is a relatively new simulation technique for the modeling of complex fluid systems and has attracted interest from researchers in computational physics. Unlike the traditional CFD methods, which solve the conservation equations of macroscopic properties (i.e., mass, momentum, and energy) numerically, LBM models the fluid consisting of fictive particles, and such particles perform consecutive propagation and collision processes over a discrete lattice mesh. This book will cover the fundamental and practical application of LBM. The first part of the book consists of three chapters starting form the theory of LBM, basic models, initial and boundary conditions, theoretical analysis, to improved models. The second part of the book consists of six chapters, address applications of LBM in various aspects of computational fluid dynamic engineering, covering areas, such as thermo-hydrodynamics, compressible flows, multicomponent/multiphase flows, microscale flows, flows in porous media, turbulent flows, and suspensions. With these coverage LBM, the book intended to promote its applications, instead of the traditional computational fluid dynamic method.

Book Hydrodynamics Around Cylindrical Structures

Download or read book Hydrodynamics Around Cylindrical Structures written by Jorgen Fredsoe and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1997-03-17 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the subject of wave/current flow around a cylinder, the forces induced on the cylinder by the flow, and the vibration pattern of slender structures in a marine environment. The primary aim of the book is to describe the flow pattern and the resulting load which develops when waves or current meet a cylinder. Attention is paid to the special case of a circular cylinder. The development in the forces is related to the various flow patterns and is discussed in detail. Regular as well as irregular waves are considered, and special cases like wall proximities (pipelines) are also investigated. The book is intended for MSc students with some experience in basic fluid mechanics and for PhD students.
