Book excerpt: These proceedings contain copies of the papers presented at the Symposium on Gravity Gradient Attitude Stabilization held on 3 - 5 December 1968. The symposium was broken into seven sessions. Session I, the Role of Gravity Gradient Attitude Control for Future Spacecraft, is devoted to the subject of representative attitude control requirements for spacecraft missions in planning. Session II, Space Environment, contains two papers: the first is on the magnetic field and the second is on particle environment--at synchronous altitude. Session III, Theory, contains papers on the completeness of theory relating to the design and anticipated performance of gravity gradient systems. Session IV, Design and Operational Experience, presents operational and design experience for existing gravity gradient spacecraft. Session V, Hardware, concentrates on the characteristics, performance, and state of development of existing and projected principal elements of gravity gradient systems. Session VI, New Concepts, is devoted to descriptions of new gravity gradient techniques that will be useful for future satellites. Session VII, the Panel Discussion, contains an edited transcription of the panel discussion. (Author).

Book Space Tethers and Space Elevators

Download or read book Space Tethers and Space Elevators written by Michel van Pelt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-06-12 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michel van Pelt explains for the first time the principle of space tethers: what they are and how they can be used in space. He introduces non-technical space enthusiasts to the various possibilities and feasibility of space tethers including the technological challenges and potential benefits. He illustrates how, because of their inherent simplicity, space tethers have the potential to make space travel much cheaper, while ongoing advances in tether material technology may make even seemingly far-fetched ideas a reality in the not too distant future.

Book Rigid Body Dynamics for Space Applications

Download or read book Rigid Body Dynamics for Space Applications written by Vladimir Aslanov and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2017-04-22 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rigid Body Dynamics for Space Applications explores the modern problems of spaceflight mechanics, such as attitude dynamics of re-entry and space debris in Earth's atmosphere; dynamics and control of coaxial satellite gyrostats; deployment, dynamics, and control of a tether-assisted return mission of a re-entry capsule; and removal of large space debris by a tether tow. Most space systems can be considered as a system of rigid bodies, with additional elastic and viscoelastic elements and fuel residuals in some cases. This guide shows the nature of the phenomena and explains the behavior of space objects. Researchers working on spacecraft attitude dynamics or space debris removal as well as those in the fields of mechanics, aerospace engineering, and aerospace science will benefit from this book. Provides a complete treatise of modeling attitude for a range of novel and modern attitude control problems of spaceflight mechanics Features chapters on the application of rigid body dynamics to atmospheric re-entries, tethered assisted re-entry, and tethered space debris removal Shows relatively simple ways of constructing mathematical models and analytical solutions describing the behavior of very complex material systems Uses modern methods of regular and chaotic dynamics to obtain results

Book Tethered Space Robot

Download or read book Tethered Space Robot written by Panfeng Huang and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tethered Space Robot: Dynamics, Measurement, and Control discusses a novel tethered space robot (TSR) system that contains the space platform, flexible tether and gripper. TSR can capture and remove non-cooperative targets such as space debris. It is the first time the concept has been described in a book, which describes the system and mission design of TSR and then introduces the latest research on pose measurement, dynamics and control. The book covers the TSR system, from principle to applications, including a complete implementing scheme. A useful reference for researchers, engineers and students interested in space robots, OOS and debris removal. Provides for the first time comprehensive coverage of various aspects of tethered space robots (TSR) Presents both fundamental principles and application technologies including pose measurement, dynamics and control Describes some new control techniques, including a coordinated control method for tracking optimal trajectory, coordinated coupling control and coordinated approaching control using mobile tether attachment points

Book Orbital Mechanics for Engineering Students

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Orbital Mechanics for Engineering Students, Second Edition, provides an introduction to the basic concepts of space mechanics. These include vector kinematics in three dimensions; Newton’s laws of motion and gravitation; relative motion; the vector-based solution of the classical two-body problem; derivation of Kepler’s equations; orbits in three dimensions; preliminary orbit determination; and orbital maneuvers. The book also covers relative motion and the two-impulse rendezvous problem; interplanetary mission design using patched conics; rigid-body dynamics used to characterize the attitude of a space vehicle; satellite attitude dynamics; and the characteristics and design of multi-stage launch vehicles. Each chapter begins with an outline of key concepts and concludes with problems that are based on the material covered. This text is written for undergraduates who are studying orbital mechanics for the first time and have completed courses in physics, dynamics, and mathematics, including differential equations and applied linear algebra. Graduate students, researchers, and experienced practitioners will also find useful review materials in the book. NEW: Reorganized and improved discusions of coordinate systems, new discussion on perturbations and quarternions NEW: Increased coverage of attitude dynamics, including new Matlab algorithms and examples in chapter 10 New examples and homework problems
