Book Nuclear Diagnostic for Fast Alpha Particles

Download or read book Nuclear Diagnostic for Fast Alpha Particles written by and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurement of the velocity distribution of confined energetic alpha particles resulting from deuterium-tritium fusion reactions in a magnetically contained plasma is provided. The fusion plasma is seeded with energetic boron neutrals for producing, by means of the reaction .sup. 10 B (.alpha., n) .sup. 13 N reaction, radioactive nitrogen nuclei which are then collected by a probe. The radioactivity of the probe is then measured by conventional techniques in determining the energy distribution of the alpha particles in the plasma. In a preferred embodiment, diborane gas (B.sub. 2 H.sub. 6) is the source of the boron neutrals to produce .sup. 13 N which decays almost exclusively by positron emission with a convenient half-life of 10 minutes.

Book Method for Determining Fast alpha particle Confinement in Tokamak Plasmas Using Resonant Nuclear Reactors

Download or read book Method for Determining Fast alpha particle Confinement in Tokamak Plasmas Using Resonant Nuclear Reactors written by and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The resonant nuclear reactions D(.cap alpha., .gamma.)6Li, 6Li(.cap alpha., .gamma.)1°B, and 7Li(.cap alpha., .gamma.)11B are examined as diagnostics of fast-alpha-particle confinement in tokamak plasmas. Gamma rays from these resonant reactions with energies from 2.1 MeV to 9.2 MeV may be used to infer the alpha-particle population between energies of 0.4 MeV and 2.6 MeV. The ratio of these alpha-burnup reactions to the reactions T(D, .gamma.)5He and 3He(D, .gamma.)5Li provides a technique for the measurement of alpha confinement.

Book Alpha Particle Diagnostic

Download or read book Alpha Particle Diagnostic written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of burning plasmas is the next frontier in fusion energy research, and will be a major objective of the U.S. fusion program through U.S. collaboration with our international partners on the ITER Project. For DT magnetic fusion to be useful for energy production, it is essential that the energetic alpha particles produced by the fusion reactions be confined long enough to deposit a significant fraction of their initial ~3.5 MeV energy in the plasma before they are lost. Development of diagnostics to study the behavior of energetic confined alpha particles is a very important if not essential part of burning plasma research. Despite the clear need for these measurements, development of diagnostics to study confined the fast confined alphas to date has proven extremely difficult, and the available techniques remain for the most part unproven and with significant uncertainties. Research under this grant had the goal of developing diagnostics of fast confined alphas, primarily based on measurements of the neutron and ion tails resulting from alpha particle knock-on collisions with the plasma deuterium and tritium fuel ions. One of the strengths of this approach is the ability to measure the alphas in the hot plasma core where the interesting ignition physics will occur.

Book Diagnostics for Experimental Thermonuclear Fusion Reactors

Download or read book Diagnostics for Experimental Thermonuclear Fusion Reactors written by Giuseppe Gorini and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 631 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book of proceedings collects the papers presented at the Workshop on Diagnostics for ITER, held at Villa Monastero, Varenna (Italy), from August 28 to September 1, 1995. The Workshop was organised by the International School of Plasma Physics "Piero Caldirola. " Established in 1971, the ISPP has organised over fifty advanced courses and workshops on topics mainly related to plasma physics. In particular, courses and workshops on plasma diagnostics (previously held in 1975, 1978, 1982, 1986, and 1991) can be considered milestones in the history of this institution. Looking back at the proceedings of the previous meetings in Varenna, one can appreciate the rapid progress in the field of plasma diagnostics over the past 20 years. The 1995 workshop was co-organised by the Istituto di Fisica del Plasma of the National Research Council (CNR). In contrast to previous Varenna meetings on diagnostics, which have covered diagnostics in present-day tokamaks and which have had a substantial tutorial component, the 1995 workshop concentrated specifically on the problems and challenges of ITER diagnostics. ITER (the International Thennonuclear Experimental Reactor, a joint venture of Europe, Japan, Russia, and the United States, presently under design) will need to measure a wide range of plasma parameters in order to reach and sustain high levels of fusion power. A list of the measurement requirements together with the parameter ranges, target measurement resolutions, and accuracies provides the starting point for selecting a list of candidate diagnostic systems.

Book High Energy Alpha Particles Associated with Fission

Download or read book High Energy Alpha Particles Associated with Fission written by E. O. Wollan and published by . This book was released on 1947 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work the photographic emulsion technique has been applied to the study of the long range particles given off during neutron irradiation of uranium. Alvarez first observed these particles with an ion chamber and linear amplifier. Segre, et al (LA-87) studied these particles with an ion chamber which gave coincidences between these particles and fission. They found them to be coincident with fission within the time constant of their circuit (approx 5u sec). They were also able to identify these particles as alpha particles from the density of ionization near the end of the tracks. Hughes has observed a number of these alpha particles in the cloud chamber, but his setup did not permit him to observe the associated fission track. The cloud chamber or photographic emulsion technique permits information to be obtained about the alpha particles and their association with the fission process that cannot be got by the ion chamber method. The photographic emulsion technique has been used in this case because it lends itself very well to a study of rare events of this type.

Book Advancing Nuclear Medicine Through Innovation

Download or read book Advancing Nuclear Medicine Through Innovation written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-09-11 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly 20 million nuclear medicine procedures are carried out each year in the United States alone to diagnose and treat cancers, cardiovascular disease, and certain neurological disorders. Many of the advancements in nuclear medicine have been the result of research investments made during the past 50 years where these procedures are now a routine part of clinical care. Although nuclear medicine plays an important role in biomedical research and disease management, its promise is only beginning to be realized. Advancing Nuclear Medicine Through Innovation highlights the exciting emerging opportunities in nuclear medicine, which include assessing the efficacy of new drugs in development, individualizing treatment to the patient, and understanding the biology of human diseases. Health care and pharmaceutical professionals will be most interested in this book's examination of the challenges the field faces and its recommendations for ways to reduce these impediments.
