Book Science and Technology in the Industrial Revolution

Download or read book Science and Technology in the Industrial Revolution written by Albert Edward Musson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 1989 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concentrating on the Industrial Revolution as experienced in Great Britain (and, within that sphere, mainly on the early development of the engineering and chemical industries), the authors develop the thesis that the interaction between theorists and men of practical affairs was much closer, more complex and more consequential than some historians of science have held it to be. Deeply researched, gracefully argued and fully documented. First published in 1969, and established now as a "classic" in the field, the present edition has a new foreword by Margaret C. Jacob. Book Making an Industrial Revolution

Download or read book Making an Industrial Revolution written by Gillian Cookson and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2025-01-14 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new look at Britain's industrial revolution showing how communities of shared skill, knowledge and experience drove industrial innovation. Making an Industrial Revolution presents a fresh perspective on British industrialization. Advances in technology, commerce and science played their part, but - as this book argues - above all it was communities of shared skill, knowledge and experience which drove industrial innovation in the eighteenth century. Connections and relationships in key sectors - iron, textiles and engineering - produced transformative forces that revolutionized industrial life in Britain. Including new insights into Scotland's unique contribution, the book explores industrial change across the country, highlighting the significance of inter-regional and overseas migration and connection. It considers how social status enabled or limited individuals. It questions how exactly eighteenth-century science linked with emerging industrial technologies; and the importance of science, relative to skills and experience, in shaping innovation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Cavendishes flourished during the high tide of British aristocracy following the revolution of 1688-89, and the case can be made that this aristocracy knew its finest hour when Henry Cavendish gently laid his delicate weights in the pan of his incomparable precision balance. For this it took two generations and two kinds of invention, one in social forms and the other in scientific technique. This biography tells how it came to pass."--Book jacket

Book In Praise of Ordinary People

Download or read book In Praise of Ordinary People written by M. Jacob and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-17 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discipline of social history has still not given enough attention to the ways in which the perceptions and roles of "ordinary" people changed over time. In these fascinating British and Dutch cases, we see how the study of this evolution imparts historical texture and enables us to understand early modernity with greater clarity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Painting with Fire shows how experiments with chemicals known to change visibly over the course of time transformed British pictorial arts of the long eighteenth century—and how they can alter our conceptions of photography today. As early as the 1670s, experimental philosophers at the Royal Society of London had studied the visual effects of dynamic combustibles. By the 1770s, chemical volatility became central to the ambitious paintings of Sir Joshua Reynolds, premier portraitist and first president of Britain’s Royal Academy of Arts. Valued by some critics for changing in time (and thus, for prompting intellectual reflection on the nature of time), Reynolds’s unstable chemistry also prompted new techniques of chemical replication among Matthew Boulton, James Watt, and other leading industrialists. In turn, those replicas of chemically decaying academic paintings were rediscovered in the mid-nineteenth century and claimed as origin points in the history of photography. Tracing the long arc of chemically produced and reproduced art from the 1670s through the 1860s, the book reconsiders early photography by situating it in relationship to Reynolds’s replicated paintings and the literal engines of British industry. By following the chemicals, Painting with Fire remaps familiar stories about academic painting and pictorial experiment amid the industrialization of chemical knowledge.
