Book Corporate Social Responsibility and Corporate Finance in Japan

Download or read book Corporate Social Responsibility and Corporate Finance in Japan written by Megumi Suto and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-24 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the linkages between the evolution of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and corporate financing and governance in Japan since the late 2000s. Since the 1990s, increasing economic and financial globalization has steadily eroded the Japanese style of business based on relationships and influenced the awareness and practices of CSR that are unique to Japanese companies. In Japan’s two “lost decades” after the bubble economy, the business model and corporate financing seem to have continued a gradual financial reform toward a more market-oriented system. CSR awareness and practices of Japanese companies have been influenced by social and environmental issues that global society and communities face. Furthermore, the Fukushima nuclear accident in 2011 triggered increasing attention paid to the responsibility of business toward society. In this process, major players in corporate governance and components of governance structure have continued to change. The conventional view of Japanese corporate governance and corporate finance is too narrow to understand this field in Japan. This book is based on empirical research to investigate how multifaceted CSR has aligned with business and finance and has influenced the corporate governance structure of Japanese companies. The findings and discussions in this book act are stepping stones in further research on the linkages between business and society, and provide empirical evidence on changes in Japanese corporate finance and governance.

Book Developing University Social Responsibility

Download or read book Developing University Social Responsibility written by Keikoh Ryu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the growing importance of information disclosure in Japanese universities in the context of the country’s changing circumstances from both a macroscopic and microscopic perspective, with a focus on the concept of universities as organizations. This macroscopic analysis is based on available data concerning the various information disclosure practices of Japanese universities and includes a discussion of their strengths and weaknesses. As for the microscopic analysis, questionnaires and various other quantitative methods have been used to study overall satisfaction with the level of disclosure among students and teachers in public and private universities, including differences between Japanese and Chinese students. The results of these surveys have then been analyzed to identify the main factors informing students’ views on the subject. Finally, additional insight into the practice of information disclosure in Japanese universities has been provided in a series of representative case studies, which should help promote further study concerning the practical applications of such disclosure. Based on the above analysis, this book proposes a social responsibility-based approach to university information disclosure, which incorporates stakeholder theory-based identification of public information content, an underlying focus on disclosure as a means to realize universities’ social responsibilities, identification of the types of information that universities should seek to disclose, recommendations for developing a framework for the systematic disclosure of such information, and recent disclosure trends. As part of this approach, recommendations concerning the arrangement of different sources of information, thoughts on building a publicly accessible platform for sharing university information, and key points underlying the systematic disclosure of information within universities are also proposed. Finally, this book is helpful in identifying further areas of research, including but not necessarily limited to the ideas and legal principles underlying the construction of a university information disclosure system, the development of information disclosure systems based on social responsibility, and the development of various standards for the disclosure of information. The ideal approach would ensure that all stakeholders are provided with meaningful access to relevant information, and that transparency takes precedence over any competing considerations as part of an overriding effort to improve university administration and oversight.

Book Adoption of Corporate Social Responsibility by Japanese Companies

Download or read book Adoption of Corporate Social Responsibility by Japanese Companies written by Holtschneider, Uwe and published by IUDICIUM Verlag. This book was released on 2015 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a topical issue in many countries. What are the drivers for the global spread of explicit CSR – practices that are demonstrated to the outside – even in countries where companies had addressed CSR implicitly? What catalyzes organizations to adopt CSR and how does their adoption influence other companies’ likelihood to adopt CSR? This book approaches the recent world-wide adoption of CSR practices as part of the global spread of management concepts. The trend to adopt CSR is examined among Japanese companies, because they have rapidly adopted CSR practices in the last two decades. Existing empirical research on CSR in Japan that has focused mainly on anecdotal evidence on a small number of outstanding companies is extended by employing both qualitative and quantitative empirical research methods. Analyzing drivers for the adoption of CSR practices, organizational characteristics of adopting companies, and how increasing adoption influences the likelihood to adopt provides insights into how Japanese institutions and stakeholders facilitated rapid CSR adoption and the process of CSR diffusion.

Book Corporate Social Responsibility in Asia

This book examines the theory and practice of CSR in Asia. The philosophical and ideological underpinnings of CSR are rooted in Anglo-American and European principles of liberal democratic rights, justice and societal structures. This book not only considers the impact of Western CSR practices in Asia, but also provides much needed Asian perspectives on this issue. It investigates the operation of CSR in different countries across Asia, including China, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand and Bangladesh – comparing the different meanings given to CSR, and the varying degrees of success experienced in different national contexts. This book argues if CSR is ever to revolutionize the manner in which we trade then it is needs to open itself up to the full variety of social responsibility as it occurs around the world. The book re-maps and refines debates about CSR as a global phenomenon, and will be of great value to professionals making strategic decisions in the global business environment.

Book Issues and Stakeholders of Corporate Social Responsibility Reports in Japan

Download or read book Issues and Stakeholders of Corporate Social Responsibility Reports in Japan written by Nila Firdausi Nuzula and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being interested with Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities in particular Japanese culture, the author pursuits to examine to which issues and stakeholder Japanese business entity stand their CSR activities for. To answer these questions, this paper examines CSR reports of 6 Japanese industries which publish their English version in pdf-format, by using content analysis. The unit of analysis is word based. Before starting to search words from each report, the author determined some keywords derived from Keidanren CSR Matrix. The matrix is published by the Nippon Keidanren (The Japan Federation of Economic Organization). This paper describes that particular CSR-related-words can be applied to assess toward what issues and which stakeholders the companies address their CSR activities. Interesting results have found. Number of words for each report portrays a tendency that most Japan's manufactures engage to CSR activities toward environment issue primarily, meanwhile, service industry might emphasize in information issue. As appeared in the reports environment issue contributes in building Japan's model of practicing CSR, meanwhile corporate philanthropy becomes the least issue reported publicly. Regarding stakeholders analysis, all industries attempt to comply with basic principle such as regulation, laws and guidelines. Other stakeholders, such as employees, business partners, community, customers, shareholders have different level of importance in each industry. It implies that different industries with their particular nature of business have different stakeholders to whom firms address their CSR activities. It has an important implication that measuring Corporate Social Performance on CSR activities should consider particular business environment of companies.

Book Corporate Social Responsibility Reporting in Developing Countries

Download or read book Corporate Social Responsibility Reporting in Developing Countries written by Dr Ataur Rahman Belal and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2012-11-28 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically, the study of corporate social responsibility (CSR) reporting has largely been within the context of Western economies. However, in the wake of highly publicized incidents such as Bhopal and the struggle of the Ogoni people in Nigeria, many large corporations now claim to be taking steps to improve their environmental and social performance within developing countries. Using the lens of stakeholder theory, this book examines whether the current practice of CSR reporting in developing countries is motivated by a desire to discharge accountability to all relevant stakeholders or whether it is being driven by the imperative of advancing corporate economic interests. While concepts like CSR reporting have become more fashionable, they vary widely in different national contexts; this book therefore clarifies the types and roles of CSR reporting and the underlying corporate motivations. The author considers the current CSR reporting practices in a number of developing countries, with particular attention given to illuminating a case study of Bangladesh.

Book The Effect of Corporate Social Responsibility Disclosures on Share Prices in Japan and the UK

Download or read book The Effect of Corporate Social Responsibility Disclosures on Share Prices in Japan and the UK written by Suzanne Bowerman and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates whether corporate social responsibility disclosure (CSRD) is associated with firms' market values in order to assess whether CSRD provides incremental value relevant information to investors. A modified Ohlson (1995) model is used, which is a widely accepted equity valuation model in accounting research. The findings suggest that investors in the UK consider CSRD information in the total information set they use for their investment decision-making, whereas Japanese investors do not appear to find that CSRD provides incremental information over and above financial information to assist in their valuations of firms. These findings have implications for investors and regulators, specifically around the control and governance of firms.

Book The Effects of Stakeholders on CSR Disclosure

Download or read book The Effects of Stakeholders on CSR Disclosure written by Chika Saka and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examined the effects of stakeholders on firms' CSR information disclosures. In Japan, many firms voluntarily disclose CSR information, with disclosure practices varying across firms. This paper quantified the CSR information released by 236 Japanese listed firms and examined the relationship between CSR information disclosures and the information needs of firm stakeholders. The results revealed that (1) the information needs of external stakeholders, including governments, creditors, consumers and local residents induced firms to disclose CSR information, (2) internal stakeholders have no effects on CSR information disclosure, and (3) CSR advocacy groups as intermediary stakeholders exerted a positive effect on CSR disclosure. The results suggest different relationship between CSR information disclosures and stakeholders' information needs by CSR categories. These findings also reinforce the suggestion that the different stakeholder types (internal, external, and intermediary) have dissimilar CSR information needs. This research would contribute to our understanding of the effect of stakeholders on firms' CSR information disclosure more inclusively.

Book Corporate Social Responsibility Corporate Governance and Auditing in Japan

Download or read book Corporate Social Responsibility Corporate Governance and Auditing in Japan written by Ryuuichiro Kurihama and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper clarifies the issues and future challenges that Japanese corporations are facing through discussion of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in Japan. And it also clarifies the relationship between CSR, corporate governance, and auditing in Japan while it examines the concept of auditing as corporate auditing. In recent years, we see a growing trend toward discussion of CSR. However, CSR varies depending on the country, region, and corporation while the background to discussion about CSR and the issue and future challenges of CSR vary. We need to examine the background to discussion about CSR and the issues and future challenges of CSR in Japan. Thus, I begin by considering the current status of CSR in Japan. Then I argue corporate governance in Japan because it is necessary to ensure the implementation of CSR. Based on the foregoing discussions, I examine how auditing contributes to reestablishing the mutual trust of corporations and society as well as how auditing must be changed in line with CSR, and present a new analytical framework of auditing as a new view in Japan.
