Book The Development of a British Columbia Achievement Test for Eighth Grade Industrial Arts

Download or read book The Development of a British Columbia Achievement Test for Eighth Grade Industrial Arts written by Gregory Crawford Cook and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to develop an achievement test suitable for eighth grade industrial arts, in the Province of British Columbia. The test was designed to conform to the limitations established in the curriculum bulletin, Industrial Arts 8, authorized in 1962. Norms were to be developed from the data resulting from the administration of the test in final form. On the basis of the results the test was to be examined for reliability and validity of the questions. The review of literature helped establish the need for such a test, and suggested the form of some of the test items. It was of little assistance in the actual construction of standardized tests in industrial arts. The test items were developed with consideration to aims, outcomes, course content, as defined in the curriculum bulletin. They were also developed with references considered suitable for this grade level. Questions were constructed in each of the four areas studied in eighth grade. These areas are woodwork, metalwork, electricity, and drafting. The trial set of questions were then submitted to a jury, consisting of personnel engaged in teacher education, and supervision, teachers of industrial arts, and student teachers of industrial arts. On the basis of the criticism received the questions were revised. A test, consisting of 240 questions, 60 in each area, woodwork, metalwork, electricity, and drafting was prepared, This test was administered to 96 grade eight students in June, 1963. These questions were revised using both subjective analysis as well as objective item analysis. The subjective analysis was undertaken by a graduate class of experienced industrial arts teachers during the summer of 1963. The revised test contains 50 questions in each section. The ten poorest questions in each section were eliminated, and the remaining questions improved wherever possible. The test in final form was completed by 684 eighth grade students in 12 British Columbia schools in June, 1964. The mean for the test in final form was found to be 84.71. The means for the individual sections of the test were as follows: woodwork 26.06, metalwork 24.87, electricity 22.64, drafting 12.97. The standard deviation is 19.73, 71.48% of all scores lie between plus one standard deviation, and minus one standard deviation. The reliability coefficient, calculated using the analysis of variance technique, is .89. An item analysis of all questions has been made and is discussed and full information presented.

Book Women and Educational Leadership

Download or read book Women and Educational Leadership written by Margaret Grogan and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-11-11 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking book presents a new way of looking at leadership that is anchored in research on women leaders in education. The authors examine how successful women in education lead and offer suggestions and ideas for developing and honing these exemplary leadership practices. Women and Educational Leadership shows how the qualities that characterize women's approaches to leadership differ from traditional approaches?whether the traditional leader is a woman or a man. The authors reveal that women leaders are more collaborative by nature and demonstrate a commitment to social justice. They tend to bring an instructional focus to leadership, include spiritual dimensions in their work, and strive for balance between the personal and professional. This important book offers a new model of leadership that shifts away from the traditional heroic notion of leadership to the collective account of leadership that focuses on leadership for a specific purpose—like social justice. The authors include illustrative examples of leaders who have brought diverse groups to work toward common ground. They also show how leadership is a way to facilitate and support the work of organizational members. The ideas and suggestions presented throughout the book can help the next generation fulfill the promise of a new tradition of leadership. Women and Educational Leadership is part of the Jossey-Bass Leadership Library in Education series.

Book The Social and Cultural Construction of Risk

Download or read book The Social and Cultural Construction of Risk written by B.B. Johnson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Social and Cultural Construction of Risk: Issues, Methods, and Case Studies Vincent T. Covello and Branden B. Johnson Risks to health, safety, and the environment abound in the world and people cope as best they can. But before action can be taken to control, reduce, or eliminate these risks, decisions must be made about which risks are important and which risks can safely be ignored. The challenge for decision makers is that consensus on these matters is often lacking. Risks believed by some individuals and groups to be tolerable or accept able - such as the risks of nuclear power or industrial pollutants - are intolerable and unacceptable to others. This book addresses this issue by exploring how particular technological risks come to be selected for societal attention and action. Each section of the volume examines, from a different perspective, how individuals, groups, communities, and societies decide what is risky, how risky it is, and what should be done. The writing of this book was inspired by another book: Risk and Culture: An Essay on the Selection of Technoloqical and Environmental Dangers. Published in 1982 and written by two distinguished scholars - Mary Douglas, a British social anthropologist, and Aaron Wildavsky, an American political scientist - the book received wide critical attention and offered several provocative ideas on the nature of risk selection, perception, and acceptance.
