Book excerpt: "This dissertation provides a nonlinear optimization algorithm for the long term control of Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) to remove overloads and voltage violations by optimized control of power flows and voltages in the power network. It provides a control strategy for finding the long term control settings of one or more UPFCs by considering all the possible settings and all the (N-1) topologies of a power network. Also, a simple evolutionary algorithm (EA) has been proposed for the placement of more than one UPFC in large power systems"--Abstract, leaf iv

Book Optimal Placement of Unified Power Flow Controller by Dynamic Implementation of System Variable Based Voltage Stability Indices to Enhance Voltage Stability

Download or read book Optimal Placement of Unified Power Flow Controller by Dynamic Implementation of System Variable Based Voltage Stability Indices to Enhance Voltage Stability written by Shameem Ahmad and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new approach of unified power flow controller (UPFC) optimal placement in the power system network based on dynamic analysis of voltage stability is presented in this paper. Voltage stability indices (VSIs), called line stability index LQP, voltage collapse point indicators (VCPIs), and line stability factor Lmn have been employed to explore the most suitable location for UPFC. The locations of UPFC are identified by dynamically varying loads across all the PQ buses by different percentages to satisfy the real power system conditions. The simulations are conducted in a power system computer-aided design (PSCAD) environment where IEEE-39 bus system has been chosen as case study. The effectiveness of the proposed method has been ensured from the simulation results because UPFC's placement in the obtained locations resulted in an improved voltage stability condition. Furthermore, to verify the suitability of the explored locations, a comparative study has been conducted after placing UPFC in the present locations and other locations obtained using optimization techniques like particle swarm optimization (PSO), differential evolution (DE), genetic algorithm (GA), and bacteria foraging algorithm (BFA). In all the cases, UPFC's placement in the identified locations using the proposed approach has resulted in better voltage stability condition improvement compared to heuristics approaches.

The use of the linear programming technique is considered. Using these new approaches, the application of the Optimal Power Flow is not restricted only to economical purposes for on-line real and reactive power control and voltage control but has been extended to include security considerations of power systems. Excellent work has been done to find Optimal Power Flow solutions. Various kinds of Optimal Power Flow programs have been commercially available. More work remains to be done to seek more reliable, faster solution algorithms.
