Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ibrahim al-Mazini was one of the great humorists and stylists of twentieth-century Arabic prose literature. Like an Egyptian James Thurber, he captured the foibles and triumphs of Cairo's middle classes of the 1930s and 1940s in exceptionally stylish prose. This collection gathers in one volume some of al-Mazini's best short fiction, including two novellas: Midu and His Accomplices and Ten Again. Midu is an engaging, well-liked army officer who assisted by almost every other character in the story arranges a faux heist from his uncle's library in order to allow young love to run its course. In Ten Again, a man awakes to find that he has returned to childhood, on the day of his tenth birthday: his wife, who is being wooed by a most obnoxious suitor, is now his mother, and his two sons torment him mercilessly at his birthday party. In al-Mazini's skillful hands, the short stories included here illuminate a lively fictional world: from a drunken encounter with a parrot to an undertaker's attempt to provide a cadaver with a believer's contented smile. An unmarried woman dreams of her unborn daughter, who is impatient to be born; and a reclusive author who has chosen to disappear from Cairo's literary scene is tracked down to his obvious disgust by an intrepid researcher. Rich in insight, imagination, and humor, these stories are a splendid introduction to a major figure in the early generation of Egyptian writers.

Book Unlike Any Land You Know

Download or read book Unlike Any Land You Know written by James M. Vesely and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000-07-24 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Along with General Claire Chennault's "Flying Tigers," the men and planes of the 490th Bomb Squadron became famous as the "Burma Bridge Busters." From late 1942 to the end of the war, their incredible feats of low-level bombing and strafing of Japanese-held bridges, airfields, and troop facilities in occupied Burma hindered the Japanese advance in Asia, and provided critical air support for the allies fighting on the ground. The author's uncle, a radioman/waist gunner in the 490th, was killed on a mission in the waning days of the war. This book is both a search for his memory, and a tribute to the squadron in which he proudly served and sacrificed his lifethe "Burma Bridge Busters." The author was born and raised in Chicago. In addition to writing and traveling, he is an avid fisherman, hunter, and scuba diver. He has published Seasons of Harvest, a three-volume historical novel, and is at work on a second novel titled Cumberland Road. This book is his first nonfiction work.

It’s so the soul won’t be confused, or tempted . . . Alberto Ríos, the poet laureate of Arizona, teaches at Arizona State University. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of American journalism’s best-known and most cherished stories are exaggerated, dubious, or apocryphal. They are media-driven myths, and they attribute to the news media and their practitioners far more power and influence than they truly exert. In Getting It Wrong, writer and scholar W. Joseph Campbell confronts and dismantles prominent media-driven myths, describing how they can feed stereotypes, distort understanding about the news media, and deflect blame from policymakers. Campbell debunks the notions that the Washington Post’s Watergate reporting brought down Richard M. Nixon’s corrupt presidency, that Walter Cronkite’s characterization of the Vietnam War in 1968 shifted public opinion against the conflict, and that William Randolph Hearst vowed to “furnish the war” against Spain in 1898. This expanded second edition includes a new preface and new chapters about the first Kennedy-Nixon debate in 1960, the haunting Napalm Girl photograph of the Vietnam War, and bogus quotations driven by the Internet and social media.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It seems at some point in everyone’s life, the thought runs through the mind asking, What happened, how did things change, and how did I get here? Jeff had to confront similar thoughts after he had received Christ as Lord and Savior. He had genuinely been a good kid. He started off in life wanting to like everyone. His easygoing nature attracted his peers to befriend him. In late October 1977, all that began to change. He became self-conscious, shier, and open to the concept of violence, as bullies began to target him. He believed and evidence in the book suggests that a demonic oppression began near Halloween when he was eight years old. The Jeff that was nice seemed to invite fear that had dominated much of his thoughts since he was three years old. This is a coming-of-age cautionary testimony of a good kid dealing with fears and insecurities in the worst self-destructive ways imaginable and a young adult reaching a point of being ready to throw his and other lives away. God, however, had the final say.
