Book excerpt: What makes Darron Shipe so violent and hateful that he thrives on a weak society for survival? His entire youth is spent in juvenile facilities, and his life unfolds like a nightmare as soon as he gets his first gun. The streets are his income, and now society must pay the price for his vengeance. A four-year prison term in maximum security results in numerous assaults and stabbings. Eight years later his counselor writes in her final report, "Mr. Shipe is a detriment to society, because of his violent nature and problems with anger." As soon as he is released, he returns to the one person who is responsible for all his problems--his father. Darron lays his sawed-off shotgun to his father's head and pulls the trigger! A year later, he is captured in a high-speed chase, and is held in a county jail for extradition back to Maryland. A visitation by an unknown old man with a message from God begins a series of miraculous events, which will change his life forever. The man of hate, destruction, anger, and despair becomes "A Prisoner of Hope".

Book Extreme Fabulations

Download or read book Extreme Fabulations written by Steven Shaviro and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2021-08-03 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of science fiction narratives and the light they shed on human life, the unknowable future, and the vagaries of unforeseeable change. With this book, Steven Shaviro offers a thought experiment. He discusses a number of science fiction narratives: three novels, one novella, three short stories, and one musical concept album. Shaviro not only analyzes these works in detail but also uses them to ask questions about human, and more generally, biological life: about its stubborn insistence and yet fragility; about the possibilities and perils of seeking to control it; about the aesthetic and social dimensions of human existence, in relation to the nonhuman; and about the ethical value of human life under conditions of extreme oppression and devastation. Shaviro pursues these questions through the medium of science fiction because this form of storytelling offers us a unique way of grappling with issues that deeply and unavoidably concern us but that are intractable to rational argumentation or to empirical verification. The future is unavoidably vague and multifarious; it stubbornly resists our efforts to know it in advance, let alone to guide it or circumscribe it. But science fiction takes up this very vagueness and indeterminacy and renders it into the form of a self-consciously fictional narrative. It gives us characters who experience, and respond to, the vagaries of unforeseeable change.

From her first frightening night at a shelter, Janice knew she was in over her head. She was beaten up, shaken down, and nearly stabbed by a pregnant girl. But it was still better than living at home. As Janice slipped further into street life, she nevertheless attended high school, harbored crushes, and even played the lead in the spring musical. She also roamed the streets, clubs, bars, and parks of New York City with her two best girlfriends, on the prowl for hard drugs and boys on skateboards. Together they scored coke at Danceteria, smoked angel dust in East Village squats, commiserated over their crazy mothers, and slept with one another’s boyfriends on a regular basis. A wry, mesmerizing portrait of being underprivileged, underage, and underdressed in 1980s New York City, Girlbomb provides an unflinching look at street life, survival sex, female friendships, and first loves. “A fast and engrossing read in the spirit of Girl, Interrupted.” –Entertainment Weekly “Gripping . . . a wry, compelling memoir of what it means to stand up for yourself, especially when no one else will.” –Bust “How satisfying to watch Erlbaum survive adolescence and produce a smart, engaging book.” –The New York Times Book Review “Erlbaum’s survival is hard-won, the journey rendered with page-turning intensity.” –New York Post “A fast and engrossing read in the spirit of Girl, Interrupted.” –Entertainment Weekly “Gritty . . . perversely riveting.
