This book was released on 2018-02-22 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foundations of Einstein's Theory of Gravitation I have gained the impression in perusing these pages that the author has succeeded in rendering the fundamental ideas of the theory accessible to all who are to some extent conversant with the methods of reasoning of the exact sciences. The relations of the problem to mathematics, to the theory of knowledge, physics and astronomy are expounded in a fascinating style, and the depth of thought of Riemann, a mathematician so far in advance of his time, has in particular received warm appreciation. This book was released on 2018-03-16 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of General Relativity and Gravitation Some of my readers will miss, perhaps, in this volume the enthusiastic tone which usually permeates the books and pamphlets that have been written on the subject (with a notable exception of Einstein's own writings). Yet the author is the last man to be blind to the admirable boldness and the severe architectonic beauty of Einstein's theory. But it has seemed that beauties of such a kind are rather enhanced than obscured by the adoption of a sober tone and an apparently cold form of presentation. Book A Theory of Gravitation and Related Phenomena Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Theory of Gravitation and Related Phenomena Classic Reprint written by William Jasper Spillman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-08 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Theory of Gravitation, and Related Phenomena This paper has been written in the brief intervals that could be spared from other duties, and was first completed in July, 1911. It was then laid aside and remained untouched for four years, though during this time spare moments were devoted to further study of the subject. In August, 1915, a change was made in one of the assumptions concerning the properties of the ether, and about one fifth of the paper was rewritten. The writer regrets that time has not been available for fuller development of the theory. The idea that the gravitational attraction between two bodies is due to distortion of the ether between them, in virtue of which a stress exists which is inversely proportional to the distortion causing it, which idea is more or less vaguely expressed in the literature of the subject, and which appears to be more or less firmly fixed in the minds of many physicists, has always seemed abhorrent to the writer. According to this idea, the potential energy represented by the attraction between the bodies of the universe is stored in the ether, the total energy increasing as the stress representing it decreases. According to the theory here presented this energy is dynamic, and is found in the internal energy of atoms. The amount of energy of motion a body can generate by attraction on other bodies is thus limited to the amount of its own internal energy. Book Relativity and Gravitation Classic Reprint

Download or read book Relativity and Gravitation Classic Reprint written by J. Malcolm Bird and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Relativity and Gravitation Chapter II. Is intended so to bring the mind of the reader into contact with certain philosophical prob lems presented to us by our experiences with the external world and our efforts to learn the facts about it, that he may approach the subject of rela tivity with an appreciation of the place it occupies as a phase of human thought and a pillar of the scientific structure. Until the reader is aware of the existence of these problems and the directions taken by the efforts, successful and unsuccessful, to un ravel them, he is not equipped to comprehend the doctrine of relativity at all; he is in much the same case as a child whose education had reached only the primer stage, if asked to read the masterpieces of literature. He lacks not alone the vocabulary, but equally the mental background on which the vocabulary is based. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Space and Time in Contemporary Physics an Introduction to the Theory of Gravitation Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-11-06 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Space and Time, in Contemporary Physics, an Introduction to the Theory of Gravitation Probably no physical theory in recent times has given rise to more discussion amongst philosophers than the principle of relativity. One school of thought agrees that physicists may well be led to recast their notions of space and time in the light of experimental results. Another school, however, is of opinion that these questions are no concern of the physicists, who should make their theories fit the philosophers' conceptions of these fundamental units. The theory of relativity consists of two parts, the old special theory, and the more recent general theory. Book The Mathematical Theory of Relativity Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Mathematical Theory of Relativity Classic Reprint written by Arthur Stanley Eddington and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-26 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mathematical Theory of Relativity The reader is expected to have a general acquaintance with the less technical discussion of the theory given in Space, Time and Gravitation, although there is not often occasion to make direct reference to it. But it is eminently desirable to have a general grasp of the revolution of thought associated with the theory of Relativity before approaching it along the narrow lines of strict mathematical deduction. In the former work we ex plained how the older conceptions of physics had become untenable, and traced the gradual ascent to the ideas which must supplant them. Here our task is to formulate mathematically this new conception of the world and to follow out the consequences to the fullest extent. The present widespread interest in the theory arose from the verification of certain minute deviations from Newtonian laws. To those who are still hesitating and reluctant to leave the old faith, these deviations will remain the chief centre of interest; but for those who have caught the spirit of the new ideas the observational predictions form only a minor part of the subject. It is claimed for the theory that it leads to an understanding of the world of physics clearer and more penetrating than that previously attained, and it has been my aim to develop the theory in a form which throws most light on the origin and significance of the great laws of physics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Review of the Theory of Universal Gravitation Before submitting objections to this theory, or venturing any suggestions with regard to it, a few preliminary considerations may not be out of place. It is then an established theory, is quite generally accepted, has the weight of authority in its favor, and for these reasons at least is more formidable to combat. Book Topics in the Foundations of General Relativity and Newtonian Gravitation Theory

Download or read book Topics in the Foundations of General Relativity and Newtonian Gravitation Theory written by David B. Malament and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2012-04-02 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Topics in the Foundations of General Relativity and Newtonian Gravitation Theory, David B. Malament presents the basic logical-mathematical structure of general relativity and considers a number of special topics concerning the foundations of general relativity and its relation to Newtonian gravitation theory. These special topics include the geometrized formulation of Newtonian theory (also known as Newton-Cartan theory), the concept of rotation in general relativity, and Gödel spacetime. One of the highlights of the book is a no-go theorem that can be understood to show that there is no criterion of orbital rotation in general relativity that fully answers to our classical intuitions. Topics is intended for both students and researchers in mathematical physics and philosophy of science.

Download or read book Space Time and Gravitation written by Arthur Stanley Eddington and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arthur Stanley Eddington is one of the most influential astrophysicists of the 20th century. Born in Great Britain, he is credited as being a leading teacher of Einstein's theory of relativity in the English world. He is considered a great philosopher of science, and was a boisterous advocate for the popularization of science until his death in 1944. This book, Space, Theory, also titled Space, Time, and Gravitation: An Outline of the General Relativity Theory is one of his most important and well-read books. Originally published in 1920, this book was written at a time when information from Germany would have been limited, and thus many of Einstein's theories had not yet been completely digested by the Western world. The purpose of Space, Theory is to present the theory of relativity to those without a strong scientific or mathematical background. While mathematical equations do make frequent appearances throughout the text, they are complemented by detailed textual explanations and real-world examples. The book is presented in a logical manner. The first chapter discusses the very nature of geometry, and how Euclidean geometry is not sufficient for a discussion of the theory of relativity. One must always consider the dimension of time, Eddington argues. It is this discussion that sets the stage for the remainder of the theories presented in this book. Almost one hundred years after it was written, there are still few better books introducing Einstein's theory of relativity to the layman. Eddington is gifted in taking immensely complex theories and breaking them down to a level that demonstrates their significance in every day life. If you are at all interested in astrophysics, Space, Theory is a must read. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
