Book A Testing and Evaluation Protocol to Assess Seal Coat Binder aggregate Compatibility

Download or read book A Testing and Evaluation Protocol to Assess Seal Coat Binder aggregate Compatibility written by Sanjaya Priyantha Senadheera and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research project was commissioned to develop a new testing protocol to assess the compatibility of asphalt binders and aggregates used in seal coats and surface treatments. The study encompassed physical, chemical and mechanical aspects of compatibility as well as the construction factors that affect the bond between the aggregate and binder in seal coats. Prior to the development of the testing protocol, a constructability review was undertaken to assess the conditions under which incompatibility between binders and aggregate occur. Four different tests were conducted on several aggregate-binder combinations; modified net adsorption test, TechMRT aggregate pull-out test, interfacial bonding (pull-out) test and the newly developed performance-based seal-coat aggregate-binder compatibility test. Based on the constructability review, aggregate-binder combinations were identified to represent the "best" and "worst" performing material combinations. These combinations were used to test the feasibility of the testing protocol to include both extremes of the performance spectrum.

Book Testing and Characterization of Sustainable Innovative Bituminous Materials and Systems

Download or read book Testing and Characterization of Sustainable Innovative Bituminous Materials and Systems written by Manfred N. Partl and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the detailed results of five task groups of the RILEM technical committee TC 237-SIB on Testing and Characterization of Sustainable Innovative Bituminous Materials and Systems. It concentrates on specific new topics in asphalt binder and mixture testing, dealing with new developments in asphalt testing, in particular also in view of new innovative bituminous materials, such as hot and cold recycled mixtures, grid reinforced pavements and recycled Reclaimed Asphalt Pavements (RAP), where test methods developed for traditional asphalt concrete are not a priori applicable. The main objective is providing a basis for pre-standardization by comparing different test methods and showing ways for fundamental improvements. Thus, the book also points the way for a further advanced chemo-physical understanding of materials and their role in pavement systems relying on fundamental material properties and suitable models for describing and predicting the intrinsic mechanisms that determine the material behavior.

Book Quantifying the Benefits of Improved Rolling of Chip Seals

Download or read book Quantifying the Benefits of Improved Rolling of Chip Seals written by Y. Richard Kim and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents an improvement in the rolling protocol for chip seals based on an evaluation of aggregate retention performance and aggregate embedment depth. The flip-over test (FOT), Vialit test, modified sand circle test, digital image processing technique, and the third-scale Model Mobile Loading Simulator (MMLS3) are employed to evaluate the effects of the various rolling parameters and to measure chip seal performance. The samples used to evaluate the chip seal rolling protocol were obtained directly from field construction. In order to determine the optimal rolling protocol, the effects of roller type, number of coverages, coverage distribution on the sublayers of a multiple chip seal (i.e., the split seal and triple seal), and rolling pattern are evaluated using the results of aggregate retention performance tests, the modified sand circle method, and the digital image process. It is found that two types of roller, the pneumatic tire roller and the combination roller, are recommended as the optimal rollers for the chip seal. In addition, it is found that the optimal number of coverages for the chip seal is three coverages. Moreover, the performance of the triple seal without coverage at the bottom layer does not affect the aggregate retention performance, although the split seal does require coverage at the bottom layer. Finally, it is found from the MMLS3 results that the delayed rolling time between the spreading of the aggregate and the initial rolling significantly affects the aggregate loss, and that the delayed rolling time is related to the aggregate moisture condition and the ambient temperature. Effects of different rolling patterns are investigated based on the delayed rolling time and roller speeds, and recommendations are developed for two- and three-roller scenarios.

Book Investigation of Chip Seal Aggregate Retention Using Sweep and Long Term Performance Testing

Download or read book Investigation of Chip Seal Aggregate Retention Using Sweep and Long Term Performance Testing written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chip seals are a commonly used surface treatment used to decrease the deterioration rate of pavement surfaces. Chip seals typically consist of an application of emulsion and cover aggregate. Failure can be driven by improper strength development and inadequate bonding over time. Additionally, chip seal service life varies and long term performance prediction models are not well established. This study has two primary goals. The first goal is to investigate aggregate retention characteristics of chip seal specimens, while investigating material compatibility by means of the Sweep-M test. The second goal is to begin developing a long term performance (LTP) test to represent cores obtained from full-scale chip seal projects. Conditioning and testing protocols for LTP specimens are evaluated for representative chip seal behavior over long periods. Results confirm material interaction and favor the incorporation of sweep testing for optimum performance. Future testing is recommended for in-depth, LTP test protocol evaluation.

Book Adopting Chip Sealing Performance Based Approaches to Determine Rational Design Quantities

Download or read book Adopting Chip Sealing Performance Based Approaches to Determine Rational Design Quantities written by Minas Guirguis and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chip seal research advocates for performing rational design computations prior to construction to determine the initial chip and binder application rates. Research indicated that a major concern in chip seal construction industry is the lack of following a formal/documented computational design approach. This study is a result of research that investigated ways to improve chip seal design specifications in Oregon State, focusing on field application rates. The objective of this article is to encourage agencies and contractors to adopt a formal established design approach to determine their aggregates and binder application rates. This is established through identifying the parameters considered in the design while showing straightforward procedures to follow formal design approaches. Chip seal design calls for conducting laboratory and field evaluations and uses the results as input data to estimate the appropriate quantities of materials. Thus, involved parties at the design stage are required to (1) understand the properties of chip seal materials (aggregate and binder), (2) identify the pre-seal road condition, and (3) use said information in the design process. This study uses various roadways located in Klamath Falls, Oregon to verify the importance of using rational design procedures. The roadways were constructed in accordance with Oregon Department of Transportation specifications; however, application rates were based upon the agency's previous experience rather than using a rational design approach. The study compares roadways' infield application rates and rationally estimated rates based upon two commonly used methodologies, namely McLeod and New Zealand. Findings shows that roadways constructed using infield application rates close to the rationally estimated rates had better embedment and a longer predicted life span when compared to the rest of roadways that had excessive aggregate amounts and less binder content.
