Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New System of Mineralogy, in the Form of Catalogue: After the Manner of Baron Born's Systematic Catalogue of the Collection of Fossils of Mlle. Eleonore De Raab IN committing the following Work to the ptefs, ' the Author has been influenced by the fame motives that induced him to publilh his svsi'lima'r'tc arrangement oi? Remnants in 1795; of which this may be confidered a continuation, necefl'ary to complete the defign with which that arrangement was undertaken. He had been employed, as then mention ed, in forming from the extenfive and valuable collection of the late Earl of Bute a more compendious and (elect cabinet, now in the pofl'eflion of Sir St. Aubry, Barr. And as this required not only a confiderable length of time, but alfo a degree of attention much beyond what was at firfi conceived necefi'ary for fuch an undertak ing, the author thought, that in making public the fyfiem which he had adopted, he might confiderably abridge the labour of thofe who fhould hereafter engage in a fimilar talk, and likewife render an acceptable fervice to foch as Wltd to acquire a comprehenfive knowledge of mineralogy, but who had neither leifure nor inclination, even if they had an opportunity, to confult the numerous works through which the necefi'ary information lay feattered. Befides, as no endeavours had been (pared to render the collection from which that fynopfis was drawn up, one of the moft perfefl in a fcientific point of view, it was hoped that the annexed catalogue would afi'ord to fuch as had advanced a confiderable way in the bufinefs of collecting, an opportunity of de termining the comparative value of what they already pofi'efl'cd, as well as what articles might yet be wanting to render their cabinets more complete. Book Igneous Rocks A Classification and Glossary of Terms

Download or read book Igneous Rocks A Classification and Glossary of Terms written by R. W. Le Maitre and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-01-13 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decades of field and microscope studies, and more recent quantitative geochemical analyses have resulted in a vast, and sometimes overwhelming, array of nomenclature and terminology associated with igneous rocks. This book presents a complete classification of igneous rocks based on all the recommendations of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) Subcommission on the Systematics of Igneous Rocks. The glossary of igneous terms has been fully updated since the first edition and now includes 1637 entries, of which 316 are recommended by the Subcommission. Incorporating a comprehensive bibliography of source references for all the terms included in the glossary, this book is an indispensable reference guide for all geologists studying igneous rocks, either in the field or the laboratory. It presents a standardised and widely accepted naming scheme that will allow geologists to interpret terminology in the primary literature and provide formal names for rock samples based on petrographic analyses. It is also supported by a website with downloadable code for chemical classifications.

Download or read book Hollywood Highbrow written by Shyon Baumann and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's moviegoers and critics generally consider some Hollywood products--even some blockbusters--to be legitimate works of art. But during the first half century of motion pictures very few Americans would have thought to call an American movie "art." Up through the 1950s, American movies were regarded as a form of popular, even lower-class, entertainment. By the 1960s and 1970s, however, viewers were regularly judging Hollywood films by artistic criteria previously applied only to high art forms. In Hollywood Highbrow, Shyon Baumann for the first time tells how social and cultural forces radically changed the public's perceptions of American movies just as those forces were radically changing the movies themselves. The development in the United States of an appreciation of film as an art was, Baumann shows, the product of large changes in Hollywood and American society as a whole. With the postwar rise of television, American movie audiences shrank dramatically and Hollywood responded by appealing to richer and more educated viewers. Around the same time, European ideas about the director as artist, an easing of censorship, and the development of art-house cinemas, film festivals, and the academic field of film studies encouraged the idea that some American movies--and not just European ones--deserved to be considered art.

Book Moon Face and Other Stories

Download or read book Moon Face and Other Stories written by Jack London and published by Lindhardt og Ringhof. This book was released on 2021-07-07 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We’ve all taken a dislike to someone for no real reason. But few of us nurture this hatred like the narrator of "Moon-Face". The target of his irrational malice is a man named John Claverhouse. With cold precision, the narrator sets to planning the man’s downfall. Why he has this urge, he can’t explain. But he knows he’ll feel immense satisfaction when John Claverhouse is made to suffer. In this macabre little tale, Jack London pinpoints a very common but unpleasant human trait. And then takes it to a horrifying extreme. This short story collection also includes "All Gold Canyon", which was adapted as part of the Netflix anthology movie "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs". Jack London (1876–1916) was one of the first American writers to achieve worldwide celebrity. He did so with rugged adventure stories set in forbidding landscapes. And heroes who survive by embracing their most primal instincts. His breakthrough best seller was "The Call of the Wild". Inspired by his time in the Klondike Gold Rush, this hard-hitting novel is told from the perspective of a sled dog named Buck. It’s inspired many adaptations, including a big-budget movie starring Harrison Ford. Among London’s other notable works are "White Fang", also featuring a canine protagonist, as well as "The Sea-Wolf", "Martin Eden" and "The Iron Heel".
