It attempts to be a cartographic complement to John Richard Green's History of the English People. The experience Of fifteen years' teaching of History in England, America, and on the continent has convinced the author that no clear and permanent idea of past events can be Obtained, unless by disproportionately hard study, without projecting historic events on a map. Quite apart from the theoretically certain in uence of the geographical configuration and position of a country on its history, it is beyond any doubt that a graphic representation of the leading events of political history is the one thing needed to facilitate a full and living knowledge of the past. Historical maps giving nothing but the locality and names of the places where events happened can, however, not be held to project these events plastically. Considering that Of all the powers of recalling things or ideas, the memory for movements and their incident places is by far the commonest and strongest; considering, further, that the events of History are mostly not static but of a decidedly dynamic nature, it is evident that any means of representing the movements Of historical events by graphic methods suggesting movements will necessarily give a truer and more impressive mental picture of the events than mere words can ever do. Finally, it is unquestionable that in colour there is a very powerful aid to memory, people, as a rule, remembering colours much more easily than black lines. I had been brought up in the belief that one Englishman could beat three Johnny Crapauds. But here all my illusions on that score were shattered at one rude blow, for about one picture in. Every three represented a defeat of the English in either a naval or a military engagement. Then I made up my mind with Sir Robert Walpole, that I would study anything but history, for history must be false. Some such awakening has no doubt come to almost every thinking man or woman who has been brought up on the old methods of teaching the history of their country, whether they be English or American, French or German, Turk or Russian - this no doubt has its effect in inspiring a patriotic feeling; in keeping alive a belief in the invincibleness of one's own nation; a faith in its good star, which has led men on to further victories and inspired them to yet more valorous deeds than their forefathers have performed. The text book is to be used as the guide and background for class exercises, and it is particularly necessary that the teacher, before assigning lessons to the class, get a grasp of a whole period its organization and proportion as presented in the text. Portions of the history vary in difficulty and in value and lessons should vary in length accordingly. It is a serious mistake to assign lessons of uniform length. Importance of Geography and Map Work. The primal forces which shape history are the land and the people, hence the development of the history of a country must be traced against this background of nature. To aid the pupil in seeing the close connection between geography and history, the configuration of the land must be carefully studied; every event in the political geography should be brought out distinctly in the lesson. Maps and map work are indispensable features to successful history teaching. Wall maps and atlases are valuable aids, but where these cannot be obtained, blackboard outlines and colored chalk will be found to be an excellent substitute. The abundant maps in the text are designed to aid in historical geography and in map work. In the preparation of the lesson these should be carefully studied, and should be used for class discussion. The pupil should have outline maps, such as are prepared by many pub lishers, and should fill in the events and places mentioned in the text.
