Abstract: Polymer-supported catalysts and reagents have been widely used in organic chemistry because they could facilitate the purification procedures and usually be recycled. Much research has been directed to polymer-supported catalysts and reagents, mainly focusing on these aspects, such as new polymer support, new application in organic chemistry, different modifications and so on. Many polymer-supported phosphine reagents have been developed for Wittig reaction. However, most of them suffer from swelling issue or low loading. A new polyethlyeneimine-supported triphenylphosphine has been synthesized and used as a highly loaded bifunctional homogeneous reagent in a range of one-pot Wittig reactions. All the substrates afforded desired products in high yields after only simple purification procedures. Furthermore, it also served efficiently in reaction cascades involving a one-pot Wittig reaction followed by conjugate reduction of alkene products. In these transformations the phosphine oxide generated in Wittig reaction served as the catalyst for activating trichlorosilane in the subsequent reduction reaction. Triphenylphosphine oxide is always considered as a byproduct of Wittig and Mitsunobu reactions which complicates the purification procedures. One option to utilize it is its application in halogenation reaction with oxalyl halide. Heterogeneous polymer-supported triphenylphosphine oxides based on the rasta resin architecture have been synthesized, and applied as reagent precursors in a wide range of halogenation reactions. The rasta resin-triphenylphosphine oxides reacted with either oxalyl chloride or oxalyl bromide to form the corresponding halophosphonium salts, and these in turn reacted with alcohols, aldehydes, aziridines and epoxides to form halogenated products in high yields after simple purification. The polymer-supported triphenylphosphine oxides formed as a byproduct during these reactions could be recovered and reused numerous times with no appreciable decrease in reactivity. Another option is to use triphenylphosphine oxide as catalyst in organic synthesis. A highly regioselective 1,4-reduction of conjugated polyunsaturated ketones catalyzed by triphenylphosphine oxide is described. In the presence of triphenylphosphine oxide, conjugated di-, tri-, and tetraenones were selectively α,β-reduced using trichlorosilane without over reduction or isomerization, and all the substrates rendered desired products in high yields. Furthermore, 1,4-reduction products were successfully obtained in sequential one-pot Wittig/conjugate reduction reaction, triphenylphosphine oxide generated in Wittig reaction served as the catalyst for reduction reaction. In addition, natural moth pheromones and their analogues were synthesized in high yields using this method. Finally, the synthesis of γ-sanshool and hydroxy-γ-sanshool is depicted. The synthetic route started from simple and commercially available building blocks using an alkyne for E, E-2,4-diene group of the key synthetic intermediate 2E,4E,8Z,10E,12E-tetradecapentaenoic acid, which in turn was converted into both γ-sanshool and hydroxy-γ-sanshool by reaction with the appropriate amines. Among chiral organocatalysts, C2-symmetrical chiral phosphorus acids (CPAs) occupy a rather special place because they can catalyze numerous transformations as Brønsted acids, however, they suffer from serious limitations such as: extremely high cost (they are much too expensive for use on an industrial scale, and often too expensive even on much smaller academic scales), very high molecular weight, inability to access both enantiomers without a significant and separate synthetic effort, difficulty in catalyst-immobilization, etc. In order to solve these problems, which hamper the broader uses and applications of CPAs, our proposed approach is to rely on compounds in which the phosphorus atom is chiral (called P-stereogenic, P-chiral, or P-chirogenic) but the rest of the molecule is not. This dissertation presents our development and research findings for the synthesis of chiral phosphorus acids as well as their application in asymmetric organocatalysis.

Methods used by nature for phosphorus-carbon bond-formation, or in the chemistry of other elements such as silicon, are discussed as model processes for the future of phosphorus in chemical synthesis. Chapter 2 describes the discovery of [TBA][P(SiCl3)2], prepared from [TBA]3[P3O9]-.2H2O and trichlorosilane. The bis(trichlorosilyl)phosphide anion is used to prepare compounds that contain P–C, P–O, P–F, and P–H bonds in a method that bypasses white phosphorus (P4), the traditional route to organophosphorus compounds. Chapter 3 extends the phosphate precursors to [TBA][P(SiCl3)2] from trimetaphosphate to crystalline phosphoric acid. Balanced equations are developed for the formation of [TBA][P(SiCl3)2] from phosphate sources and the byproducts are identified as hexachlorodisiloxane and hydrogen gas. Extension of trichlorosilane reduction to bisulfate provides improved access the known trichlorosilylsulfide anion, [TBA][SSiCl3]. This anion was used as a thionation reagent to prepare thiobenzophenone and benzyl mercaptan from benzophenone and benzyl bromide, respectively. Chapter 4 describes the synthesis of neutral phosphine, HP(SiCl3)2, obtained by protonation of [TBA]1 with triflic acid. HP(SiCl3)2 is a highly efficient reagent for photochemical hydrophosphination of terminal alkenes. The phosphorus-silicon bonds in the hydrophosphination products can be functionalized to provide compounds of the general formulae: RPCl2, RPH2, [RP(R')3]Cl, RP(O)(H)(OH), and RP(O)(OH)2. Chapter 5 describes a method to prepare phosphiranes (three-membered rings that contain a phosphorus atom) from anthracene-based phosphinidene precursors and styrenic olefins. The phosphinidene transfer reaction requires an organoiron and fluoride catalyst. The resulting phosphirane is prepared in good yield (73%) with high stereoselectivity (>99%). Experimental investigations into the mechanism point toward the intermediacy of an iron-coordinated fluorophosphide species.

Let us mention the Wittig reaction and the related transformations, the Arbuzov- and the Pudovik reactions, the Kabachnik–Fields condensation, the Hirao reaction, the Mitsunobu reaction, etc. Other reactions, e.g., homogeneous catalytic transformations or C-C coupling reactions involve P-ligands in transition metal (Pt, Pd, etc.) complex catalysts. The synthesis of chiral organophosphorus compounds means a continuous challenge. Methods have been elaborated for the resolution of tertiary phosphine oxides and for stereoselective organophosphorus transformations. P-heterocyclic compounds, including aromatic and bridged derivatives, P-functionalized macrocycles, dendrimers and low coordinated P-fragments, are also of interest. An important segment of organophosphorus chemistry is the pool of biologically-active compounds that are searched and used as drugs, or as plant-protecting agents. The natural analogue of P-compounds may also be mentioned. Many new phosphine oxides, phosphinates, phosphonates and phosphoric esters have been described, which may find application on a broad scale. Phase transfer catalysis, ionic liquids and detergents also have connections to phosphorus chemistry. Green chemical aspects of organophosphorus chemistry (e.g., microwave-assisted syntheses, solvent-free accomplishments, optimizations, and atom-efficient syntheses) represent a dynamically developing field. Last, but not least, theoretical approaches and computational chemistry are also a strong sub-discipline within organophosphorus chemistry.
