Book Young Children Reinvent Arithmetic

Download or read book Young Children Reinvent Arithmetic written by Constance Kamii and published by Teachers College Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this fully revised second edition of the classic Young Children Reinvent Arithmetic, Constance Kamii describes and develops an innovative program of teaching arithmetic in the early elementary grades. Kamii bases her educational strategies on renowned constructivist Jean Piaget's scientific ideas of how children develop logico-mathematical thinking. Written in collaboration with a classroom teacher, and premised upon the conviction that children are capable of much more than teachers and parents generally realize, the book provides a rich theoretical foundation and a compelling explanation of educational goals and objectives. Kamii calls attention to the ways in which traditional textbook-based teaching can be harmful to children’s development of numerical reasoning, and uses extensive research and classroom-tested studies to illuminate the efficacy of the approach. This book is full of practical suggestions and developmentally appropriate activities that can be used to stimulate numerical thinking among students of varying abilities and learning styles, both within and outside of the classroom. “In this new edition of her important book, Connie Kamii demonstrates scholarship not just in what she has written, but in her willingness to incorporate new ideas and findings. Many people update their books; few assiduously revise them, confronting what they believe to be past errors or gaps in their thinking. Such intellectual honesty, along with consistent connections between theory and practice, make this book a solid contribution to mathematics education of young children.” —Douglas Clements, State University of New York at Buffalo “The development of young children’s logico-mathematical knowledge is at the heart of this text. Similar to the first edition, this revision provides a rich theoretical foundation as well as child-centered activities and principles of teaching that support problem solving, communicating, reasoning, making connections, and representing mathematical ideas. In this great resource for preservice and in-service elementary teachers, Professor Kamii continues to help us understand the implications of Piagetian theory.” —Frances R. Curcio, New York University

Robinson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Practical and Theoretical Arithemtic, in Which, in Addition to the Usual Modes of Operation, the Science of Numbers, the Prussian Canceling System, and Other Important Abbreviations, Hold a Prominent Place The public may very properly inquire, what good can be accomplished by adding another Arithmetic to the long list now in existence? Both teachers and the taught are already sufficiently perplexed, in making a selection. True, there are many arithmetics before us, claiming our attention; hut more than half of them are mere collections of questions, ordered to be solved by rules, given in a spiritless manner, having no connected system, and not recognizing the general and universal scientific character of numbers. They place arithmetic before the mind of the pupil, as an art, not as a science - they give him directions what to do, not what to think, and how to reason; and, in short, many of these books, now pressing for patronage, are already condemned by all good judges and scientific teachers. Within the last ten or fifteen years, the science of arithmetic has undergone many changes, and received many important improvements; and such improvements have appeared, little by little, and from time to time - some in one book, and some in another - nowhere presenting one grand whole; and the object of this work is, to give unity and system to all the modern improvements which present practical utility, and interweave them in the common and general system, or such parts of it as are necessarily retained; and, how far we have accomplished this object, let the competent, the unprejudiced, and the uninterested, answer. These modern improvements generally pass under the name of the canceling system; but canceling by no means includes them all, nor are they all included in numerical operations - principles, explanations, and forms, have been simplified and improved. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Practical and Theoretical Arithemtic, in Which, in Addition to the Usual Modes of Operation, the Science of Numbers, the Prussian Canceling System, and Other Important Abbreviations, Hold a Prominent Place We place much importance on the canceling or factor sys tem, in performing operations requiring multiplications and divisions, for their great utility in algebra, when the pupil arrives at that science; and that teacher who looks no fur ther than to solve a few problems in arithmetic, has not a sufficiently extended view to judge of the merits of the sys tem; therefore, let none such condemn.
