In his new book, he offers a fascinating look at how the contemporary world is characterized by an extraordinary social complexity. Book A New Philosophy of History

Download or read book A New Philosophy of History written by Frank Ankersmit and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2013-06-01 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is history? From Thucydides to Toynbee historians and nonhistorians alike have wondered how to answer this question. A New Philosophy of History reflects on developments over the last two decades in historical writing, not least the renewed interest in the status of narrative itself and the presence of the authorial "voice." Subjects include the problems of Grand Narrative, multiple voices and the personal presence of the historian in his text, the ambitions of the French Annales school and the so-called "Grand Chronicler," and the relevance of non-literary models—museum presentations and picturings—regarding historical discourse. The range of approaches found in A New Philosophy of History ensures that this book will establish itself as required reading not only for historians, but for everyone interested in literary theory, philosophy, or cultural studies. This volume presents essays by Hans Kellner, Nancy F. Partner, Richard T. Vann, Arthur C. Danto, Linda Orr, Philippe Carrard, Ann Rigney, Allan Megill, Robert Berkhofer, Stephen Bann, and Frank Ankersmit.

Book The Artist Philosopher and New Philosophy

Download or read book The Artist Philosopher and New Philosophy written by George Smith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-07-11 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Artist-Philosopher and New Philosophy, Smith argues that Western Metaphysics has indeed come to what Heidegger describes as “an end.” That is hardly to say philosophy as such is over or soon to disappear; rather, its purpose as a medium of cultural change and as a generator of history has run its course. He thus calls for a New Philosophy, conceptualized by the artist-philosopher who “makes” or “poeticizes” New Philosophy, spanning literary and theoretical discourses and operating across art in all its forms and across culture in all its locations. To this end, Smith proposes the establishment of schools and social networks that advance the training and development of artist-philosophers, as well as global digital networks that are themselves designed toward this “ever-becoming community.”

Download or read book A New Philosophy written by Edouard Le Roy and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2005-11-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Underneath and beyond the method, you have caught the intention and the spirit...Your study could not be more conscientious or true to the original." - Henri Bergson The famous French philosopher Henri Bergson had but the highest praise for Edouard le Roy's presentation of Bergson's philosophy for the general public in a couple of articles that would form the core of this book, A New Philosophy: Henri Bergson: Henri Bergson. Le Roy hoped that this volume would serve as an introduction, which would make it easier to read and understand Bergson's works, and serve as a primer to his "new philosophy." Bergson's new philosophy essentially argued that the intuition is deeper than the intellect. His work was considered the main challenge to the mechanistic view of nature. A great opponent of Cartesian dualism, he resisted the reduction of psychological phenomena to physical states. Bergson, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1927, is sometimes said to have anticipated features of relativity theory and the modern scientific theories of the mind. EDOUARD LE ROY (1870-1954) was the French philosopher Henri Bergson's most famous pupil. From 1914 until 1921 he functioned as Bergson's "permanent substitute" in the Chair of Modern Philosophy at the Collge de France while the philosopher served on French diplomatic missions.

Book The New Philosophy of Criminal Law

Download or read book The New Philosophy of Criminal Law written by Chad Flanders and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-12-16 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no more vivid example of a state’s power over its citizens than the criminal law. By criminalizing various behaviours, the state sets boundaries on what we can and cannot do. And the criminal law is in many ways unique in the harshness of its sanctions. But traditional criminal law theory has for too long focussed on the questions, “what is a crime?” and “what is the justification of punishment?” The significance of the criminal law extends beyond these questions; indeed, critical philosophical questions underlie all aspects of the criminal justice system. The criminal law engages us not just as offenders or potential offenders, but also as victims, suspects, judges and jurors, prosecutors and defenders—and as citizens. The authors in this volume go beyond traditional questions to challenge our conventional understandings of the criminal law. In doing so, they draw from a number of disciplines including philosophy, history, and social science.

Book A Little Book for New Philosophers

Download or read book A Little Book for New Philosophers written by Paul Copan and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2016-10-19 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What's the point of studying philosophy when we have theology? Is philosophy anything more than a preparation for apologetics? Often called "theology's handmaid," philosophy has sometimes suffered from an inferiority complex in the church. Many Christians see little point in it at all. But as Paul Copan contends, it is possible to affirm theology's preeminence without diminishing the value and contribution of philosophy. In A Little Book for New Philosophers, Copan offers a concise introduction to the study of philosophy. Aimed at newcomers, this brief overview is both a survey of philosophy's basic aims and categories and an apology for its proper function in the life of the Christian. "By God's grace," Copan writes, "philosophy can enhance our understanding and worship of God . . . and assist us in defending the coherence of our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ."

Book Towards a New Philosophy of Mental Health

This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents the results of the Sixteenth International Conference for Philosophy, Psychiatry and Psychology, entitled “Neuroscience, Logic and Mental Development”. This edited collection brings together selected plenary and keynote papers from the conference, and represents a major contribution to an interdisciplinary dialogue in mental health through the use of new philosophical tools, emerging from neuroscience, clinical psychology, phenomenology and epistemology. The papers gathered in this volume are divided into four parts, depending on their disciplinary paradigm. The papers included in Part I are focused on advances in neuroscience and neuroimaging as theoretical underpinnings for progress in psychiatric and psychological explanations. Special attention is paid here to the critical reappraisal of current approaches to the implementation of neuroscience in mental health. Some of these papers end with suggestions for modifications to contemporary research programs. The papers belonging to Part II contribute to the psychological understanding of mental disorders, particularly personality disorders. Parts III and IV trace the implications of phenomenology and epistemology for the improvement of an interdisciplinary pluralogue in psychiatry.
