Our aim in choosing the topics and contributors was to demonstrate common approaches to studies of fungal-plant and fungal-animal interactions, particularly at the biochemical and molecular Ievels. For example, the initial events of adh«sion of fungal spores to the exposed surface tissues of the host are essential for subsequent invasion of the plant or animal and establishment of pathogenesis. A point of consensus among investigators who have directed their attention to such events in plants, insects, and vertebrates isthat spore adhesion to the host cuticle or epithelium is more than a simple binding event. lt is a complex and potentially pivotal process in fungal-plant interactions which "may involve the secretion of ftuids that prepare the infection court for the development of morphological stages of the germling" and subsequent invasion of the host (Nicholson and Epstein, Chapter 1). The attachment of the fungal propagule to the arthropod cuticle is also "mediated by the chemical components present on the outer layer of the spore wall and the epicuticle . . . . Initial attachment may be reinforced further by either the active secretion of adhesive materials or the modification of spore wall materiallocated at the [fungal spore arthropod] cuticle interface (Boucias and Pendland, Chapter 5).

Book excerpt: As a result of a recent spread of a new and highly virulent race of Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici called Ug99, stem rust is becoming a serious threat to wheat production in Ethiopia and other east African countries. Therefore, there is an urgent need to analyse the virulence spectrum of Pgt populations in Ethiopia. Wheat stem rust samples were collected in 2006 and 2007 in Arsi, Bale, Shewa and the Northwest regions of Ethiopia to determine the virulence diversity and race distribution in P. graminis f. sp. tritici populations. Stem rust incidence was high in Arsi, Bale and East Shewa. In Northwest Ethiopia, and North and West Shewa, stem rust was prevalent at low levels. A total of 152 isolates was analyzed and 22 races were identified. Races TTKSR (Ug99), TTHSR and RRTTR were predominant with frequencies of 26.6, 17.7 and 11.1%, respectively. These races were also detected in all regions. It turned out that the highly virulent race designated as Ug99 was present throughout the country and dominated in all regions except Northwest Ethiopia. A variant of Ug99, which is virulent against Sr24 was not detected in this study. Four stem rust resistance genes (Sr13, Sr30, Sr36 and SrTmp) were found to confer resistance to most of the races prevalent in Ethiopia. With the exception of Sr30, which is not effective to Ug99, the other three genes can be used in breeding for resistance to stem rust in Ethiopia.

Today there is an increasing recognition on the part of the scientific agri cultural community that only through a deeper and more fundamental under standing of all the interacting components of the agricultural biota can we expect to improve our capabilities of feeding an expanding world population. It is in this context that physiological plant pathology has assumed new significance within the broader field of plant pathology. No longer are studies on the biochemistry and physiology of pathogens and pathogenesis merely isolated academic exercises; rather, a substantial coherent body of knowledge is accumulating upon which our understanding of the process of disease developmen t and host resistance is being founded. It is from these foundations of knowledge that ultimately new insights into the control of plant diseases may be expected to grow. It seems appropriate, therefore, that at regular intervals those involved in the various subspecialities encompassing the broadest aspects of physiological plant pathology reassess the contributions within the particular specialities in the light of new knowledge and technologies for the purpose of articulating new and productive directions for the future.

Watson of the University of Sydney, and he developed the first outline. I was then invited by Dr. Watson to share in its writing. Unfortunately, shortly there after, recurring heart problems forced him to curtail his activities and with draw from the project. He died before the book could be completed. Dr. Watson's intention was to produce a very practical book that would provide wheat breeders with all of the information necessary to breed success fully for resistance to the three wheat rusts: leaf rust, stem rust, and yellow rust. It was intended to be very specific in describing procedures to be used and at the same time provide all of the necessary theoretical background. I hope that I have been successful in meeting these objectives. The book assumes that the reader has some knowledge of plant pathology, genetics, and plant breeding. Extensive use has been made of the literature, but it was not possible to cite all of the papers on a given topic. In making a choice, an attempt was made to choose key papers or more recent papers that provided references to the earlier literature.
