Book A New One detector Analysis Method for Rapid High Precision Plutonium Isotopic Measurements

Download or read book A New One detector Analysis Method for Rapid High Precision Plutonium Isotopic Measurements written by and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new method has been developed that achieves plutonium isotopic analysis precisions of better than 2% in counting times of only a few minutes, using only the 59- to 208-keV energy region of a spectrum. This breakthrough was achieved by developing a unique but highly accurate method for delineating the overall ''intrinsic'' efficiency curve, including the plutonium K-shell absorption discontinuity at 121 keV. Consequently, the measured 129- and 148-keV peak intensities can now be used to reliably determine the relative abundances of 239Pu and 241Pu. The intense 94- to 104-keV region is also analyzed, providing accurate data for the other isotopes of interest. 5 refs., 3 figs., 2 tabs.

Book MGA2 Multiple Group Analysis

Download or read book MGA2 Multiple Group Analysis written by and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The MGA (Multiple Group Analysis) code which we developed several years ago required two detectors when analyzing high SU Pu content samples. The isotopic information, which was obtained from the 300-keV regions, can now be obtained equally well from the low-energy region (50 to 208 keV). This breakthrough was achieved by developing a unique and highly accurate method for delineating the overall ''intrinsic'' efficiency curve, including the plutonium K-shell absorption edge discontinuity. Consequently, the intense 129- and 148-keV peak intensities can now be used reliably in place of the peaks in the 300-keV regions to determine the relative abundances of STZPu and SU Pu. The 203/208- and 148/152-keV pairs, and all of the intense 94- to 104-keV peaks, are included in the analysis to provide accurate data for the other isotopes of interest.

Book High Precision Isotopic Analyses of Uranium and Plutonium by Total Sample Volatilization and Signal Integration

Download or read book High Precision Isotopic Analyses of Uranium and Plutonium by Total Sample Volatilization and Signal Integration written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Techniques have been developed which permit rapid, high-precision analyses of uranium and plutonium by multiple-filament thermal ionization mass spectrometry utilizing a commercial multicollector instrument. The salient feature of the method is volatilization of the entire sample while simultaneously integrating the signal from each isotope, thus virtually eliminating the effects of isotope fractionation in the evaporation process. The method permits the analysis of samples much smaller than required for conventional techniques using Faraday collectors and is expected to have application in the analysis of many elements in addition to uranium and plutonium. Run-to-run reproducibilities of

Book Improved Isotopic Measurement of Plutonium by Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry

Download or read book Improved Isotopic Measurement of Plutonium by Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) is accepted widely as the benchmark method for precise and accurate isotopic determination of plutonium. TIMS is one of the few analytical methods capable of determining Pu in bioassay samples at the level required for detecting a 50 yr committed dose of 100 mRem resulting from an inhalation exposure to highly insoluble forms of Pu. Typically, Pu is measured in bioassay samples by radiochemical separation, electrodeposition onto a planchet, and radiometric determination by alpha spectrometry. If, based on the alpha spectrometry results, a sample is deemed to need a more sensitive analysis (i.e. suspected uptake, borderline alpha spectrometry positive for Pu uptake, etc.), then the sample is prepared for analysis by TIMS. Part of the development process for establishing a program to determine Pu in bioassay samples by TIMS at the Savannah River Site involved a careful evaluation of the Pu blank value in the reagents used for sample preparation and in urine blanks. This exercise allowed for the evaluation of the newly developed radiochemical separation procedure, the resin bead loading procedure, and the detection limits of the thermal ionization mass spectrometer.

Book Rapid Nondestructive Plutonium Isotopic Analysis

Download or read book Rapid Nondestructive Plutonium Isotopic Analysis written by and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods for plutonium isotopic measurements have been evaluated for nuclear safeguards inventory verification. A mobile, real-time, nondestructive assay, gamma-ray spectrometric measurement system has been assembled, moved and operated at several nuclear storage facilities to perform rapid, real-time plutonium isotopic measurements on Pu metal, Pu nitrate and Pu oxide.

Book Rapid Fusion Method for Determination of Plutonium Isotopes in Large Rice Samples

Download or read book Rapid Fusion Method for Determination of Plutonium Isotopes in Large Rice Samples written by and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new rapid fusion method for the determination of plutonium in large rice samples has been developed at the Savannah River National Laboratory (Aiken, SC, USA) that can be used to determine very low levels of plutonium isotopes in rice. The recent accident at Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant in March, 2011 reinforces the need to have rapid, reliable radiochemical analyses for radionuclides in environmental and food samples. Public concern regarding foods, particularly foods such as rice in Japan, highlights the need for analytical techniques that will allow very large sample aliquots of rice to be used for analysis so that very low levels of plutonium isotopes may be detected. The new method to determine plutonium isotopes in large rice samples utilizes a furnace ashing step, a rapid sodium hydroxide fusion method, a lanthanum fluoride matrix removal step, and a column separation process with TEVA Resin cartridges. The method can be applied to rice sample aliquots as large as 5 kg. Plutonium isotopes can be determined using alpha spectrometry or inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The method showed high chemical recoveries and effective removal of interferences. The rapid fusion technique is a rugged sample digestion method that ensures that any refractory plutonium particles are effectively digested. The MDA for a 5 kg rice sample using alpha spectrometry is 7E-5 mBq g−1. The method can easily be adapted for use by ICP-MS to allow detection of plutonium isotopic ratios.

Book High resolution Gamma ray Isotopic Measurements of Uranium Plutonium Samples at IPPE in Support of Physical Inventory Taking Activities

Download or read book High resolution Gamma ray Isotopic Measurements of Uranium Plutonium Samples at IPPE in Support of Physical Inventory Taking Activities written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurement of various U and Pu samples by gamma-ray spectrometry were performed at the Institute of Physics and Power Engineering to support physical-inventory-taking activities under the Joint US-Russian MPC and A Program. The resulting data was analyzed by several different methods which included Canberra's MGA9.63 (Pu and MOX analysis) and MGAU (U analysis), EG and G Ortec's MGA++ (Pu and MOX analysis) and U235 (U analysis), and FRAM v2.2 (U and Pu analysis) provided by Los Alamos. The results indicate that all of these codes are capable of performing the isotopic analysis adequately. However, some additional modifications may be required to permit better measurement of some of the more unusual components in the Institute of Physics and Power Engineering (IPPE) inventory to meet the demands of inventory-taking activities.
