Book excerpt: In this study, a new model for performance evaluation using Data Envelopment Ana lysis (DEA) approach is proposed as an alternative and effective tool to measure the performance of employees. The new model was applied to thirty-two critical care nurses at one of the most recognized hospitals in Lebanon, using the BCC mo del that was developed by Banker, Charnes and Cooper and the CCR model, introduc ed by Charnes, Cooper and Rhodes. The performance criteria that are currently us ed at the hospital were divided into inputs and outputs. Input variables covered mainly the qualities, skills and behavior at work, whereas the outputs included the quantity and quality of work achieved. Contrary to the traditional evaluati on methods, DEA aims to measure the performance efficiency of employees relative to the "best performer" and does not refer to the average performance expected. After comparing the performance scores of the new model with the current perfor mance evaluation scores of the hospital, results show that DEA is an efficient t ool to measure the performance efficiency of employees. It provides a fair evalu ation with more motivation to the staff, and an effective projection for employe e performance improvement that will definitely have a positive impact on the pro ductivity and the overall performance of the hospital.
