Book A New Methodology to Integrate Parameters in Lumped Models

Download or read book A New Methodology to Integrate Parameters in Lumped Models written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work explores a new approach to estimate lumped parameters, taking into account their spatial distribution over the catchment. The objective is to improve the accuracy of lumped rainfall-runoff models applied to small watersheds. The new method uses a distance weighting function (WF) to map the weight of each cell along a flow path from the headwaters to the outlet of the catchment. Cell weights are assumed to diminish with increasing distance from the receiving water body. The proposed method is demonstrated with a non-dimensional Gaussian WF and then compared against two alternate approaches: (i) a simple area-weighted (AW) lumping method and (ii) a more complex physically-based distributed rainfall runoff model (KINEROS2). Parameters investigated are Manning's roughness coefficient (n) and saturated hydraulic conductivity (K sat). Model performance is compared in a series of runoff tests using hypothetical storms on an ideal basin and actual storms a real watershed in Ohio. Test results from the ideal basin indicate that the proposed WF method for estimating K sat leads to improved runoff predictions compared to the conventional AW approach. In the case of Manning's n, however, there is no difference in runoff prediction between the WF and AW methods. Test results from the real watershed indicate that the proposed WF approach provided a slight improvement in simulating runoff.

Book Calibration of Watershed Models

Download or read book Calibration of Watershed Models written by Qingyun Duan and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2003-01-10 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Water Science and Application Series, Volume 6. During the past four decades, computer-based mathematical models of watershed hydrology have been widely used for a variety of applications including hydrologic forecasting, hydrologic design, and water resources management. These models are based on general mathematical descriptions of the watershed processes that transform natural forcing (e.g., rainfall over the landscape) into response (e.g., runoff in the rivers). The user of a watershed hydrology model must specify the model parameters before the model is able to properly simulate the watershed behavior.

To buy all four titles including Volume 3 and save £100, visit: http://iwapublishing.com/books/9781780400013/water-framework-directive-series-set Modelling Aspects of Water Framework Directive Implementation: Volume 1 is a concrete outcome from the Harmoni-CA concerted action as part of a 4-volume series of Guidance Reports that guide water professionals through the implementation process of the Water Framework Directive, with a focus on the use of ICT-tools (and in particular modelling). They are complementary to the Guidance Documents produced by the EU Directorate General for Environment. Water resources planning and management and the development of appropriate policies require methodologies and tools that are able to support systematic, integrative and multidisciplinary assessments at various scales. It also requires the quantification of various uncertainties in both data and models, and the incorporation of stakeholders participation and institutional mechanisms into the various tools and risk assessment methodologies, to help decision makers understand and evaluate alternative measures and decisions. The other three volumes in the Water Framework Directive Series are: Water Framework Directive: Model supported Implementation - A Water Manager’s Guide edited by Fred Hattermann and Zbigniew W Kundzewicz Integrated Assessment for WFD implementation: Data, economic and human dimension - Volume 2, edited by Peter A. Vanrolleghem Decision support for WFD implementation - Volume 3, edited by Peter A. Vanrolleghem. Book Integration of Process Design and Control

Download or read book Integration of Process Design and Control written by E. Zafiriou and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-23 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The existence of interactions between the design of a process and that of its control system have been known to industrial practitioners for a long time. In the past decade academic research has produced methodologies and tools that begin to address the issue of designing processes that are flexible, can be controlled reliably, and are inherently safe. This publication unites the work of academics and practitioners with interests in the integration of process design and control, in order to examine the state of the art in methodologies and applications. The scope covers the design of chemical plants at different stages of detail. It also examines control issues from the plantwide level, where, for example, recycles between units can be important, to the specific unit level, where the availability or selection of measurements might be the most important factor.
