Book excerpt: The Book of Filial Duty - Confucius - Part of the Wisdom of the East series. This is a translation of the Hsio Ching, or the Book of Filial Duty. It was written about 400 BCE, about a century following the death of Confucius, and is attributed to a conversation between Confucius and his disciple Zengzi. Confucius was a Chinese philosopher and politician of the Spring and Autumn period who is traditionally considered the paragon of Chinese sages. Confucius's teachings and philosophy underpin East Asian culture and society, remaining influential across China and East Asia to this day. Confucius considered himself a transmitter for the values of earlier periods which he claimed had been abandoned in his time. His philosophical teachings, called Confucianism, emphasized personal and governmental morality, correctness of social relationships, justice, kindness, and sincerity. His followers competed with many other schools during the Hundred Schools of Thought era, only to be suppressed in favor of the Legalists during the Qin dynasty. Following the victory of Han over Chu after the collapse of Qin, Confucius's thoughts received official sanction in the new government. During the Tang and Song dynasties, Confucianism developed into a system known in the West as Neo-Confucianism, and later as New Confucianism. Confucianism was part of the Chinese social fabric and way of life; to Confucians, everyday life was the arena of religion.

Book excerpt: The Xiao Jing or Classic of Filial Piety is a Confucian classic treatise giving advice on filial piety. It teaches how one should behave towards a senior such as parents, elder brother or ruler. The text consists of a dialogue between Confucius and his disciple Zeng Zi, and whose students probably compiled the treatise around 400 BC. It has become associated with the Confucian school of philosophy which became the ideology of imperial China and its neighbours such as Korea, Vietnam and Japan. It is unique in being probably the world's first text devoted to filial piety. The family unit has long been regarded as the foundation of society in China and filial piety is seen as being especially important to social order and national stability. To make the text relevant to readers of today, this book includes representative stories from not only China, the traditional bastion of filial piety, but also other cultures around the world. In this way, readers will appreciate filial behaviour as a universal value.

Book excerpt: The I Ching, usually translated as Book of Changes, is an ancient Chinese divination text and among the oldest of the Chinese classics. Originally a divination manual in the Western Zhou period (1000–750 BC), over the course of the Warring States period and early imperial period (500–200 BC) it was transformed into a cosmological text with a series of philosophical commentaries known as the "Ten Wings". The I Ching is used in a type of divination called cleromancy, which uses apparently random numbers. Six numbers between 6 and 9 are turned into a hexagram, which can then be looked up in the text, in which hexagrams are arranged in an order known as the King Wen sequence. The interpretation of the readings found in the I Ching is a matter which has been endlessly discussed and debated over in the centuries following its compilation, and many commentators have used the book symbolically, often to provide guidance for moral decision making as informed by Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism.

Book Filial Piety in Chinese Thought and History

Download or read book Filial Piety in Chinese Thought and History written by Alan Chan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-08-02 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phenomenon of filial piety is fundamental to our understanding of Chinese culture, and this excellent collection of essays explores its role in various areas of life throughout history. Often regarded as the key to preserving Chinese tradition and identity, its potentially vast impact on government and the development of Chinese culture makes it extremely relevant, and although invariably virtuous in its promotion of social cohesion, its ideas are often controversial. A broad range of topics are discussed chronologically including Confucianism, Buddhism and Daoism, making it essential reading for those studying Chinese culture, religion and philosophy. This is a multi-disciplinary survey that combines historical studies with philosophical analysis from an international team of respected contributors.
