This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New History of Rome, From the Earliest Times to the Fall of the Western Empire It may perhaps seem unnecessary to add another History of Rome to those now in use; but, so far as the author is aware, none has appeared since the writings of the greatest living historian of Rome have opened new and important fields of thought to the student. Much light has also been thrown by modern comparative philology on the origin and primitive history of the Latin race. The present work is based in the main upon the 'Römische Geschichte' of Theodor Mommsen, and its chief aim is to bring the latest results of German research and criticism within the reach of English schools. The writer was not aware, until the work had made some progress, that a translation in extenso of Professor Mommsen's History, by Professor Dickson of Glasgow University, was being issued, which has since been completed; but it is evident that the two works are addressed to different classes of readers. This History is intended for the use of higher forms in schools, and candidates for appointments in the Civil Service; but it is hoped that it may not prove devoid of interest to the general reader. The writer has endeavoured not merely to relate facts, but to impart life and suggestiveness to the story of the great Republic. To excite interest and sympathy, and to suggest thought, may not be the least important of the teacher's functions. Download or read book Lectures on the History of Rome Vol 1 of 3 written by Barthold Georg Niebuhr and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the History of Rome, Vol. 1 of 3: From the Earliest Times to the Fall of the Western Empire M. Marcus Niebuhr, who afterwards undertook the revision of the proof-sheets, also suggested several improvements. From these statements, the reader will see that the German editor had greater advantages than could have fallen to the lot of any one undertaking the task in this country; for he not only had notes from two distinct courses of Lectures on the same sub jcet, one of which was supplementary to the other, but he was assisted by those most deeply interested in the work. As, moreover, the three volumes of N iebuhr's immortal History treat of the same period as that contained in these Lectures, the former always served as a corrective, wherever the manu scripts of the latter were obscure or imperfect. Book excerpt: World's Great Classics by George Rawlinson is an extensive volume on the history of the world. It covers the period of ancient history right up to the fall of the western empire. This particular text is the first part of a set of 61 books that provide one of the most in-depth analyses of the world's history and literature. It is one of the few books available that provide detailed information on entire ancient civilizations and cultures in one place. Rawlinson breaks up the historical periods in question into five different sections for easy access and quick reference. It starts with the history of ancient Asiatic and African states and moves on to the establishment of the Persian monarchy. The latter half of this work is devoted to the evolution of Greek, Macedonian and Roman empires. Rawlinson summarizes the history of Rome in World's Great Classics in the most fascinating manner with a well thought out structure dividing it into various periods for a clearer understanding of the reader. World's Great Classics is replete with an impressive set footnotes within the chapters. It is these snippets of information which fill in glaring gaps and provide context and scope for further research in this work. Written in sanguine language with a distinctive style, Rawlinson provides an authoritative undertone to this masterpiece. Whether for general readers wanting an excellent summary of ancient world history or students and scholars of the subject, World's Great Classics should be an integral part of any collection. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Roman Empire, From the Accession of Augustus to the End of the Empire of the West: Being a Continuation of the History of Rome The present volume is peculiarly valuable on many accounts. It embraces a period, the history of which exists in no accessible form, while its facts are Of a most interest ing and important nature, as connected with the rise, and Spread, and influence, and corruptions of the Christian church. It forms a connecting link between the times and nations properly called. Ancient, and those properly called modern, inasmuch as it displays the first inroads Of the peoples and races destined gradually to mould the latter, upon the strength, and power, and sway of the former, and their final rise upon their ruins. Book excerpt: How did a single village community in the Italian peninsula eventually become one of the most powerful imperial powers the world has ever known? In A History of Rome from Earliest Times to the End of the Western Empire, Bryan Harris explores this question as they guide students through a comprehensive sweep of Roman history, ranging from the prehistoric settlements to the fall of the empire in 476. Addressing issues that still confront modern states worldwide including warfare, empire building, consensus forging, and political fragmentation the authors also provide glimpses into everyday Roman life and perspective, demonstrating how Rome's growth as a state is inseparable from its social and cultural development.. It also includes more than 30 ancient maps, revised and improved under the supervision of author Bryan Harris, and textual extracts that provide fascinating cultural observations made by ancient Romans themselves.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Ancient History From the Earliest Times to the Fall of the Roman Empire in the West, A D. 476 Histories, projected by thc'syndics of the Cambridge University Press. Of the scope' and aim of the book I have written in the Introduction; but I have a few further remarks to make, which seem to belong rather to a preface. The vastness of the period which my work covers naturally precludes any claim to high originality on my part; compelled, as I have been, to rely largely on the labours of others, I have endeavoured to use my best judgment in the choice of authorities and my utmost care and conscientiousness in the use of them. Wherever my own reading has made it possible, I have exercised an independent judgment; and, on some sections, where my own knowledge fell short, I have enjoyed the invaluable assistance of friends. That I have avoided all errors and partial statements is more than I dare hope: for all such sins of omission and commission I can. Only ask for a merciful judgment.
