Book Zinc Batteries

Download or read book Zinc Batteries written by Rajender Boddula and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-04-10 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Battery technology is constantly changing, and the concepts and applications of these changes are rapidly becoming increasingly more important as more and more industries and individuals continue to make “greener” choices in their energy sources. As global dependence on fossil fuels slowly wanes, there is a heavier and heavier importance placed on cleaner power sources and methods for storing and transporting that power. Battery technology is a huge part of this global energy revolution. Zinc batteries are an advantageous choice over lithium-based batteries, which have dominated the market for years in multiple areas, most specifically in electric vehicles and other battery-powered devices. Zinc is the fourth most abundant metal in the world, which is influential in its lower cost, making it a very attractive material for use in batteries. Zinc-based batteries have been around since the 1930s, but only now are they taking center stage in the energy, automotive, and other industries. Zinc Batteries: Basics, Developments, and Applicationsis intended as a discussion of the different zinc batteries for energy storage applications. It also provides an in-depth description of various energy storage materials for Zinc (Zn) batteries. This book is an invaluable reference guide for electrochemists, chemical engineers, students, faculty, and R&D professionals in energy storage science, material science, and renewable energy.

Book New Promising Electrochemical Systems for Rechargeable Batteries

Download or read book New Promising Electrochemical Systems for Rechargeable Batteries written by V. Barsukov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-09 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The storage of electroenergy is an essential feature of modem energy technologies. Unfortunately, no economical and technically feasible method for the solution of this severe problem is presently available. But electrochemistry is a favourite candidate from an engineering point of view. It promises the highest energy densities of all possible alternatives. If this is true, there will be a proportionality between the amount of electricity to be stored and the possible voltage, together with the mass of materials which make this storage possible. Insofar it is a matter of material science to develop adequate systems. Electricity is by far the most important secondary energy source. The present production rate, mainly in the thermal electric power stations, is in the order of 1.3 TW. Rechargeable batteries (RB) are of widespread use in practice for electroenergy storage and supply. The total capacity of primary and rechargeable batteries being exploited is the same as that of the world electric power stations. However, the important goal in the light of modem energy technology, namely the economical storage of large amounts of electricity for electric vehicles, electric route transport, load levelling, solar energy utilization, civil video & audio devices, earth and spatial communications, etc. will not be met by the presently available systems. Unless some of the new emerging electrochemical systems are established up to date, RB's based on aqueous acidic or alkali accumulators are mainly produced today.

Book Life cycle Optimization and Flow Control in a Nickel zinc Flow Assisted Battery

Download or read book Life cycle Optimization and Flow Control in a Nickel zinc Flow Assisted Battery written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nickel - Zinc flow - assisted rechargeable batteries are currently being explored as a potential new generation of large - scale, low - cost energy storage devices. The viability of a commercial nickel - zinc battery has been hindered by the well - known phenomena of dendrite formation and zinc morphology variation over time. Applying electrolyte flow to traditional nickel - zinc battery systems has demonstrated significant li fe cycle performance improvements by reducing both dendrite formation and morphological variation. It has also been demonstrated that periodic low - current reconditioning discharge further improves cycle life. This thesis examines the effect of eliminatin g electrolyte flow during discharge of nickel - zin c flow assisted batteries, which would allow a much broader range of applications for these novel batteries, particularly transportation - based applications such as electric vehicle applications. Experiments were further designed to determine the optimal periodicity for low - current reconditioning discharge, examining the effects of reconditioning after 7, 12, 20 and 30 charge - discharge cycles. The results of these experiments demonstrate that electrolyte flo w during discharge does provide performance benefits, but it is possible to operate a nickel - zinc flow assisted battery without flow during discharge, when low - charge reconditioning is applied every 7 cycles. It was further found that when electrolyte is flowing continuously, nickel - zinc flow - assisted batteries can operate at high efficiency and minimal performance degradation with periodic reconditioning after 30 cycles

Book excerpt: New rechargeable batteries beyond lithium-ion have attracted increasing interest due to their potential in commercializing various applications, including grid storage, electric vehicle (EV), etc. These new batteries hinge upon the respective storage/conversion mechanisms suitable for the particular application purposes. For instance, the stationary energy storage applications necessitate batteries to possess high cycling stability and, in some cases, high power densities, while high volumetric and gravimetric energy densities are critical for EV applications. Most importantly, all need to be cost competitive. Rechargeable zinc/manganese dioxide (Zn/MnO2) batteries are very promising for the stationary energy storage owing to their low cost, environmentally benign constituents, excellent safety, and relatively high energy density. Their usage, however, is largely hampered by the fast capacity fading. The complexity of the reactions has resulted in long-standing ambiguities of the capacity fading of Zn/MnO2 system. In this thesis, we find that both H+/Zn2+ intercalation and conversion reactions occur at different voltages in Zn/MnO2 and that the rapid capacity fading can clearly be ascribed to the rate-limiting and irreversible conversion reactions at a lower voltage. By limiting the irreversible conversion reactions, we successfully demonstrate ultrahigh power and long life that are superior to most of the reported zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) or even some lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). As for the application of batteries in the EV market, lithium/sulfur (Li/S) batteries hold great promise as the next-generation energy battery. Their practical application, however, is hindered by the rapid capacity fading associated with the dissolution of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) into the organic electrolytes. By anchoring thiol (-SH) functional groups to the nonpolar surface of a mesoporous carbon host, we successfully impede these losses. This new strategy increases the surface polarity of conductive carbons and traps LiPSs inside cathodes. By utilizing various spectroscopic methods, we investigate the mechanisms of LiPS trapping, which originate from the electrostatic and covalent interactions of the thiol functional groups with Li+ from the electrolyte and with S from the LiPS chains. The fundamental insight on the thiol functionality suggests a further rational design of multifunctional interfaces to achieve better Li/S performance.

Book Nickel Zinc Battery for Aircraft and Missile Applications

Download or read book Nickel Zinc Battery for Aircraft and Missile Applications written by Robert A. Brown and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For aircraft applications, a nickel-zinc battery has been developed which exhibits an improvement in low temperature/high rate performance as compared to the standard nickel-cadmium aircraft battery (MS-24497-5). The nickel-zinc battery is the same size and weight as the nickel-cadmium battery, but is rated at 45 AH capacity vs. 22 AH for the nickel-cadmium. Cycle life of 200 cycles (20 amperes for 1 hour) have been demonstrated in a configuration capable of delivering 1000 ampere discharge at -20 F. Nickel-zinc batteries were also manufactured for remotely piloted vehicle (RPV) applications to compare to existing lead-acid and silver-zinc batteries. These vehicles require a limited number of cycles at a high energy density and are a logical application of the nickel-zinc system. For missile applications, a remotely activated nickel-zinc battery has been developed to compare to the standard remotely activated silver-zinc battery. Reductions in the amount of separator needed for wet stand capability allow the nickel-zinc battery to exhibit higher capacity than the silver-zinc battery at room temperature discharge. (Author).
