Si poteva pure, oltreby the lake of Agnano, and the Solfatara, following, in the latter case, narrow bye-paths. Weshall take this last way on our return, taking.it present the new road of Posilipo, that we may enjoy it in its natural direction. Book Ischia in the gulf of Naples

Download or read book Ischia in the gulf of Naples written by Raffaele Castagna and published by Youcanprint. This book was released on 2015-05-18 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ischia is the largest island in the Bay of Naples. The Castle, built by Alphonso V of Aragon in the fifteenth century, is distant 16 miles from the Punta di Posillipo, and 20 miles from the Mole of Naples; it is famous in Italian annals for its long association with the noble poetess Vittoria Colonna, Marchioness of Pescara. Mount Epomeo, the Epopos of the Greeks, the Epopeus of the Latin poets, rises near the centre of the island. The ancient fable made Ischia the bed of Typhoeus. Ischia, called Aenaria, Inarime, and Pithecusa by the ancients, was populated in earliest times by a colony composed partly of Erythraeans and partly of Chalcidicans: they fixed their home where now stands the village of Lacco Ameno, one of the most beautifully picturesque of the whole island. Strabo, Pliny, Statius and other authors mention the therapeutic virtues of the hot springs of Ischia. The number of foreigners, travellers and Neapolitan gentlemen attending Ischia is very considerable.

Book excerpt: A vibrant, diverse history of Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples in the age of Romanticism Vesuvius is best known for its disastrous eruption of 79CE. But only after 1738, in the age of Enlightenment, did the excavations of Herculaneum and Pompeii reveal its full extent. In an era of groundbreaking scientific endeavour and violent revolution, Vesuvius became a focal point of strong emotions and political aspirations, an object of geological enquiry, and a powerful symbol of the Romantic obsession with nature. John Brewer charts the changing seismic and social dynamics of the mountain, and the meanings attached by travellers to their sublime confrontation with nature. The pyrotechnics of revolution and global warfare made volcanic activity the perfect political metaphor, fuelling revolutionary enthusiasm and conservative trepidation. From Swiss mercenaries to English entrepreneurs, French geologists to local Neapolitan guides, German painters to Scottish doctors, Vesuvius bubbled and seethed not just with lava, but with people whose passions, interests, and aims were as disparate as their origins.

Book Naples Capri Ischia and Pompeii

Download or read book Naples Capri Ischia and Pompeii written by Enrico Massetti and published by Enrico Massetti Publishing. This book was released on 2018-07-25 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The city of Naples, located on the south-western shores of Italy, is the third largest city in the country, and one of the richest regarding history. But despite its incredible past that extends to its first foundations as far back as the 9th Century BC, it is often overlooked by tourists who rarely venture here from nearby Rome. But with so much to offer travelers, it’s about time Naples was given the attention it deserves. Panoramic Vista As landscapes and views go, the Bay of Naples is hard to beat. The curvature of the marina extends around the coastline until it meets the towering figure of Mount Vesuvius in the nearby National Park. The sea is beautifully clear, and it’s a well-tended, cared for place. The good looks of the city have lent themselves to the lyrics of songs written about it, with the Neapolitan Torna a Sorrento (Come Back to Sorrento), being one of the most popular. Museums and Churches of Naples Naples is a museum in itself, and within the city, boundaries lie many churches, museums and historical sites ready to captivate travelers. The Duomo (cathedral) of San Gennaro, the patron saint of Naples, is one of the most visually spectacular in the region, while the Cappella di Santa Restituta is one of the country’s oldest surviving churches. And for lovers of the Baroque-style architecture, a visit to the church San Giuseppe dei Ruffi is a fascinating visit. Pizza Naples is considered to be the birthplace of pizza, with its origins dating back to the 16th Century. The different sauces that top the pizza each have a different story. The Margherita is reported to have been created in 1889 for the then Queen of Italy, Margherita of Savoy. Back then it was just a topping of seasoned tomatoes, but that has since evolved to include white mozzarella cheese and green basil to replicate the colors of the Italian flag. This guide leads you in a visit to Naples and the islands of Capri, Ischia, and Procida. It also covers the ruins of Pompeii and the Royal Palace of Caserta. It includes color photos and descriptions of the attractions of all the localities touched, as well as info on Campania’s cuisine and recipes. It has plenty of practical advice on travel to reach the islands and how to move once you are there. It is ideal for use on your smartphone as it contains active links to the websites of many reviews for the best-recommended restaurants that are at the location described. P { margin-bottom: 0.08in; }
