Book excerpt: Focusing on the range of child welfare, health, juvenile justice, child development, recreation, and family support services currently provided to children in the United States, this report of the Committee on Child Development Research and Public Policy assesses and provides recommendations concerning research on children's services and service provision. The first section of the report provides a historical review of the development of and research on children's services. The second section presents three examples of how enlarging the frame of reference for studying children's services brings into question and shifts the terms of policy debate. Examples discussed are child care, services for youth (adolescent) development, and the costs and benefits of financing children's services. In the committee's view, the dozens of specialized perspectives now employed by researchers and service providers constitute an insufficient basis for the formation of a social policy. It is recommended that research on children's services, as well as the services themselves, adopt a holistic conceptualization of the child and investigate how children actually live and manage their lives. It is further recommended that present research and service provision be continued, but be redesigned, redirected, and reformed to provide greater affordable benefits to children. Moving from the most recent linguistic theories on pragmatics and considering together both Stein- and Buchepigramme, this study investigates the linguistic means that are employed in texts transmitted on different media (the stone and the book) to point to and describe their spatial and temporal context. The research is based on the collection of a new corpus of Hellenistic book and inscribed dedicatory epigrams, which were compared to pre-Hellenistic dedicatory epigrams in order to highlight the crucial changes that characterise the development of the epigrammatic genre in the Hellenistic era. By demonstrating that the evolution of the epigrammatic genre moved on the same track for book and stone epigrams, this work offers an important contribution to the ongoing debate on the history of the epigrammatic genre and aims to stimulate further reflection on a poetic genre, which, since its origins in the Greek world, has been successful both in ancient and modern literary traditions.

Book excerpt: The volume that you have before you is the result of a growing realization that fluctuations in nonequilibrium systems playa much more important role than was 1 first believed. It has become clear that in nonequilibrium systems noise plays an active, one might even say a creative, role in processes involving self-organization, pattern formation, and coherence, as well as in biological information processing, energy transduction, and functionality. Now is not the time for a comprehensive summary of these new ideas, and I am certainly not the person to attempt such a thing. Rather, this short introductory essay (and the book as a whole) is an attempt to describe where we are at present and how the viewpoint that has evolved in the last decade or so differs from those of past decades. Fluctuations arise either because of the coupling of a particular system to an ex ternal unknown or "unknowable" system or because the particular description we are using is only a coarse-grained description which on some level is an approxima tion. We describe the unpredictable and random deviations from our deterministic equations of motion as noise or fluctuations. A nonequilibrium system is one in which there is a net flow of energy. There are, as I see it, four basic levels of sophistication, or paradigms, con cerning fluctuations in nature. At the lowest level of sophistication, there is an implicit assumption that noise is negligible: the deterministic paradigm.
