Book A New England Boyhood and Other Bits of Autobiography Classic Reprint

Download or read book A New England Boyhood and Other Bits of Autobiography Classic Reprint written by Edward Everett Hale and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New England Boyhood and Other Bits of Autobiography It seems to me almost by accident that I have ever written the pages of autobiography which the reader will find in this volume. He will see that they have been gathered from many different sources; they have been written under various conditions for different classes of readers, and they make no pretence, therefore, at unity of method or literary style. But I do not like to leave the sketch of "Boyhood" which was published under the title of "A New England Boyhood," as if my life ended when I was seventeen years old. That sketch, as the reader will see, was written for the Atlantic Monthly, at request of its editor Mr. Scudder, to be, in its way, a companion for the admirable study called "A New England Girlhood," by my charming kinswoman Miss Lucy Larcom. It ends with the day when I took my first degree at Harvard College. Before and after it was written, I had furnished one and another account of experiences in my life, at the request of one or another editor, or other friends. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Boyhood IN the beginning, at least, Father wrote these sketches of his boyhood and early farm life as a matter of self-defense: I had made a determined attempt to write them and when I did this I was treading on what was to him more or less sacred ground, for as he once said in a letter to me, You will be homesick; I know just how I felt when I left home forty-three years ago. And I have been more or less homesick ever since. The love of the old hills and of Father and Mother is deep in the very foundations of my being. He had an intense love of his birthplace and cherished every memory of his boyhood and of his family and of the old farm high up on the side of Old Clump the mountain out of whose loins I sprang -so that when I tried to write of him he felt it was time he took the matter in hand. The following pages are the result. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Mad Music

Download or read book Mad Music written by Stephen Budiansky and published by ForeEdge. This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mad Music is the story of Charles Edward Ives (1874Ð1954), the innovative American composer who achieved international recognition, but only after he'd stopped making music. While many of his best works received little attention in his lifetime, Ives is now appreciated as perhaps the most important American composer of the twentieth century and father of the diverse lines of Aaron Copland and John Cage. Ives was also a famously wealthy crank who made millions in the insurance business and tried hard to establish a reputation as a crusty New Englander. To Stephen Budiansky, Ives's life story is a personification of America emerging as a world power: confident and successful, yet unsure of the role of art and culture in a modernizing nation. Though Ives steadfastly remained an outsider in many ways, his life and times inform us of subjects beyond music, including the mystic movement, progressive anticapitalism, and the initial hesitancy of turn-of-the-century-America modernist intellectuals. Deeply researched and elegantly written, this accessible biography tells a uniquely American story of a hidden genius, disparaged as a dilettante, who would shape the history of music in a profound way. Making use of newly published lettersÑand previously undiscovered archival sources bearing on the longstanding mystery of Ives's health and creative declineÑthis absorbing volume provides a definitive look at the life and times of a true American original.
