Download or read book Opening NATO s Door written by Ronald D. Asmus and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2004-08-11 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How and why did NATO, a Cold War military alliance created in 1949 to counter Stalin's USSR, become the cornerstone of new security order for post-Cold War Europe? Why, instead of retreating from Europe after communism's collapse, did the U.S. launch the greatest expansion of the American commitment to the old continent in decades? Written by a high-level insider, Opening NATO's Door provides a definitive account of the ideas, politics, and diplomacy that went into the historic decision to expand NATO to Central and Eastern Europe. Drawing on the still-classified archives of the U.S. Department of State, Ronald D. Asmus recounts how and why American policy makers, against formidable odds at home and abroad, expanded NATO as part of a broader strategy to overcome Europe's Cold War divide and to modernize the Alliance for a new era. Asmus was one of the earliest advocates and intellectual architects of NATO enlargement to Central and Eastern Europe after the collapse of communism in the early 1990s and subsequently served as a top aide to Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and Deputy Secretary Strobe Talbott, responsible for European security issues. He was involved in the key negotiations that led to NATO's decision to extend invitations to Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic, the signing of the NATO-Russia Founding Act, and finally, the U.S. Senate's ratification of enlargement. Asmus documents how the Clinton Administration sought to develop a rationale for a new NATO that would bind the U.S. and Europe together as closely in the post-Cold War era as they had been during the fight against communism. For the Clinton Administration, NATO enlargement became the centerpiece of a broader agenda to modernize the U.S.-European strategic partnership for the future. That strategy reflected an American commitment to the spread of democracy and Western values, the importance attached to modernizing Washington's key alliances for an increasingly globalized world, and the fact that the Clinton Administration looked to Europe as America's natural partner in addressing the challenges of the twenty-first century. As the Alliance weighs its the future following the September 11 terrorist attacks on the U.S. and prepares for a second round of enlargement, this book is required reading about the first post-Cold War effort to modernize NATO for a new era.

Download or read book Opening The Door written by Adrienne Crowder and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-24 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book available to comprehensively address the treatment of sexually abused males, Opening the Door: A Treatment Model for Therapy with Male Survivors of Sexual Abuse is based on current research and the carefully evolved techniques of 41 therapists who have developed expertise in working with sexually abused males. It discusses both the approaches that these therapists bring to their work and presents interventions they have successfully applied in treatment. Written in clear, concise language, Opening the Door features a four-phase treatment model and presents, in detail, the therapeutic tasks necessary for each phase. This model makes clear the significant parallels and distinctions between the processes of therapy and abuse. These processes are discussed throughout the text to ensure that therapy will be a healing rather than a harmful experience. The volume presents information about the frequency of male sexual victimization, the impact of this victimization on the individual, primary differences between male and female victimization, and the issues victims typically bring into therapy. The four-phase treatment model for male survivors and the therapeutic tasks of each stage is then addressed. This model serves as a framework for presenting specific therapeutic interventions. Chapters examine such areas as the essential processes that pertain to all therapeutic modalities (individual, group, etc.) when treating male survivors of sexual abuse; contracting with clients, assessment guidelines, and methods of evaluation; individual therapy with male survivors; a two-stage group treatment model for male survivors, which discusses contraindications for group treatment, screening criteria, general ground rules for the group, and effective interventions; critical issues in treating male survivors, including engagement strategies, therapeutic impasses, and client/therapist gender dynamics; and the therapeutic process as it applies to adolescent male survivors, with particular emphasis on how treatment must be carefully tailored to the developmental needs of this group. Included are guidelines for working with adolescents and several interventions that contributors have successfully used with this population. Since working extensively with abuse survivors can exact significant personal costs, the book provides important self-care strategies for therapists to incorporate into their work and lives and discusses seven ways in which to recognize and manage counter-transference. The volume also contains a highly comprehensive list of written, video, and training resources that will provide therapists with numerous avenues to expand their clinical practice and knowledge, as well as seven appendices that include the DES Questionnaire and the Dean Adolescent Inventory Scale. Opening the Door will be an invaluable resource for all mental health practitioners who help male victims of sexual abuse to transcend survivorship and learn to live healthy, productive, and vital lives.

Book A Door Set Open

  • ISBN : 1566994551

Download or read book A Door Set Open written by Peter L. Steinke and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2010-08-23 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We resist change less when we associate it with mission and fortify it with hope. So argues longtime congregational consultant Peter Steinke in his fourth book, A Door Set Open, as he explores the relationship between the challenges of change and our own responses to new ideas and experiences. Steinke builds on a seldom-explored principle posited by the late Rabbi Edwin Friedman: the 'hostility of the environment' is proportionate to the 'response of the organism.' The key, Steinke says, is not the number or strength of the stressors in the system--anxiety, poor conditions, deteriorating values--but the response of the individual or organization to 'what is there.' Drawing on Bowen system theory and a theology of hope, as well as his experience working with more than two hundred congregations, Steinke makes the case that the church has entered an era of great opportunity. Theologian and sociologist Ernst Troeltsch said the church had closed down the office of eschatology. Steinke reopens it and draws our attention to God's future, to a vision of hope for the people of God. The door is set open for exploration and new creation.

Book Neanderthal Opens the Door to the Universe

Download or read book Neanderthal Opens the Door to the Universe written by Preston Norton and published by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “funny and sweetly oddball” (Publishers Weekly, starred review) novel about an odd-couple friendship formed by a mission to make their high school to suck less, for readers “seeking doors to the universe" (Booklist, starred review) and a razor sharp, moving, and outrageously funny read. Cliff Hubbard is a huge loser. Literally. His nickname at Happy Valley High School is Neanderthal because he’s so enormous—6’6” and 250 pounds to be exact. He has nobody at school, and life in his trailer-park home has gone from bad to worse ever since his older brother’s suicide. And there’s no one Cliff hates more than the nauseatingly cool quarterback Aaron Zimmerman, who after a near-death experience claims God gave him a list of things to do to make Happy Valley High suck less. And God said there’s only one person who can help: Neanderthal. To his own surprise, Cliff says he’s in. As he and Aaron make their way through the List, which involves a vindictive English teacher, a mysterious computer hacker, a decidedly unchristian cult of Jesus Teens, the local drug dealers, and the meanest bully at HVHS, Cliff feels like he’s part of something for the first time since losing his brother. But fixing a broken school isn’t as simple as it seems, and just when Cliff thinks they’ve completed the List, he realizes their mission hits closer to home than he ever imagined.

Book Opening Heaven s Door

Download or read book Opening Heaven s Door written by Patricia Pearson and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-05-13 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book by a respected journalist on Nearing Death Awareness—similar to Near-Death Experience—this “fascinating” (Kirkus Reviews) exploration brings “humor, sympathy, and keen critical intelligence to a topic that is all too often off-limits” (Ptolemy Tompkins, collaborator with Eben Alexander on Proof of Heaven). People everywhere carry with them extraordinary, deeply comforting experiences that arrived at the moment when they most needed relief: when they lost a loved one. These experiences can include clear messages from beyond, profound and vividly beautiful visions, mysterious connections and spiritual awareness, foreknowledge of a loved one’s passing—all of which evade explanation by science and logic. Most people keep these transcendent experiences secret for fear they will be discounted by hyperrational scrutiny. Yet these very common occurrences have the power to console, comfort, and even transform our understanding of life and death. Prompted by her family’s surprising, profound experiences around the death of her father and her sister, reporter Patricia Pearson sets out on an open-minded inquiry, a rare journalistic investigation of Nearing Death Awareness, which Anne Rice praises as “substantive, eloquent, and worthwhile.” Opening Heaven’s Door offers deeply affecting stories of messages from the dying and the dead in a fascinating work of investigative journalism, pointing to new scientific explanations that give these luminous moments the importance felt by those who experience them. Pearson also delves into out-of-body and near-death experiences, examining stories and research to make sense of these related but distinct categories. Challenging current assumptions about what we know and what we are still unable to explain, Opening Heaven’s Door will forever alter your perceptions of the nature of life and death.
