Waylaid by his own conscience, Redhawk must use all that he's learned if he wants to save the elven prisoners from a morbid fate. However, being a strong mind mage just might have a few advantages… Venturing toward the human city of Sartae, where he's hoping to find what he needs to return home, Redhawk makes a few "uncommon" companions. As the small band of odd-fellows face the many challenges that lay ahead, Redhawk starts to realize that the good people of Attaireo just might be in need of some help themselves. Sometimes, the best course of action isn't always the one you were striving for.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No play in the modern theatre has so captured the imagination and heart of the American public as Tennessee Williams's The Glass Menagerie. Menagerie was Williams's first popular success and launched the brilliant, if somewhat controversial, career of our pre-eminent lyric playwright. Since its premiere in Chicago in 1944, with the legendary Laurette Taylor in the role of Amanda, the play has been the bravura piece for great actresses from Jessica Tandy to Joanne Woodward, and is studied and performed in classrooms and theatres around the world. The Glass Menagerie (in the reading text the author preferred) is now available only in its New Directions Paperbook edition. A new introduction by prominent Williams scholar Robert Bray, editor of The Tennessee Williams Annual Review, reappraises the play more than half a century after it won the New York Drama Critics Circle Award: "More than fifty years after telling his story of a family whose lives form a triangle of quiet desperation, Williams's mellifluous voice still resonates deeply and universally." This edition of The Glass Menagerie also includes Williams's essay on the impact of sudden fame on a struggling writer, "The Catastrophe of Success," as well as a short section of Williams's own "Production Notes." The cover features the classic line drawing by Alvin Lustig, originally done for the 1949 New Directions edition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this book is to establish schools that positively impact all aspects of the total development of students. Beginning with age four or five, most children spend the majority of their conscious hours at school. Many of the evils of our society are perpetrated by people with no vision or purpose, and no respect for other humans. Too many students leave school with no goals and employable skills. Many athletes, who were tutored or given grades to keep them eligible for sports and were discarded when the eligibility expired, ended up with or without a high school diploma or college degree and no skills. A few managed to get into professional sports, but competition, injuries, unenlightened mismanagement of funds, and early retirement left them with no skills. Young girls frequently became parents with no homemaking skills. These individuals sometimes harbor resentment for former schoolmates who are busily working toward the achievement of their goals and this resentment is frequently manifested by some action. The aim of this book is to develop schools where students are programmed for future success, beginning in kindergarten. To do this, schools districts must interact with businesses, colleges, corporations, and any other entities where students seek careers in order to establish objectives that guide students toward those careers. Schools should provide experiences where meaningful character traits are developed. The final expected result will be a new respect for education and a society where the majority of the citizens are goal driven and wish to make a meaningful contribution, and a very few people who just exist. Citizens of a society, who are busy working toward some desirable objectives, are less likely to have time for unlikely and illegal pursuits.

Book excerpt: A classic escape nightmare, Chasing Homer is sped on not only by Krasznahorkai’s signature velocity, but also by a unique musical score and intense illustrations In this thrilling chase narrative, a hunted being escapes certain death at breakneck speed—careening through Europe, heading blindly South. Faster and faster, escaping the assassins, our protagonist flies forward, blending into crowds, adjusting to terrains, hopping on and off ferries, always desperately trying to stay a step ahead of certain death: the past did not exist, only what was current existed—a prisoner of the instant, rushing into this instant, an instant that had no continuation … Krasznahorkai—celebrated for the exhilarating energy of his prose—outdoes himself in Chasing Homer. And this unique collaboration boasts beautiful full-color paintings by Max Neumann and—reaching out of the book proper—the wildly percussive music of Szilveszter Miklós scored for each chapter (to be accessed by the reader via QR codes).

Book An Apprenticeship or The Book of Pleasures

Download or read book An Apprenticeship or The Book of Pleasures written by Clarice Lispector and published by New Directions Publishing. This book was released on 2022-05-03 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in paperback, a romantic love story by the great Brazilian writer Lóri, a primary school teacher, is isolated and nervous, comfortable with children but unable to connect to adults. When she meets Ulisses, a professor of philosophy, an opportunity opens: a chance to escape the shipwreck of introspection and embrace the love, including the sexual love, of a man. Her attempt, as Sheila Heti writes in her afterword, is not only “to love and to be loved,” but also “to be worthy of life itself.” Published in 1968, An Apprenticeship is Clarice Lispector’s attempt to reinvent herself following the exhausting effort of her metaphysical masterpiece The Passion According to G. H. Here, in this unconventional love story, she explores the ways in which people try to bridge the gaps between them, and the result, unusual in her work, surprised many readers and became a bestseller. Some appreciated its accessibility; others denounced it as sexist or superficial. To both admirers and critics, the olympian Clarice gave a typically elliptical answer: “I humanized myself,” she said. “The book reflects that.”

Book Solid Freeform Fabrication A New Direction in Manufacturing

Download or read book Solid Freeform Fabrication A New Direction in Manufacturing written by J.J. Beaman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solid Freeform Fabrication is a set of manufacturing processes that are capable of producing complex freeform solid objects directly from a computer model of an object without part-specific tooling or knowledge. In essence, these methods are miniature manufacturing plants which come complete with material handling, information processing and materials processing. As such, these methods require technical knowledge from many disciplines; therefore, researchers, engineers, and students in Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, and Manufacturing Engineering and Materials and Computer Science will all find some interest in this subject. Particular subareas of concern include manufacturing methods, polymer chemistry, computational geometry, control, heat transfer, metallurgy, ceramics, optics, and fluid mechanics. History of technology specialists may also find Chapter 1 of interest. Although this book covers the spectrum of different processes, the emphasis is clearly on the area in which the authors have the most experience, thermal laser processing. In particular, the authors have all been developers and inventors of techniques for the Selective Laser Sintering process and laser gas phase techniques (Selective Area Laser Deposition). This is a research book on the subject of Solid Freeform Fabrication.

Book excerpt: Three subtly connected stories converge in this chimerical debut, showcasing a powerful new Brazilian voice Three subtly connected stories converge in this chimerical debut, each burrowing into a turning point in a person’s life: a young woman gives a melancholy account of her obsession with climbing Mount Everest; a Peruvian-Brazilian vanishes into the forest after staying in a musty, semi-abandoned inn in the haunted depths of the Brazilian countryside; a young playwright embarks on the production of a play about the city of Sevastopol and a Russian painter portraying Crimean War soldiers. Inspired by Tolstoy’s The Sevastopol Sketches, Emilio Fraia masterfully weaves together these stories of yearning and loss, obsession and madness, failure and the desire to persist, in a restrained manner reminiscent of Anton Chekhov, Roberto Bolano, and Rachel Cusk.

Book A New Direction for China s Defense Industry

Download or read book A New Direction for China s Defense Industry written by Evan S. Medeiros and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2005-12-19 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early 1980s, a prominent and consistent conclusion drawn from research on China's defense-industrial complex has been that China's defense-production capabilities are rife with weaknesses and limitations. This study argues for an alternative approach: From the vantage point of 2005, it is time to shift the focus of current research to the gradual improvements in and the future potential of China's defense-industrial complex. The study found that China's defense sectors are designing and producing a wide range of increasingly advanced weapons that, in the short term, are relevant to a possible conflict over Taiwan but also to China's long-term military presence in Asia. Part of a larger RAND Project AIR FORCE study on Chinese military modernization, this study examines the current and future capabilities of China's defense industry. The goals of this study are to 1.
